Rishi Sunak Apologises To Fans Of Adidas Sambas For ‘Destroying Fashion Icon’
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak issued a “fulsome apology” to fans of Adidas Samba trainers, after his recent fashion choice sparked a wave of backlash across social media.
Caught on an Instagram video sporting the classic sneakers, Sunak’s attempt to blend in with the trendy set didn’t just fall flat—it set off alarms.
“I issue a fulsome apology to the Samba community,” Sunak said during a live spot on LBC with Nick Ferrari.
He continued:“In my defence I would say I have been wearing Adidas trainers and Sambas and others for many, many years. The first pair my brother got for me many, many years ago. Those were my first pair of fun Adidas trainers as a Christmas present. I haven’t looked back since.”
But the damage, it seems, may already be done. Fashionistas at GQ have been quick to declare this the “death knell” for the Samba’s street cred. Pundit Murray Clark said Sunak had “taken an eternally cool sneaker and ruined it for everyone.”
Meanwhile, online commentators lamented the loss of the Samba’s allure.
Just how far the prime minister’s penance will go remains to be seen.
