The Washington Post and investigative reporter Michael Kranish were mocked on X (formerly Twitter) Tuesday for publishing an article critical of Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley’s high school.
Under the headline “Haley’s nearly all-White high school lacked lessons of racism, some say,” Kranish reported that while “for most of her childhood, Nikki Haley attended public school in her rural hometown, where roughly half of her classmates were Black,” she attended a mostly-white private school beginning with her sophomore year of high school.
“At her new high school, where the daughter of Indian immigrants was one of the only non-White students, some classmates said in interviews that they weren’t adequately instructed about South Carolina’s history of divisive racial issues — from Jim Crow laws to Ku Klux Klan raids to lynchings,” wrote Kranish.
Eventually, the journalist attempted to tie the story back to its ostensible subject by proclaiming that “Haley has based her appeal partly on nostalgia for her upbringing” and “has long navigated treacherous waters in seeking to appeal to a largely White Republican Party base that views claims of racism with deep skepticism.”
Fox Business Digital senior editor Jay Caruso spoke for many when he asked of Kranish’s work “What does this have to do with anything?”

BASEDPolitics co-founder Brad Polumbo minced even fewer words, musing that “this shit is exhausting.”

“Do…do they know Nikki Haley isn’t white?” asked the Washington Free Beacon’s Drew Holden, who also wondered aloud if the Post thought Haley was setting the curriculum. “I almost…almost… can’t believe they’re doing this.”

Yours truly even weighed in, noting that it was a classic of a certain genre in the Fourth Estate.
This article has nothing to do with Nikki Haley. What a classic of the “[Republican’ Name…Something Bad Unrelated to Said Republican]” genre. https://t.co/d0Ye13jjxA

Haley, the daughter of Indian immigrants, removed the Confederate flag from the South Carolina’s Capitol grounds after a racially-motivated shooting targeting African-Americans in June 2015. Her Indian heritage has been mocked by political opponents on both the left and right.
