Feud Alert! Sarah Palin, Fox News, Rapper Common And White House Ready To Brawl?

In the great tradition of rap feuds, this one definitely is not as violent as some past conflicts, but it sure is escalating just as quickly. First Lady Michelle Obama raised some conservative eyebrows by inviting the rapper Common to a poetry event at the White House. And that was enough to trigger a wave of outrage.

First it was the conservative website Daily Caller that recognized Common was a controversial guest to invite, “in part because his poetry includes threats to shoot police and at least one passage calling for the ‘burn[ing]‘ of then-President George W. Bush.” Then the Fox News website Fox Nation reacted with a headline labeling Common to be a “vile rapper.” And Sarah Palin weighed in too, tweeting in reaction to the Daily Caller’s story “Oh lovely, White House…”

Yet CNN commentator Roland Martin notes “not even casual hip hop fans would characterize Common as a controversial rapper.” Additionally, Common has frequently appeared on Def Poetry Jam and has acted in many mainstream films including American Gangster, Wanted and Date Night.

So far the First Lady has remained silent, but Common took to Twitter to respond to all of his new “fans.” Common responded “So apparently Sarah Palin and Fox News doesn’t like me.” He also laughed at the description of himself as “vile.” With Donald Trump‘s popularity fading, might Palin now desire picking up Trump’s strange habit of feuding with celebrities?

I believe he was also a member of Rev. Wright congregation. Ah the people the Obama’s CHOOSE to surround themselves with. It speaks volumes.

As Media Matters caught, Fox News was for Common before it was against him. Do you think the change of heart might have anything to do with the fact that he was invited to the White House?

Can you imagine if Laura had invited a poet that wrote about killing black people? And I love that Martin of CNN defends this by saying cop killing isn’t controversial in the rap world. Looks good on ya. ;)

Really Sarah? Why not worry about Bristol who has reconstructed her face and will be whoring herself for more coin on another reality show on the BIO channel. This woman is pathetic. Hey Sarah, what did you think of Tiny Fey’s performance last Saturday? Notice how the First Lady keeps ignoring you? It’s as if you didn’t exists. Clearly her Ivy league education has paid off!

I hope you feel the same way if a poet of the KKK gets invited to the White House.

There’s a tradition of previous White Houses hosting people with purportedly controversial lyrics.

Or how Bristol got 262K from a “charity” that discourages teen pregnancies? A charity that only gave 35k to clinics to help teen mothers while that phony bitch was shacked up with her boyfriend while she was preaching abstinence. Only someone with the lowest standards could be okay with that payoff! One that was based solely on her lame ass mom’s fame.

By the way, this is off topic but, I see that mediaite has posted the story on Donald’s plunge into the abyss. I guess Rush and many of you lemmings here were wrong about Trump beating this President even with this tough economy. Do you ever get tired of being wrong?

But roughly half-a-year ago, Fox News had a different tone about Common. In an October 2010 report for FoxNews.com, reporter Jason Robinson interviewed the “rap legend” and told him, “your music is very positive. And you’re known as the conscious rapper. How important is that to you, and how important do you think that is to our kids?”

back in 2003, First Lady Laura Bush held a poetry evening, and she invited several poets to reprise the work of Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman. Although none of those poets had urged violence against a president, Bush canceled the event after left-of-center poets protested and threatened to disrupt the event.

Here are some of Common’s greatest hits:

In fact, Common rapped at the 2008 New Year celebration at Wright’s church. “I’m gonna let you know / No people want drama / We gonna vote for my man / What’s his name? Obama … Revolution is here,” he sang, and the Rev. Wright danced in the background. …

“Flyer say Free Mumia on my freezer,” he raps in another. Mumia Abu-Jamal is an incarcerated former member of the Black Panther Party who was convicted in 1981 for killing a Philadelphia police officer. …

Common has also been a vocal opponent of mixed race relationships and believes black men and white women should not date. In one rap he says, “I don’t know what it is / but white girls gettin’ ass / I know what it is / It’s cash.”

