GOP Congressional Candidate Rick Barber’s New Ad Tells Us Slavery Still Exists

video

First, Rick Barber told you to gather your armies against the oppressive IRS. Now, he wants you to see healthcare reform for what it really is: forcing one man to work for another.

In other words: slavery.

Alabama’s tea partier Congressional candidate, who is still hanging out with George Washington in this ad, brings in another important man: Abraham Lincoln. Because if anyone knows about slavery, it’s Abe:

“Hey Abe, if someone’s forced to work for months and pay taxes so that a total stranger can get a free meal, a medical procedure or a bailout…what’s that called?”

“…Slavery!”

Cue the images of concentration camps and slaves, ending with the gates to Auschwitz that read, “Arbeit Macht Frei.” Moral of the story: “We are becoming slaves to our government.”

Yet Barber confirms with George Washington that the whiskey tax was okay–because it was an excise tax to alleviate military debt. As Mother Jones says, the overall idea seems to be that “taxes are good when they finance military revolutions, but bad when they pay for social ones.”

Just over a minute into the ad, you ask yourself why the video is almost 3 minutes long yet Barber seems to have finished speaking. The ad segues into the fourth stanza of the Star-Spangled Banner. And there’s even a little shout-out to Glenn Beck and Fox News toward the end.

Wait, slaves only worked a few months out of the year?

    I didn’t know that.

  • Patrick Henry

A little over the top on presentation, but I agree with the message.

  • notsofast

    Right message; wrong messenger.

  • blurgh.

Such an equivocation is an insult to history.

  • bc206

Right. Well, I have to go now Rick, because I’m due back on the planet Earth

  • m

Why does Rick Barber hate our military?

  • Ination

I’m waiting for Bruce Campbell to be in one of these ads.

  • lazzzlo

That was interesting…I never would have noticed “Arbeit Macht Frei.” if I wasn’t looking for it.

  • lazzzlo

    That’s wrong.

  • notsofast

But libs have fine people like Ted, Karl, the real johnt and BFD representing the current liberal thought for us.

  • http://www.karlspensen.blogspot.com Karl Spensen

BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 (this ad AND the dry William F. Buckley wit of notsofast!!!1)!!1

  • Ted

And I think libs everywhere can be thankful that nutsomush represents the current tea-bag thought; and does a damn fine job at it as well!!

  • Iris

Yes, nutso fast represents the current tea bag thought and its so popular they had to cancel their national convention due to lack of interest. Good job teabaggers.

  • valkyrie101

Come on, this is classic parody, give the guy a break.

  • mproust

Hi Venal, I guess Dan Abrams was scrapping the bottom of the barrel when he hired you.

  • valkyrie101

This IRS rage is similar to Joe custard man’s gripe, apparently the idea is that federal taxes, per se, are bad. Because clearly there are a lot of people who object to using massive amounts of their tax revenue to pay for the war in the middleeast, or to farmers to not grow crops. How is their case against taxes any different than those who object to spending on health care for the needy? Is all that not slavery too, according to tea party thinking?

  • valkyrie101

99% of the people would not be effected by a tax increase at the upper tax brackets, that is, taxing the very rich, but the very rich nevertheless has them out there like lackies to argue their case, on trumped up charges of abuse of liberty, while they pocket the biggest windfalls since Andrew Carnegie.

  • mproust

Walkure, notwithstanding, the ad made perfect sense. It’s called a “divergent” opinion. This is America, right? We still have freedom of speech, right? What was Venal’s point?

  • Patrick Henry

Val, in listening to comments from some members of Congress and the President, I think all of us who pay any income tax now are looking at an increase soon. I am not against paying taxes, but I think a great deal of the money the government takes in is being wasted, by both Democrats and Republicans. I have not gone to any Tea Party meetings or joined the Tea party, but I do believe in a balanced budget and a much smaller federal government. I think their are millions of everyday Americans out their that see things the same way. I guess we will see if that is true in November.

  • valkyrie101

    Patrick,
So correct me if I am wrong: you do not disaprove of taxes, per se? For you, it is a question of prudently spending the tax revenue? And it is not a tax increase, per se, that you object to, but a tax increase to pay for things which you consider “wasteful”? So I will ask, how do you determine what is wasteful and what is not wasteful, other than by the democratic process, that is, the legislative process, which authorizes the spending?

  • Patrick Henry

Val, that is a good question. Since I am not in a position to make those determinations, I have to vote for someone I can trust thinks as I do and will make the correct decisions as my representative. For instance, one of my Senators is John Cornyn. I read recently where he took a trip to Europe on the government’s behalf and spent an ungodly amount of taxpayer money staying in the best hotels, going to the best restaurants, etc. We also paid for his spouse to go along. I wrote his office and let him know that I was not happy with that trip. Now I know the amount spent was a drop in the bucket in our budget, but it is the principal of the thing. Spend our money wisely, it was hard earned.

  • valkyrie101

    Patrick,
As a stockholder, I would make the same argument with regard to the corporate honchos. I guarantee you, when it comes to waste, those guys compete very well with the U.S. government. But they are making so much that waste hardly seems to matter. The U.S. government does not pay its workers 100+ million. But that happens all the time in the corporate world. Some guys, with stock options, make hundreds of millions. And in the securities industry, hundreds of millions in profits is not at all rare. The tea party says it does not care about corporate waste because that is a private matter. However, corporate waste puts men out of work and is just as bad for the overall economy as government waste. At least government waste employs people.

We are slaves – but not to the government. We are now slaves to the Private Sector because of Conservative politicians who have favored them over individuals for the past generation. Most Conservatives know this and that’s why they lie so loudly about a fictional oppressive government – because it gets people distracted from that simple fact.

Hey – these are the folks who oppose a minimum wage and want to cut unemployment for out of work Americans! That’s the government oppression they really hate! The Conservative Movement exists to make sure the balance of power stays firmly with the Private Sector and not with working Americans. Ads like this, illustrate the inherent weakness of the Conservative philosophy by showing how politicians who embrace it are forced into these ridiculous and dishonest displays.

Slaves don’t get paid for their services
Slaves can’t move around freely without the permission of their owners
    Slaves don’t own businesses
Slaves don’t have any right against their masters
Slaves cant complain, they just shut up and take it in
Slaves get whipped when they disobeyed or disrespect their masters
Slaves that are female are taken against their free will
Slave is subservient to their masters, go to India and see those who were born to serve others from the day they were born to the day they die.

This is the stupid Right’s attempt to claim victim hood. He did it the first time and since there was no repercussion, he can only do more stupid and outrageous thing. All the jokers who are defending him, I’d like you to nominate yourselves for a day to experience a Slave’s life.

  • Gruenewald Michael

Cheap taxes might well be a good and proper policy, but it hardly rises to the level of a founding principle, nor of a sacrament. There is something distinctly blasphemous about this advertisement.

  • valkyrie101

    Gruen,
I loved the way you put that. So true.

The only slaves today are the Muslim women…and someday they will wake up and revolt against their masters…the dregs of society…

Keep them out of America…we don’t need nor do we want them…their beliefs are misplaced and they will never accept the freedoms of America…

We need more peo;le like Rick to take our country back…away from the current administration this is so corrupt the good Lord is raining down misfortune on this country….
