Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman unleashed on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Tuesday in her resignation letter, accusing him of “betrayal” and claiming he “manifestly and repeatedly failed to deliver” on promises made during his leadership race.
In the letter, posted to X, Braverman, who was ousted in the recent reshuffle, revealed in her letter to Sunak that her support in the contest, following Liz Truss’s resignation last autumn, was contingent on specific conditions.
These policies, recorded in writing, included reducing legal immigration, maintaining core Brexit laws, and issuing official guidelines to schools about acknowledging biological sex.
She wrote: “You have manifestly and repeatedly failed to deliver on every single one of these key policies.
“Either your distinctive style of government means you are incapable of doing so. Or, as I must surely conclude now, you never had any intention of keeping your promises.”
Braverman blasted Sunak for choosing “wishful thinking as a comfort blanket to avoid having to make hard choices.”
She was replaced by James Cleverly as Home Secretary Monday, with Lord David Cameron taking Cleverly’s role as Foreign Secretary.
Sunak decided on Braverman’s exit following intense pressure over the past weekend.
The move comes after Braverman authored an article in The Times criticizing the Metropolitan Police for their approach to a pro-Palestinian rally that had been planned for Armistice Day.
According to a statement on the Conservative Party’s social media, Sunak’s cabinet reshuffle Monday is intended to “reinforce his leadership team in government to make long-term decisions for a brighter future.”