So the left didn’t allow a reading of Emily Dickinson yet you don’t see a disconnect with Common?

  • TfT

Funny how the left’s double standards just jump right out at you (if you know the facts) and funny how mediaite just doesn’t bother to report that the WH poetrywas SHUT DOWN by the liberal lefty loons, but now, if you raise an eyebrow about some vile rapper – what’s next – MSNBC gonna call Sarah a racist?

Oh boy, chalk another one up to blatant double standards.

I don’t know anything about that episode, but it would seem the people the Bush’s were going to invite were the ones who were planning to make the fuss? Maybe the Bush’s should have invited some more accommodating poets you think? Heck I would have went for a chance to shake hands, get a four star meal and steal a couple souvenirs. At best, your point goes under the “two wrongs don’t make a right” sub-heading.

Nobody shut it down, Bush could have simply invited someone else. My guess is that they really didn’t want to go through with it so they cooked up an excuse to cop out and blame those evil leftists. Nor was MSNBC doing what FOX is doing now, whipping up their mutts.

If a White person were to write a poem about hanging Obama, they’d get at least two years in jail.
But if a Black guy writes a poem about burning a White President, he gets a White House invitation from Michelle Obama.

‘Burning Bush’ comment draws prison term
    Man plans to appeal

    CNN 12/06/02

Original Link: http://www.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/12/06/burning.bush.ap (Removed from CNN website)

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (AP) — A man who made a remark about a “burning Bush” during the president’s March 2001 trip to Sioux Falls was sentenced Friday to 37 months in prison.

Richard Humphreys of Portland, Oregon was convicted in September of threatening to kill or harm the president and said he plans to appeal. He has said the comment was a prophecy protected under his right to free speech.

Humphreys said he got into a barroom discussion in nearby Watertown with a truck driver. A bartender who overheard the conversation realized the president was to visit Sioux Falls the next day and told police Humphreys talked about a “burning Bush” and the possibility of someone pouring a flammable liquid on Bush and lighting it.

“I said God might speak to the world through a burning Bush,” Humphreys testified during his trial. “I had said that before and I thought it was funny.”

    ********

Well apparently A.R. they were lynched…….. just cus theyr Italians.

After their increased immigration to the US in the late 19th century, Italian Americans also became lynching targets, chiefly in the South, where they were recruited for laboring jobs. On March 14, 1891, eleven Italian Americans were lynched in New Orleans after a jury acquitted them in the murder of David Hennessy, an ethnic Irish New Orleans police chief.[20]

The eleven were falsely accused of being associated with the Mafia. This incident was one of the largest mass lynchings in U.S. history.[21] A total of twenty Italians were lynched in the 1890s.

Although most lynchings of Italian Americans occurred in the South, Italians had not immigrated there in great numbers. Isolated lynchings of Italians also occurred in New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.

Palin’s been doing it for three years now. Anything to earn a headline. The woman is a raw nerve that jerks reflexively whenever a gentle breeze blows by..

Commons is likely smart enough to know that Fox and Palin aren’t fans because, well, he’s black and he’s telling the story of urban blacks. White privilege doesn’t want to hear that… and when it does, it deems its frustration and anger “vile.”

Meanwhile, the GOP won’t honor the Navy SEALS who kills bin Laden, cuz it’s just soooo over honoring the military, don’tcha know.

    Who’s “vile?”

They obviously have never listened to the classic “I Used To Love H.E.R” where he was attacking guys like Cube for his misogny and “violent” lyrics. FLOTUS didn’t invite Ice Cube. By the way, are cons this slow? Do they not realize that he has participated in WH events before? He was there during the lighting of the Christmas tree. Common is invited because he’s a big Chicago icon especially in the HipHop world. I hope the WH does not pull his invite. They need to realize these knuckle-dragging teatards will never approve of ANYONE they invite since their beef is not really with the invitee but the inviter.

Why? What makes rap a less viable genre? Lack of live band? Then listen to Distant Relatives by Nas and Damian Marley! Or is it just the age old standard that everything black people make is somehow less respectable? And please try to tell me that’s not the case because I have a bunch of Eminem and Vanilla Ice stuff waiting on you.

