American professional golfer Wyndham Clark lost the Players Championship in heartbreaking fashion when he celebrated a putt that eventually lipped out.
On the 18th hole of the final round on Sunday, Clark needed to hit a long birdie putt to force a playoff against reigning champion Scottie Scheffler. For about 99% of the putt attempt, the ball was perfectly lined up and it looked as if Clark had just made an incredibly clutch shot.
Then, the ball moved just a little too far to the left and caught the lip of the hole before coming back out. Clark’s miss was a matter of just millimeters as the ball was nearly halfway in the hole when it suddenly shot out the other side.
One … shot … short … 💔

Making the miss even more painful for Clark was the fact that he was about his pump his fist in celebration. In an instant, his body language shifted from elation to disbelief.

Clark was one of three players who had an opportunity to force a playoff with a birdie putt; but his was the closest and, ultimately, the most heartbreaking.
