Trump Media CEO Devin Nunes Claims ‘Twitter is Kind of a Ghost Town’ While Truth Social Craters

Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) CEO Devin Nunes hilariously declared Twitter “a ghost town” as he glossed over his troubled attempts to get Truth Social off the ground.

The former congressman joined Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo on Thursday to talk about Twitter’s future, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk joins the social network’s board of directors. Here’s how Nunes reacted to that “very interesting” news:

The goal that President Trump has, and what I have and our team here at Truth Social is to open the internet back up so the American people can get their voice back. So it’s clear that Twitter is kind of a ghost town. They desperately need Elon Musk to be there, so it is probably something that Elon wants to do. I think he probably believes in free speech like we do, but at the same time, there is not very much activity other Twitter right now especially when you compare to sites like ours where we’re just in our beginning stages as we continue to test and bring people on day by day. Our interactions already beating Twitter.

Nunes’ claims are laughable for a lot of reasons, most of which have to do with how many things have gone south for Truth Social.

The site publicly launched in February, though it has no website of its own, it can only be accessed through Apple, and it’s not available on Android. On top of that, the website is grappling with security concerns, a staff exodus, massive waitlists for people who want to join, and multiple reports indicating downloads and usage tanked after launch day.

Bartiromo offered a degree of skepticism for Truth Social’s chances, noting how Twitter’s stock went up with Musk’s entry, whereas Digital World Acquisition — the special-purpose acquisition company TMTG is merging with — saw a drop on the same day. Nunes seemed unbothered by this as he claimed Truth Social remains a work in progress (even though he promised it was going to be “fully operational” by the end of March).

Later in the interview, Bartiromo brought her other guest, Lou Basenese, into the conversation — and he confronted Nunes on Truth Social’s woes while pointing out Twitter’s comparatively massive engagement. He also questioned whether Truth Social would have any reason to exist if Twitter ever let Trump return from his post-January 6th exile.

“Would President Trump go back on Twitter if allowed,” Basenese asked, “and at that point, what do you do with business you are trying to build?”

Nunes responded by once again calling Twitter “a ghost town,” so Basenese interjected “Sir! There’s 217 million users there though. It’s not a ghost town.”
