Former President Donald Trump further cemented his control of the Republican party on Friday after his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, was elected as the party’s new co-chair.

Trump loyalist Michael Whatley was elected alongside Lara as the new co-chair of the Republican National Committee during a leadership gathering in Houston on Friday. Party officials gathered to replace outgoing chair Ronna McDaniel days after Trump became the party’s presumptive presidential nominee. Trump ousted McDaniel in favor of his own team, a point McDaniel made in her resignation speech.

Whatley previously served as chair of the North Carolina GOP and RNC general counsel and is a public advocate of the former president who has supported his rhetoric surrounding “election integrity.” In the past, he has spoken out against mail-in and absentee ballots and demanded voter ID requirements for voting.

Lara Trump will focus on boosting the RNC fundraising numbers heading into the 2024 general election. She previously told media outlets she would use “every single penny” at the RNC’s disposal to get Trump reelected.

Democrats have significantly more cash on hand than the RNC as previous federal filings from the end of January revealed the RNC had less than $9 million cash on hand while the DNC had $24 million.

Trump has dominated the Republican primary field, winning all but two contests so far. The former president will likely cross the delegate threshold to become the nominee later this month and will officially face President Joe Biden for a rematch this November.
