Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked about today’s explosive White House news story, in which senior aide Rob Porter has announced his resignation after allegations surfaced that he abused his ex-wives, both physically and emotionally.
Porter, a former aide to Sen. Orrin Hatch and close confidante of President Donald Trump, is also rumored to be dating communications director Hope Hicks.
Sanders stuck by Porter’s performance in the job and, notably, did not comment on the allegations themselves nor did she note if his security clearance has been revoked.
“I can tell you that Rob has been effective in his role as staff secretary and the president and chief of staff have had full confidence and trust in his abilities and his performance,” she said.
Sanders proceeded to read a statement prepared by Porter himself, which vehemently denied the allegations levied against him.
“These outrageous allegations are simply false,” he wrote. “I’ve been transparent and truthful about these vile claims, but I will not further engage publicly with a coordinated smear campaign.”
As to why the president would allow Porter to resign if the allegations are false, Sanders said “I think it was a personal decision that Rob made and one that he was not pressured to do.”