My white great grandmother was murdered and the white man who murdered her was very nearly lynched. The only thing that saved him was the police got a five minute advanced notice that a lynch mob was on its way to the jailhouse to get him. White people were lynched all the time. But the only lynchings we ever hear about are blacks and one jew who was probably guilty.

I think it was Frank Zappa who described most rock lyrics as doggeral; the same could certainly be said of rap. Do people read great poets any more? Go read Ode on a Grecian Urn and compare it to the rap lyrics that now pass as poetry these days. Good grief, Is there any comparison?

I’m sure the negative rating this comment elicited was for the obvious reason that comparing anything to OOAGU is unfair; it is a poem, as Faulkner once famously observed, worth a great many (dead) old ladies.

I’m not in favor of mob justice, but those two guys were not lynched solely because of the color of their skin. To be honest, the first time that I heard the word teabagging, it was about those right wing reactionaries, the same ones who loved Bush to death for 8 years, who started dressing up in their phony 1770s outfits and channeling the founding fathers. I always figured they were basically morons, since they pretended they were so versed in history, they should have realized that teabags weren’t around back then. So like Mrs Coo Coo Clock (Glockenspiel), here, they should have done some research on the term teabagging before they came up with the idea of telling their saps to “teabag”, or mail teabags, to their congressmen.

HipHop is not a university or college. First and foremost, it’s entertainment and a way of life. When you go to watch a movie, you expect to be entertained. The same thing applies to HipHop music and artists. They are ARTISTS. They act, the part. I don’t think anyone was picketing Schwarzenegger or Vin Diesel for shooting at cops in their movies. Why judge other artists for doing the same thing in a different medium? If you don’t like the content, don’t listen to it. If you can learn anything while engaged in it, then good. There are different types of HipHop artists. Honestly, if one doesn’t even know what HipHop entails, they really shouldn’t comment on this particular genre. Eminem is a potent MC, IMO, the best MC this past decade, but, he’s not in the same category as Common. Em is more of a battle MC, a shock-jock, clowning MC while guys like Common, Mos def, Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Nas are/were more like “social commentary” MCs. they will approach the issues differently. Then there are other rappers who are just complete garbage (rap about vacuous topics) and actually give the wrong idea of what the actual INTENT of HipHop. The problem with “hip hop” is that its underlying aesthetics are just plain ugly. It can be used to perpetuate violence and ridicule and even humor and happiness, but how does it express the beautiful or ineffable? I suppose one could argue that the genre’s creators come from bleek backgrounds (due to white racism, of course) lacks beauty so what should one expect their art to look like.

I don’t disagree with that latter fact, but, I disagree with the earlier premise connecting the intent of the violence (by blacks against whites) to race. This is not comparable to the intentional targetting of black victims by racist whites during Jim Crow. That was the only reason you used the word “revenge” in your paragraph — unless there was some equivocation going on there by you. It’s fallacious. There is a higher number of white victims because…errr..there is a bigger demo of whites in the USA today than blacks or any other race. It’s a case of probability. If I had a sack full of marbles and 70% were white, 14% were black, and the other % consisted of an assortment of colors, if I randomly picked a marble from that sack — most likely than not it will be white. Same case with victimology here. It doesn’t mean that the victims are being targetted because they are white.Criminals are opportunistic…generally. Correct facts. Wrong conclusion.

The problem with criticism of rap music–and by criticism, I mean that which is written by professional critics of the genre–is that so much of it is written by people who are easily impressed by the shallow political pretentions of its practitioners. It appears that Common cleans up very well- the picture doesn’t show him to be anything too crazy. So the chances are good- as with many artists- that they have a adult versions and the cleaned up versions that WalMart will carry on their shelves. Happens all the time. I seem to recall Jami Fox making a comment about the White House telling him to “keep it clean” so I don’t imagine there will be any kind of an issue. I think Common is a grown man that can understand the decorum needed for a performance in the White House. I think people like Palin and all the rest of those who are making negative comments wouldn’t know who the guy is- they just know he is a black rapper and that makes him bad in their book. They probably don’t know there are “G” rated rappers and even kids who are rappers too. They still can’t get over the fact there is a black family living in the White House and they don’t like that this family has made a real effort to include all kinds of people in this White House- as performers and as guests. Good for the First Lady. It is nice to see something different for a change.

