GOP Rep. Dismisses Anti-Trump ‘Secret Society’ at FBI: ‘Not Prone to Conspiracy Theories’

Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA) appeared on New Day for an interview with CNN’s Alisyn Camerota on Wednesday, and aimed some criticism at his Republican colleagues for their frenetic pronouncements about alleged FBI and Justice Department abuses.

Camerota first played a clip of Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), who said on Fox News Wednesday night that he had an “informant” telling him of an anti-Trump “secret society” in the FBI, holding “meetings off-sight.”

Johnson also described “corruption at the highest levels of the FBI” discovered by himself and other GOP lawmakers.

“Do you know what Senator Johnson is talking about?” Camerota asked Dent.

“I have no idea,” the Pennsylvania Republican, who was apparently appearing via hologram, replied.

“I do believe that the men and women of the FBI are good, honorable, professional people. I’m sure there are some bad apples, but we have a process to deal with that. I think it’s important that we not undermine the American public’s confidence in the Justice Department and the FBI.”

Camerota pressed whether Dent’s Republican colleagues are undermining the FBI, to which the congressman aimed some criticism at his fellow lawmakers:

“Well, I am not prone to conspiracy theories,” Dent replied. “I wish some of my colleagues would temper their rhetoric. We Republicans have often sold ourselves as the party of law enforcement, not just the state and local level, but the federal level as well.”

Dent continued that FBI agents are involved in counterterrorism operations, and put “their lives at risk every day.”

“We shouldn’t lose sight of that over the politics of this particular Russia investigation,” he said, adding that he has confidence in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe. “We shouldn’t do anything to undermine this investigation.”

When asked again about Johnson’s alleged “secret Skull and Bones-esque society” at the FBI, Dent was dismissive:

“I guess anything’s possible, but I can’t imagine there’s some sort of grand conspiracy here,” Dent said with a laugh. “Call me skeptical.”
