Fox News’s senior national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin called out Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for firing his defense minister, who has helped the country make recent gains against Russia in the form of drone attacks.
“Huge mistake by Zelenskyy in firing his very qualified defense minister who had turned the tide of the war with Russia by creatively using asymmetric warfare,” wrote Griffin on X, sharing a speech from the ousted minister, Mykhailo Fedorov.
In the clip, Fedorov says, “We need to fight for every single person. We have to win through asymmetry.”
Fedorov, who is only 35, was described as “tech-savvy” in reports, which noted he “pushed for innovation in the battlefield through the use of drones and turned the tables on Russia.” Ukraine has used drones to strike deep into Russia, attacking energy infrastructure key to Vladimir Putin’s economy and war effort.
Fedorov only served as defense minister for six months and his exit comes amid a government reshuffle. NPR reported, “Parliament has already approved Zelenskyy’s choice for prime minister, Serhii Koretskyi, former CEO of Naftogaz, the country’s largest oil and gas company. Lawmakers must also approve Fedorov’s replacement.” He reported noted that Fedorov had been offered lucrative tech jobs following his term as defense minister:
Speaking to reporters in Kyiv, Fedorov said he was proud of what his team had accomplished in just six months. He said he had received supportive messages from other defense ministers as well as the leaders of tech giants, including Alex Karp of Palantir, who offered him a job that he turned down.
“I don’t need to be Minister of Defense just to be Minister of Defense. I need this position so we can win this war,” told reporters.
