In the wake of more shoes dropping in the Donald Trump Jr./Russian meeting story, CNN anchor Jake Tapper opened up today’s broadcast of The Lead by recapping the latest revelations while detailing how the Trump team has responded along the way.
Right off the bat, the CNN host took a shot at the administration and Trump Jr. for not following the golden rule in a PR crisis — get ahead of the story.
“The maxim for crisis management in Washington, D.C. — when beset with a scandal, get out all the information. Get it all out as soon as possible. And get it out on your own terms,” he said. “Apparently in keeping with its desire to do things differently, the Trump team seems determined to violate this sage advice in every possible way.”
Tapper then pointed out that earlier this week they likely thought that the worst was behind them after Trump Jr. released the email chain about the meeting and then told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that he had revealed “everything.”
“This was not everything,” Tapper dryly noted.
The CNN host went on to detail the latest news surrounding the June 2016 meeting, including reports that an ex-Soviet spy and others were in attendance. He also brought up Donald Trump’s campaign speech from June 7th, the day the meeting was scheduled, pointing out that he promised a big upcoming speech about Hillary Clinton where he was going to hit her about her shady dealings with foreign governments.
“That major speech never materialized,” Tapper explained.
He ended the segment by referencing Rep. Trey Gowdy’s complaints about the way the White House has dealt with the Russian collusion story and the Trump Jr’s issue particularly.
“When he complained about the White House non-strategy of drip, drip, drip, this is what he was talking about,” he concluded.
