Trump Responds to Mexican Prez’s Promise to Not Pay for Border Wall: ‘He Has to Say That’

In his first TV interview since becoming president, Donald Trump continued to insist that Mexico will cover the costs of a border wall, no matter how Mexican officials feel about it.

ABC released a preview of Trump’s conversation with David Muir, who asked him about claims that construction on the wall will begin in months. Muir wanted to know if that means that the wall would be funded by American taxpayers.

Trump insisted that Mexico would completely reimburse America “in some form” for the construction, though Muir brought up how President Enrique Peña Nieto has said on multiple occasions that his country will never pay for the wall.

“He has to say that,” Trump said, shrugging off Peña Nieto’s promise. “I’m just telling you, there will be a payment, it will be in a form, perhaps a complicated form.”

Trump is expected to sign an executive order later today which will direct funding towards the wall, and initialize new policies on immigration.

The full interview will air tonight on ABC at 10 p.m. EST.
