New York Giants Deny Trump’s Story About Saquon Barkley

President Donald Trump welcomed the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles to the White House on Monday after they downed the Kansas City Chiefs back in February.

During his remarks, Trump claimed he spoke with the New York Giants’ head coach when Saquon Barkley was the team’s running back. The president said he told the organization to make sure the team kept Barkley.

“Six-time” Pro Bowl[er]. That’s pretty good,” Trump said of Barkley, who traveled with the president on Air Force One en route to the White House. “And by the way, I have to tell you something. I was with the Giants and the head coach, and some people. And I said, ‘Do anything you have to, but don’t lose Saquon.’ They lost Saquon.”

Trump did not name the Giants’ head coach, who is Brian Daboll. Barkley also played for former head coaches Joe Judge and Pat Shurmur in New York.

As those in attendance laughed at the Giants losing their star tailback to a division rival, Trump said he saw the move coming.

“That was not good,” he continued. “I called that one. That was an easy one to call because he played damn well for the Giants, I can tell you that. But he made the right decision because it is a team sport, and he has great people on this team.”

Trump went on to shower Barkley with accolades.

Hours later, Margaret Fleming of Front Office Sports reported that the Giants denied Trump’s claim, with a spokesperson stating that “there were no conversations” between Trump and the team regarding Barkley. Front Office Sports said that the White House did not respond to a request for comment.

After six seasons with the G-Men, Barkley became a free agent in March 2024 and signed with Philadelphia. The running back went gangbusters, racking up 2,005 yards on the ground in 16 games. Though he was just 100 yards away from the single-season record, Barkley sat out Week 18 to rest ahead of the postseason.
