‘Total Lie!’ Arch-Nemeses Scott Jennings and Catherine Rampell GO AT IT Over Trump Tariff Agreements
CNN political commentators Scott Jennings and Catherine Rampell went at it yet again on Monday night during a heated segment about the agreements President Donald Trump struck with Mexico and Canada to avoid a trade war earlier in the day.
Trump had originally promised to enforce enormous tariffs against both countries but reached deals with Mexico’s president and Canada’s prime minister to delay their implementation for another month while they discuss long-term solutions for securing their respective borders with the United States.
Jennings and Rampell disagreed vociferously about whether the agreements constituted a victory for Trump or not.
After Jennings touted the agreements as evidence that America’s two neighbors couldn’t “pussyfoot around anymore” when it comes to helping address the fentanyl and border crises, Rampell mocked him the idea that Trump had achieved anything of consequence.
“I mean, I don’t know what Trump wanted in this situation,” she began. “Again, he didn’t actually get anything. But if he were to put these tariffs in place, they would be very painful-”
“Total lie,” scoffed Jennings.
“-for American consumers. Okay, Scott, I mean this is, this is public information!” continued Rampell. ”
“It’s a total lie, I’m sorry,” asserted Jennings again. “He got what he wanted. He got an agreement from our neighbors to do more on the border. That’s what he wanted and he got it.”
“To do exactly what they already have been doing,” insisted Rampell.
“I understand you’re the minister of propaganda tonight, but you don’t have to be. You could just say, ‘Hey, all’s well that ends well here.’ Come on,” shot back Jennings.
“If you don’t know that these countries have-, are committing to do exactly what they have already been doing, either you haven’t done your homework, or you think the American people are idiots because again, they’re doing exactly what they were already were doing,” said Rampell.
The pair continued to snipe at each other until anchor Phil Mattingly finally stepped in and broke it up.
