Alison Hammond Calls Out Cliff Richard Over Body Shaming Elvis Presley Anecdote

This Morning host Alison Hammond challenged singer Sir Cliff Richard Tuesday over remarks made about Elvis Presley’s weight gain during an anecdote about why he didn’t want to meet him.

Richard, 83, joined the ITV hosts Hammond and Dermot O’Leary to discuss his extensive career and interactions with other famous personalities in promoting his new book.

During the interview Richard disclosed that he once passed up the chance to photograph with the king of rock-and-roll, citing Presley’s weight gain as the reason.

“He’d put on a lot of weight,” Richard commented, adding, “I thought, ‘if I’m taking a photograph with him, and it’s going to be hanging on my refrigerator, he’s gotta look good.’ I put it off. And of course then he died.”

Hammond said: “Should never have put it off just because they’re a little bit heavier.

Richards continued: “If you’re a fan of somebody, if you get the chance to meet them, meet them, even if they’ve put on weight.”

Challenging Richard, the host humorously asked: “Is that why you don’t want me at your house?”

At this point the singer seemed to get the point.

This exchange sparked significant reactions on social media, with many viewers praising Hammond for her stance against body-shaming.
