Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) announced this week that he is putting forward a bill to send Americans “rebate checks” to offset price increases from President Donald Trump’s global tariffs.
Hawley, who hails from the economic populist wing of the GOP, announced the American Worker Rebate Act in a press release Monday.
“Americans deserve a tax rebate after four years of Biden policies that have devastated families’ savings and livelihoods. Like President Trump proposed, my legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump’s tariffs are returning to this country,” argued Senator Hawley in the statement.
The bill would send a rebate of $600 per adult and dependent child, totaling “$2,400 for a family of four,” according to the statement, which also noted that President Trump supports the measure.
Trump had previously suggested giving back some of the money collected in tariffs from U.S. consumers, which set a new record in June at $30 billion. Hawley’s announcement noted that “Several projections suggest the United States could see over $150 billion in tariff revenue in 2025 alone.”
The bill limits the amount individuals earning over $75,000 a year would receive, as well as reduces rebates by 5% for households making over $150,000. Hawley joined with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in 2020 in a similar effort to provide Americans with the Trump-signed stimulus checks during the Covid-19 pandemic.
