The White House reactions to Donald Trump‘s election victory have ranged from President Obama‘s public expression of hope to, well, a more blunt assessment of how it felt from Valerie Jarrett today.
Jarrett spoke at Politico‘s Women Rule event today and had this to say about how the White House reacted to Trump’s surprise win:
“Obviously we were surprised by the outcome of the election. It kind of was like a, I’m not sure what the right analogy would be, but like a punch in the stomach, let’s say. Soul-crushing might be another description. “But that’s the democracy that we have: the people get to decide and the elections matter and we have to get about the business of doing our jobs.”
Jarrett appeared in a White House photo during Obama’s first post-election public remarks that went viral online:

Jarrett today also touted the successes of the Obama era and revealed that she encouraged Kellyanne Conway to take a job in the White House, something Conway may not necessarily end up doing.
