Kevin McCarthy Accuses Scott Pelley of Distorting Trump-Zelensky Call in 60 Minutes Interview (He Didn’t)
During an interview with Scott Pelley for 60 Minutes, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy falsely accused the CBS reporter of fabricating a quote from President Donald Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
McCarthy spoke to Pelley in order to deliver the Republican response to Democrats launching an impeachment inquiry in light of Trump’s scandalous efforts to pressure Ukraine into conducting an investigation of the Biden family. Pelley cited a part of the call where Zelensky expressed interest in buying defensive weapons from the United States, and Trump responded: “I would like you to do us a favor, though.”
“You just added another word,” McCarthy claimed.
“No, it’s in the transcript,” Pelley responded.
“He said ‘I’d like you to do a favor though?'” McCarthy asked.
“Yes,” Pelley affirmed. “It’s in the White House transcript.”
If you need a refresher, Pelley was referring to page 3 of the memorandum. This was the portion where Trump asked Zelensky to look into Crowdstrike and debunked conspiracy theories about Ukraine’s actions in the 2016 election, just before asking Zelensky to work with his allies to scrutinize the Bidens.
Pelley continued the interview by pressing McCarthy over his rebuke of the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry. He asked McCarthy if he thought it was “appropriate” for Trump to ask a foreign power to dig into his political rivals, and he also noted that the House Minority Speaker’s answer echoed the talking points the White House mistakenly sent to Democrats instead of Republicans.
