London Clinic staff are under investigation after an unauthorised attempt to “access” the Princess of Wales’ medical records.

The incident at the private clinic where Kate Middleton underwent abdominal surgery on January 16, amid growing curiosity about the Princess’ welfare, was reported by the Mirror and confirmed by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), which manages data protection violations.

The ICO said: “We can confirm that we have received a breach report and are assessing the information provided.”

The data breach has reportedly also prompted police investigation, according to Health Minister Maria Caulfield, and was triggered after at least one clinic staff’s attempt to pry into Kate’s confidential notes.

Speaking to LBC, Caulfield said: “My understanding is that police have been asked to look at it – whether they take action is a matter for them. So there are particularly hefty implications if you are looking at notes for medical records that you should not be looking at.”

The story comes amid heightened speculation and swirling conspiracy theories as to Middleton’s whereabouts and absence from public life in the wake of her surgery sparked by.a doctored Mother’s Day photo that triggered a “kill notice” by major global news agencies. Soon after the future Queen apologised for the confusion and claimed responsibility for the edits.

Curiosity was amplified after Prince William was recorded with Middleton in footage by a local at the Windsor Farm Shop on Saturday. Yet the video only served to amplify conspiracy, as internet users claimed that the person with the Prince was not Middleton.
