CNN’s Harry Enten Declares Trump ‘Out of Touch With the Concerns of Most Americans’ as Voters’ Tariff Concerns Grow

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten declared the polls show President Donald Trump is “out of touch” with most voters 100 days into his second term as concerns about his sweeping tariffs grow.

Enten joined anchor Kate Bolduan on CNN News Central on Tuesday and reported that surveys show that voters have gone from being most opposed to Trump’s “personality” on social media to one of his central policy proposals: the tariffs.

As markets have taken significant hits amid uncertainty about the state of various trade deals, the president has insisted his tariffs will lead to a manufacturing boom within the United States and end unfair trade deals with countries like China.

According to Enten, the top Trump-related term Googled during his first term was “Twitter”, while in his second term, it’s “tariffs.”

“They were thinking something associated with his personality. What is Donald Trump going to tweet today? What is he tweeting last night in the wee hours of the morning that I might have versus right now, what’s the number one term associated with Donald Trump on Google? It’s actually tariffs. So from the first term what you had was personality and temperament. In the second term, which you have is about an actual policy,” Enten reported.

Enten went on to cite polling from ABC News, Washington Post, and CNN, demonstrating that in 2017, 67% disapproved of Trump’s use of Twitter. In the same month in 2025, 65% disapprove of his tariffs.

“What you’re essentially seeing is folks are arriving to the same conclusion, but they’re getting there via different roads. In term one, they dislike Trump’s personality,” Enten said. “In term two, what they dislike is his policy. Again, the key policy being tariffs, and that of course is driving the economic approval rating going down.”

Citing ABC News and Washington Post data, Enten observed that 60% believe Trump is “out of touch” with the concerns of most Americans. In April 2017, that number sat at 58%.

“All roads lead to the same place. And that comes to this, which is Trump is out of touch with the concerns of most Americans,” he said. “In April of 2017, 58% of Americans said that Trump was out was out of touched with the concern of most American. Now it’s 60%. Again, what this comes to, Kate, is that Most Americans think that Trump has taken his eye off of the ball, but again, they’re reaching it for different reasons.”
