GOP Senate Candidate Accuses Trump of Selling His Endorsement to Rival: ‘The Snakes Are Within’
Jeff Gunter, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Iceland under former President Donald Trump, just lost his bid for a U.S. Senate seat in Nevada to Sam Brown. After Brown won a coveted endorsement from the ex-president, Gunter accused Trump — without evidence — of accepting a “big check” from his Republican primary rival.
Trump made his endorsement of Brown public on Sunday following his rally in Las Vegas in a Truth Social Post. After that, Gunter laid out what he believed happened in a series of posts on Twitter/X, including the claim that Trump had received some sort of payment in exchange for the endorsement of Brown. He first teased: “Would you like the hear the inside baseball of what went down yesterday? The Snakes are within.”
Then he posted the following explanation, referring to his opponent Sam Brown as “Scam”:
Here’s the gist of what happened:
-Scam is told by his handlers he’s getting endorsed at the rally
-some awesome & fearless MAGA warriors make it clear this would be a terrible idea. “DON’T DO IT.”
-DJT doesn’t endorse at rally.
-NRSC McConnell swamp freaks out
-On plane ride back big check comes in from the swamp (McConnell-aligned PAC?)
-Truth Social Post comes out late last night
Sadly, the suspicions many of us have had about “endorsements” are being confirmed.
When asked by The New York Times about proof of his claim, a representative for Gunter said, “Yes he can, stay tuned.” The Times stated that no timeline for the presentation of said evidence was provided.
In response, Mike Berg of the National Republican Senatorial Committee called Gunter “totally unglued and is making false, defamatory accusations against N.R.S.C. and President Trump’s team.”
From the Trump side, senior advisor Chris LaCivita said on Twitter/X that Gunter’s claim was “proof point” for the reason he didn’t earn Trump’s endorsement: “President Trump makes his own decisions and this is another example of him choosing wisely.”
Gunter placed second after Brown in Nevada’s primary election on Tuesday. He spoke to Dan Abrams (the owner of Mediaite) on NewsNation that night after making his allegations.
