Pete Hegseth Stuns House Republican With Jaw-Dropping Answer to Question About Invading Greenland

Rep. Mike Turner’s (R-OH) attempt to “help out” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and protect him from having his words “twisted” quickly turned awkward during a House Armed Services Committee hearing Thursday as he grilled the Pentagon chief on potential plans for the U.S. to invade Greenland.

Turner launched into what sounded like a scripted lifeline to Hegseth amid testimony on the Pentagon’s FY26 budget, only to be left stunned by the very guarded answer.

“I just want to help you out because people try to twist your words,” Turner began, before teeing up what he seemed to think would be an easy denial: “You are not confirming in your testimony today that at the Pentagon there are plans for invading or taking by force Greenland, correct? That is not your testimony today?”

Rather than play along, Hegseth delivered a noncommittal line that only raised more questions: “All my testimony is, is that the Pentagon has plans for any number of contingencies.”

Turner, visibly rattled by the vagueness, tried again – cutting in to ask the question again more firmly.

“It is not your testimony today that there are plans at the Pentagon for taking by force or invading Greenland, correct?” he asked. “Because I sure as hell hope that it is not your testimony.”

Hegseth pivoted, dodging the premise: “We look forward to working with Greenland to ensure that it is secured from any potential threats.”

Since the beginning of his second term, President Donald Trump has commented about his desire to acquire Greenland, even by “force.” The Pentagon, however, has made no public comment on any specific plans regarding Greenland.
