Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) posted a photo on social media showing what appears to be a defaced name plaque outside the office of Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) on Friday night.
Republicans slammed Van Hollen on Thursday and Friday for traveling to El Salvador where the Democrat met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a migrant who was erroneously deported by the Trump administration to El Salvador where he was imprisoned last month.
The Department of Homeland Security acknowledged the deportation was an “error.”
Collins trolled the Van Hollen online through an altered plaque to suggest the lawmaker represents El Salvador rather than his constituents in Maryland.
“Hey @ChrisVanHollen, I went ahead and changed your office plaque for you,” Collins wrote Friday on X.
His post included an image of the office marker with “Maryland” replaced by “El Salvador.”
Following his visit with Abrego Garcia, Van Hollen spoke to reporters Friday at a lengthy press conference.
President Donald Trump responded to Van Hollen’s visit to El Salvador by calling him a “GRANDSTANDER” in a post on Truth Social.
“Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland looked like a fool yesterday standing in El Salvador begging for attention from the Fake News Media, or anyone,” Trump wrote. “GRANDSTANDER!!!”
Van Hollen told the media Friday that his support for Abrego Garcia was about more than one person:
As the federal courts have said, we need to bring Mr. Abrego Garcia home to protect his constitutional rights to due process. And it’s also important that people understand this case is not just about one man.
It’s about protecting the constitutional rights of everybody who resides in the United States of America. If you deny the constitutional right of one man, you threaten the constitutional rights and due process for everyone else in America.
The senator added, “The government, in this case the Trump administration, is asserting a right to stash away residents of this country in foreign prisons without the semblance of due process that is the foundation of our constitutional order.”
