Jon Stewart Addresses Defeated 9/11 First Responders Bill With Segment: “I Give Up”

video

Last week the House of Representatives defeated a bill that aimed to provide over $7 billion in aid to first responders of the attacks on 9/11 who have been negatively effected by toxins in the air. Rep. Anthony Weiner‘s fiery speech on the House floor over the bill received a lot of attention for the rare emotion he displayed. Last night, Jon Stewart discussed Weiner’s speech, and broke down the reasons behind it in a new segment called “I Give Up.”

While Mr. Stewart is extremely well-regarded for his comedy stylings, he’s just as well received for his thoughtful and consistent, cut-through-the-bullshit commentary on news, politics and cultural issues in general. So while the following segment has plenty of laughs, it also includes a somewhat surprisingly angry Stewart, for which the 9/11 first responders bill appears to transcend traditional political rhetoric. And rightly so.

Given that Stewart lives in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan, just a few short blocks from Ground Zero, and was likely personally witness the heroic actions of the first responders, one can certainly understand his anger. In fact, Stewart there is a fairly clear jump cut in the middle of the segment where Stewart appears to have gone off script, calling Rep. Kevin Brody (R – TX) “asshole” for opposing the bill, which is followed by “sorry, this makes me angry.’ Producers of the show likely shortened the segment in post-production to meet Comedy Central’s timing requirements.

Another, lighter, reason for Stewart’s personal connection to this story is that it features a close and old friend, Rep. Weiner. Stewart revealed int he segment that he and the Queens Congressman once shared a summer rental together, though he added its “not as gay as it sounds.”

Another funny segment, and really highlights the current state of our legislative process. The Republicans oppose everything, the Democrats are too cowardly to take bold initiative in the face of the coming elections.

But this is another revealing example of where Republican interests truly lie. They would pretend to care about process and tax increases, even when the example they cite is preventing offshore corporations from paying taxes on income they earned within the United States. This, along with going whole hog trying to prevent the expiration of tax breaks for the wealthy during a time when our nation truly needs that tax money to help everyone else that doesn’t make $250,000 as a single person (not to mention to roughly three trillion knock down on the deficit) leaves no question.

The deficit is a simple beast: you look at how much we take in via taxes and subtract spending. They don’t want improved and affordable healthcare, they don’t want to ofer assistance to 9/11 responders now debilitated by illnesses caused from breathing in that toxic mixture – but they will defend a minor tax break for the rich and a tax loop hole for multinational corporations.

And somehow, the Democrats just can’t inform the populace at large about this. It’s surreal.

And, the Democrats were targeted as well. More fair and balanced than anything I’ve ever seen on FOX.

I suppose we ought to thank the Republicans for denying the heroes of 9/11, the First Responders, assistance for their extraordinary health issues because one of them might be in the US illegally. I am pretty enurse if I were caught in a burning, collapsing building and someone came to my assitance the first thing I might do is determined whether they speak English as a second language.

Ironic, isn’t it? Someone doing what is the best in America, being extraordinarily good Americans, and the Republicans want to castigate and punish them because of their immigration status.

The whole thing is sad…I think Stewart could have focused more on why the majority forced the 2/3 vote.

I don’t get my news from Jon Stewart but he does somewhat cut to the chase.

His Israel/Lebanon commentary was way off line tho.

Commentary, parody, pundits…you can only blur the line so much.

That is a very important point. The gutless pandering by both parties is reaching critical mass. In fairness, however, I’m not so sure that Stewart didn’t make this point more effectively than any “journalist” I have seen. You might expect FOX to be blaring this out, but I think FOX must have taken the position that it is just better to let this pass. Too much attention draws too much unfavorable attention to the Republicans who voted against it.

Precisely: the Democrats tooks the 2/3 procedure to avoid amendments that “might make them look bad” this election cycle. In the meantime these heroes are literally, literally, dying. Lesser of two evils perhaps, but the majority of this country didn’t vote them into office to be cowardly.

I know, I know, they have passed an amazing amount of beneficial laws since Obama was elected. But it’s the cave-ins like this that reinforce the idea that they’re cowards barely above the tea bag embracing Republicans.

Anthony Weiner was NOWHERE on this bill; all the heavy lifting was done by Carolyn Maloney and Jerry Nadler. And his House floor theatrics and subsequent media appearances were ENTIRELY about trying to put Republicans in a bad light. If there’s SHAME here, it belongs to Anthony Weiner — he’s an arrogant, self-aggrandizing MORON!

He voted for it. He may not have been instrumental in its legislation – most bills aren’t touched by the majority of Congress. That doesn’t detract from any of his rightfully impassioned statements.

Hey Little John-Boy, did you know there were 255 votes to pass the bill on a straight majority – until Pelosi changed it to 2/3 requirement?

…and Little John-Boy, do you know why she changed it?

Heck yeah. The Republicans don’t have enough votes to stop anything unless Pelosi lets them…but you’re not gonna get lots of these folks to see any of that, or admit it even if they do.

Why Jon Stewart is the only trustworthy person in all of “news”.

You know Jon, if you feel that strongly about it, you could donate your salary to help them. Unless, of course, you’re some kind of hypocritical “asshole”.

