Trump Asked to Respond to Vance’s Speech That ‘Ruffled’ Feathers Overseas: ‘Europe Has to be Careful’
President Donald Trump was asked on Friday to respond to Vice President JD Vance’s speech at the Munich Security Conference earlier in the day, which left many in Europe irate.
“Vice President Vance’s speech to the conference has ruffled quite a few feathers in Europe,” began a reporter in the Oval Office.
“What did he say to ruffle them?” interjected Trump.
“He was talking about the freedom of speech and migration in Europe. Do you believe that European leaders have a fundamentally different view of the world than this administration?” asked the reporter.
“Well, I heard his speech. You are talking about JD’s speech, right?” Trump replied.
“Yes, sir,” said the reporter.
“I heard his speech and he talked about freedom of speech. And I think it’s true in Europe, it’s losing. They’re losing their wonderful right of freedom of speech. I see it. I mean, I thought he made a very good speech, actually, a very brilliant speech,” Trump replied, adding:
Europe has to be careful. And he talked about immigration. And Europe has a big immigration problem. Just take a look at what’s happened with crime. Take a look at what’s happening in various parts of Europe. I thought his speech was very well received, actually. I have heard very good remarks.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius reacted to Vance’s speech at the conference and called his remarks “not acceptable.”
“This democracy that was just called into question by the U.S. vice president. Not just for German democracy, but Europe as a whole. He spoke of the annulment of democracy. And if I understood him correctly, he compares the condition of Europe with the condition that prevails in some authoritarian regimes,” he said.
