WATCH: Jeopardy! Host Alex Trebek Moderated PA Governor Debate and Got Booed Out of Building
This venerable game show icon was in way over his head moderating the Pennsylvania gubernatorial debate on Monday night.
Who is Alex Trebek?
The longtime Jeopardy! host was tasked with moderating the lone debate between Gov. Tom Wolf (D) and challenger Scott Wagner (R). And the reviews were not good. Critics charged Trebek with being way too involved in the proceeding — making it about himself rather than the candidates.
“He went out of his way in the beginning, saying he was not going to get in the way, then he got in the way,” said Charlie Gerow — CEO of Harrisburg, PA-based Quantum communications, according to the Reading Eagle.
At several points, the audience jeered Trebek for injecting his own opinions. And towards the end, he was loudly booed during a discussion of a proposed severance tax. Wolf argued for the tax on gas production. Wagner was opposed — arguing that the state already levies a tax on gas companies via an impact fee.
“You’re not taxing them that much because most of them are based in Texas or Oklahoma,” Trebek said.
That comment drew the boos from a restless audience.
“What did I tell you guys at the beginning?” Trebek said. “No booing or hissing! And now you’re directing it at me!”
