Some reboots are great. The relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005 massively expanded the show’s audience around the world and television series like The Mandalorian brought the Star Wars universe to a new generation of fans.

Others are like when Hollywood inexplicably attempts to remake any Audrey Hepburn movie. Just. Don’t.

And then there’s George Freaking Santos.

The guy who lied so often that my attempt in January 2023 to chronicle those lies barely lasted a day before it was outdated was expelled from Congress in December after a damning Ethics Committee report and one of his fellow Republican congressmen accused Santos of defrauding him – and even his mother.

A special election in February for Santos’ replacement in NY-3 was won by Democrat Tom Suozzi, and Santos couldn’t resist the spotlight of Thursday’s State of the Union and showed up, insisting on taking advantage of the floor privileges afforded to former members of Congress — although he was not allowed to take up a prime seat.

Santos crashing the party wasn’t enough spotlight for him and he tweeted during President Joe Biden’s speech that he would be running for re-election, this time in a different district.

After taking a swipe at Biden as a “weak, frail president” whom he watched “deliver spin and lies to the American people,” Santos complained that he had “made several personal sacrifices in the name of serving the American people” and vowed he “will never back down because of my love for this country.”

“New York hasn’t had a real conservative represent them since I left office arbitrarily, thanks to RINO, empty suits like [Nick LaLota],” Santos continued, referring to the Republican congressman in NY-1.

In December 2022 shortly after they were both elected for the first time, LaLota was among the first GOP members to call the House Ethics Committee to investigate Santos’ many false claims, saying, “New Yorkers deserve the truth and House Republicans deserve an opportunity to govern without this distraction.”

Santos accused LaLota of being  “willing to risk the future of our majority and the future of this country for his own political gain,” so “[a]fter a lot of prayer and conversation with my friends and family, I have made a very important decision that will shake things up.”

Then came the announcement: “Tonight, I want to announce that I will be returning to the arena of politics and challenging Nick for the battle over #NY1. I look forward to debating him on the issues and on his weak record as a Republican. The fight for our majority is imperative for the survival of the country.”

“God bless you all, and we are off to the races!” Santos concluded.
