Florida Woman Caught Posing as an ICE Official and Scamming Both Sides In the Process

While Florida Man garners much of the attention, the female counterpart in the Sunshine State is no less a compelling figure. The psychosis that permeates the area is an equal opportunity, and Florida Woman can be just as entertaining. Take this case of the Coral Gables resident who found it worthwhile to pose as an official from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The Miami Herald covers the antics of Ana Caridad Linares, who developed a rather…curious manner of opposing our enforcement of immigration law. She figured she could fight the system from within on rules and technicalities. That she had no bearing on said system and possessed none of the licensed authority to exact her plan did not deter her efforts.
One of the trademark aspects of Florida Man – Florida Woman stories is not just the crackpot content but that often the stories have layers of surrealism. The case of Linares delivers on that count, as she posed as a Legal Administrative Specialist from the ICE division. Linares attempted to have the cases of some illegal detainees dismissed in her non-existent role.

It takes whatever the Hispanic version of chutzpah might be to go so far as to actually file documents in court when you know you have zero authority in both the agency and in the legal system. A judge caught on to the ruse rather quickly and informed the individual being tried that his representative was committing fraud.
The attempted scam was exposed largely because the position she claimed to hold is one of a clerical nature, not one with any legal influence. Effectively, she was attempting to file court motions while claiming to be holding the title of a secretary.
Then Linares took her brazen effort further when, despite being caught, she continued to attempt to have immigration cases dismissed – on three other occasions. All four of her attempts were flagged and tossed out, and as a result of her bold yet stunted attempts, she was charged with impersonating a federal officer.
The Florida Woman was not doing this strictly as a form of noble protest against our nation’s immigration policy; Linares was scamming the individuals while also trying to scam the immigration courts. She was charging her “clients” for asylum filings and representation, of which she possessed no ability to do so.
Linares pled guilty this month, and she faces her sentencing hearing scheduled for next week. Her attorney (a legitimate and verified legal representative) is angling for a light sentence as a result of accountability for her crime.
For those of us in this state, this Florida Woman story is the type not to elicit shocks, but generates heads nodding, in a knowing fashion. As the Herald explains in its report, “Everyday people impersonating federal agents is fairly common in South Florida.”
This is an opinion piece. The views expressed in this article are those of just the author.