Michael Jackson “broke” the racial “barrier” on MTV (the video equivalent of rock radio station) around 1983. As for rap, I don’t remember seeing “Rapture” on MTV, I know there was a video for the song, but I don’t recall seeing it on MTV; and I was there to observe it if it was. The first “rap” videos that got heavy rotation on MTV was “King of Rock” and “Rock Box” by Run DMC.This would have been around 1984, just a few years after MTV started. Later, “Walk this Way” Run DMC’s rap-ified version of the Aerosmith song got heavy, heavy rotation. The Beastie Boys and LL Cool J also got a lot of play at that time. Then just a few more along the way: Parents Just Don’t Understand (Will Smith), Can’t Touch This (MC Hammer), Wild Thing (Ton Loc), Bust A Move (Young MC), Dre Day (Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg).,,

I can go on and on listing non=white rappers who received heavy support via MTV prior to eminem.

    Description of Ad Hominem

Translated from Latin to English, “Ad Hominem” means “against the man” or “against the person.”

An Ad Hominem is a general category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of some irrelevant fact about the author of or the person presenting the claim or argument. Typically, this fallacy involves two steps. First, an attack against the character of person making the claim, her circumstances, or her actions is made (or the character, circumstances, or actions of the person reporting the claim). Second, this attack is taken to be evidence against the claim or argument the person in question is making (or presenting). This type of “argument” has the following form:

    Person A makes claim X.
Person B makes an attack on person A.
    Therefore A’s claim is false.
The reason why an Ad Hominem (of any kind) is a fallacy is that the character, circumstances, or actions of a person do not (in most cases) have a bearing on the truth or falsity of the claim being made (or the quality of the argument being made).

Real American and Donna et al, do you see what has happened? You lost the argument so you became attack dogs.

These people are just in it to make money and could give 2-shits about the elements of HipHop.

I’ve seen Nas live. As I said, I have no overall problem with rap or hip hop, just not as a way to teach kids about anything credible.

Music, lyrics, genre, is an expression of culture. To relegate one lyric, of one song does not an artist make.

Common has composed many songs worthy of discussion- I am not defending his words, but rather his right to express those words and experiences in a way that makes sense to his culture and especially those with whom can relate with firsthand knowledge to what he is talking about. Honestly, I really believe had Sarah Palin NOT tweeted, this would never have been “news”. There have been far more controversial figures invited to the WH, than a hiphop artist.

well.. a better person for the event is a very fair argument. Why are oil companies charging so much for their oil? Main reason is, because they can. Why can they? Because all the oil companies formed a CARTEL, a Cartel is a group of companies joined together and cooperates to STOP COMPETETION, a sort of clever method of PRICE FIXING. There is abundance of Crude Oil and they continue to raise the price until a large number of buyers stop buying, they then lower the price again until they start buying again. “They call this what the market will bear”. The people using these barrels of oil are (captive customers) which makes the business men suppliers look like greedy hard core profiteers. This does maximize their profits but they are killing the bees that make the Honey. Do they also think; “there are plenty more bees where they came from”?
The Gasoline prices are pretty much the same. They raise the price of a gallon of gasoline until a large number of people quit buying, then they lower the price until everyone starts buying again. This is a sensible way of arriving at a price for products not related to the necessities of life. Price gouging on products produced for the necessities of life and economic stability and progress should be classed as a heinous act and unethical in all business. On the necessities of Life, people will buy till they go broke or die. That is no civilized way of setting prices.
The only thing greedy business men understand is legislation. Legislation is like a contract. Every business man will tell you, when doing business never work without a contract. New Legislation should be implemented and adjusted frequently to keep business fair and running smoother.