Or just rail against the true assholes who could make a real difference but refuse to because their corporate overlord masters make them vote against causes like this in favor of corporate greed…..

You can always tell when someone is lying. When anyone says the republicans block everything.
FACT, the REPUBLICANS don’t have the votes to block ANYTHING in the House.
This whole story is based on a LIE. Stewart is lying. Colby is lying. Save us the FAKE outrage.

What is Jon lying about? He slammed both sides, and he’s absolutely right. First, there shouldn’t be 150 or so people voting against it. That alone is horrific, and shows a lack of respect for people that died and are suffering because they believed in America. They believed in bravery. And because they want to protect foreign interests, they are willing to give up on Americans. And that is something that should be shown to Americans.

That being said, the Dems either have no balls or they are assholes. And they are both. I don’t understand how the amendments thing works, but I assume you have to vote on them, and I have to assume that you would debate and yes, slow down the passage of the bill, but at least the bill passes. See, both parties should go fuck themselves. The only one here that I respect is Peter King. He was a rare republican that voted for the right thing. I just wish he could have admonished his Republican brethren for committing an utter act of pure evil. Money over saving lives. I say vote them all out of office and let’s put people in here that put actual Americans (and don’t call the tea party bullshit either) ahead of politics and money. Neither side will do that.

Now, for the commenters here, you should be ashamed of yourselves. You are so buried in politics and sides that you fail to recognize that both parties are 100% in the wrong here. And no one is more wrong that another, and you shouldn’t be defending either side, you should be defending Americans. Both parties are ruining this country.

  • Azarkhan

“Republican brethren for committing an utter act of pure evil.” Permatiltx

You’re right. What the Republicans did makes the murder of 40 million by Stalin or the holocaust by the Nazis pale in comparison.

I’m sorry, I forgot to put together levels of evil. So, since it wasn’t up to Stalin or Hitler levels of evil, that means it wasn’t evil. I’ll make sure to correct that, so let’s say, an utter act of mild evil. A heartless act of average evil. Or committing an act of evil that’s about a 2 on the evil scale. Okay, how about for committing a disgusting act of greed and political bias as opposed to extending a helping hand to those who risked their lives to help other Americans and truly showed what makes this country so great. Money overshadows humanity. (I contend that an act of evil and there are others who think so since Money is the root of all evil and the such.) There. Does that satisfy the evil scale? Or was that just a distraction so that you don’t have to come face to face with the fact that those 150 or so Republicans (members of your side) are in fact awful, awful human beings.

  • Azarkhan

“Or committing an act of evil that’s about a 2 on the evil scale”

That’s much better! I so hate hyperbole, don’t you?

You know, sometimes I just wonder if the GOP cares at all about ANYTHING except corporate interests.

How is it a lie Gordon?

He called him an asshole for the reason they gave for the nay votes…… how could be possibly be lying about that?

The story is about Republican assholes and Democrat pussies afraid of November. Once again where is the lie?

  • Socrates69

Jackie there is no lie, and I suspect that Gordo didn’t even watch the clip, just read the highlights from Fox news. Stewart hit it on the nose, both parties are simply doing what they can to prepare for the coming elections rather than whats right.

  • adel

    Jackie,

I have long admired your drawing skills, your film producing skills, your interior design skills, and your party planning skills… Who knew your reasoning skills were also above par? Cheers

  • http://gordonbloyershow.com gordonbloyershow

Read my LIPS. The WHOLE story is based on the lie that Republicans blocked the bill. The story is based on fake outrage by Stewart and Colby. The bill could have been passed with 218 votes. Any outrage based on failure to get 2/3 vote is a joke. All outrage should be aimed at DEMOCRATS. If Colby and Stewart were anything but left-wing zealots they would use their outrage on them.

The Colby lie is below, “and rightly so”. No it is NOT rightly so.

for which the 9/11 first responders bill appears to transcend traditional political rhetoric. And rightly so.

  • Socrates69

Um Gordo, no its not. Its based on the whole idea of the ineffectiveness of the legislature and its on politically motivated self-interest. Of both parties. I mean I could be wrong. But it seemed to me Stewarts left wing zealotry was directed at both parties?

  • Permatiltx

Yeah, Gordon, unfortunately you are way off based. Stewart didn’t say the Republicans blocked the bill. He said that the Dems took a pussy maneuver, and he blamed that 100% on Dems. All outrage shouldn’t be directed at the Democrats. It misses out on the assholes who voted nay which is a very high number if not a majority. And Peter King should admonish those guys as well as the Dems.

Gordon trying to be civil but are you illiterate? The first sentence in Colbys story……

“Last week the House of Representatives defeated a bill that aimed to provide over $7 billion in aid to first responders of the attacks on 9/11 who have been negatively effected by toxins in the air.”

Where in the entire story does it say Republicans blocked the bill? Matter of fact right there it says the House (not Republicans, not Democrats) but the House defeated the bill.

And in Stewart’s story nowhere did he blame the Republicans for blocking it. Once again he blasted a few Republicans for picking Corporations over 9/11 workers (not surprising, happens constantly) and Dems for using BS maneuvers and being flat out pussies (not surprising, happens constantly).

Now see this is why the entire world is skeptical of Americas Right Wing. Lies and innuendo abound from you guys……
