‘Bob Bad’: Reviled MAGA Rebel Bob Good to Face Primary Challenge After Betraying McCarthy and Trump
Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) is likely to soon have a primary challenger after earning the ire of his GOP colleagues as well as crossing former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and former President Donald Trump.
According to a new report from Politico, Good will have to beat ex-Navy SEAL and current Virginia State Senator John McGuire in order to hold onto the Republican nomination in Old Dominion’s fifth congressional district.
Good was among the eight Republicans to vote to eject McCarthy from the speakership last month, and endorsed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for president in May, making a number of enemies along the way.
“Bob Good took Trump’s endorsement, ran on his name, ran on his policies, and got elected. He also took all the fundraising that Kevin McCarthy worked hard to give him, happily took that money. Then he turns his back on everybody and stabs people in the back and the front,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) told Politico. “And is it a surprise he’s facing a primary challenger? Not at all.”
McCarthy jokingly professed to be “shocked” when he was told about the primary challenge to Good and didn’t rule out getting involved.
“I have to study all these [primary contests]. Prior to being the speaker, I couldn’t get engaged in races. But I’m a free agent now,” said McCarthy, who also noted that he put “a lot of money” into Good’s 2022 campaign.
The report noted that Good’s peers have taken to using a pithy, if less-than-unique nickname to refer to him:
Many of Good’s House GOP colleagues, while praising his intelligence, say he’s more inclined to tee off on fellow Republicans than try to find solutions to intra-party problems. Some of his colleagues on the right adore him for it, but others in the party have given him the nickname ‘Bob Bad.’
Good won his 2022 re-election bid by a little more than 15%.
