Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) slammed the Tuesday verdict that found Hunter Biden guilty on three gun-related charges.
“Hunter might deserve to be in jail for something, but purchasing a gun is not it,” wrote Massie on X, adding:
There are millions of marijuana users who own guns in this country, and none of them should be in jail for purchasing or possessing a firearm against current laws.
Elon Musk quickly chimed in and replied, “I agree. He (and others) should be in jail for impugning the integrity of the United States by taking bribes for political favors, but not for this pseudo-crime.”

Massie joined a chorus of voices on the right who were dismayed with Hunter Biden being found guilty in federal court on three separate charges. Those charges were making a false statement material to a firearm sale, making a false statement in a firearms transaction record, and being in possession of a firearm as a drug user. The convictions carry significant potential jail time, including a maximum sentence of ten years for the first and third charges and up to five years for the second charge.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who faced his own federal investigation related to sex trafficking allegations, was also irked by the verdict and wrote on X, “The Hunter Biden gun conviction is kinda dumb tbh.”
Massie was pressed in other replies to his tweet on the exact drug Hunter Biden was using while buying a gun. “He wasn’t using marijuana. He was using cocaine,” wrote one X user. Massie replied saying, “Form 4473 does not differentiate.”
Massie made headlines in 2021 when he posted a Christmas photo with every member of his family holding large guns in front of their tree – just days after a mass shooting at a school in Michigan.
