Trump Pleads Ignorance, Blames RFK Jr. When Asked About New Surgeon General Nominee: ‘I Don’t Know Her’

President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was responsible for his new surgeon general pick.

On Wednesday, news broke that former Fox News contributor Janette Nesheiwat — Trump’s first pick for the role — was out following a series of social media attacks from Trump ally Laura Loomer. In Nesheiwat’s place, Trump nominated wellness influencer Dr. Casey Means.

That pick was met with a great deal of skepticism due to her support of controversial alternative medicines and her lack of qualifications. Means previously dropped out of a medical residency, and at the time of writing, her medical license was inactive.

While taking questions following his announcement of a trade deal with the United Kingdom, Trump was asked why he “picked her to be America’s top doctor.”

“Because Bobby thought she was fantastic,” Trump responded. “She’s highly — she’s a brilliant woman who went through Stanford, and as I understand it, she basically wanted to do, she wanted to be an academic as opposed to a surgeon. I think she graduated first in her class at Stanford, and Bobby really thought she was great. I don’t know her. I listened to the recommendation of Bobby. I met her yesterday and once before. She’s a very outstanding person — a great academic, actually — so I think she’ll be great.”
