Olbermann: ‘Dick Cheney Admitted To War Crimes On National Television’

video

During an appearance with Jonathan Karl, temporary host of This Week, former Vice President Dick Cheney claimed “I was a big supporter for waterboarding…I was a big supporter of enhanced interrogation techniques.” If you believe water boarding to be a war crime, then Cheney just admitted to being a war criminal on national television. Which is essentially the claim made by Keith Olbermann on last night’s Countdown.

Olbermann aired the segment in which Cheney made these claims, then had on as his guest John Dean, author of Blind Ambition, and vocal critic of the Bush Administration. Dean spoke of the constitutionality of enhanced interrogation techniques, and knows a little about the US Constitution, seeing as he is a convicted felon as a result from actions surrounding Watergate. Dean served under President Richard Nixon.

Ironically, had anyone else made a similar screed railing against the former vice president, it would have deeper meaning and more news value. But since Olbermann consistently rails against his ideological and political opponents with such hyperbolic consistency, that its hard to separate serious accusations with polemical pandering.

It’s hardly news Cheney is a war criminal, and I wouldn’t credit Olbermann with some scoop or some analytical break-through. Cheney is at risk of arrest and trial if he enters Europe. The Italians and others have warrants and writs in hand. He is pretty much contained in America and in a few despotic corners of the world which welcome men such as he. It would be best if we could simply resolve to move beyond him. Addressing the issue head-on is painful and difficult, but more importantly a dangerous distraction. To be sure, it is difficult to ignore Cheney when he and the foul fruit of his loins try to jump into our living rooms every Sunday morning to spew their skunky brew of anti-Americanism, but ignore we should. Contain and ignore. He and his kind will soon wither.

I will betcha GW cringes everytime a Cheney hits the airwaves.

It is a damn shame a group of foreign agents can’t kidnap Cheney and take him out of the country to the Hague so he can be judged on his crimes.

Dick Cheney is exactly the reason why we never signed for the Hague court. You know how embarrassing it would be for us to have to give away our former Vice President to a court for war crimes? We’re America. We’re a country with rule of law..,.,we’re at least supposed to be.

Good point, all (so far). BB: I am intrigued by your point. W is so desperate for rehabilitation. I have never seen an adult male still so craving for approval. Poor guy has some real baggage from his childhood and adolescence, I assume. Whatever, every time a member of the Cheney family intrudes into our living rooms and dens, W is denied the rehabilitation. No tears from me about that, but it is indeed fascinating.

    here’s the money quote:

I used to like Olbermann but somewhere along the line he lost his gravitas. Now he’s just another left-wing shill.

RRK no tears from me either. Having worked in the drug and alcohol field for many years the “dry drunk” charge many use to describe W is very appropriate. If one is familiar with the description there is no mistaking it in his behavior. Personally I believe he was in Chaney’s pocket for his first term. After allowing Cheney to get him into so much trouble he decided to try and do the next four years on his own. The first thing a drunk has to do is work on their EGO. As one can see Bushie never did that. He is still a spoiled little boy who never grew up and refuses to take any responsibility for his behavior. That is the second thing a recovering drunk has to do. Some drunks use religion to not drink and it does work for them but it does not help them as far as working on their issues as well as AA does. If you watch the commercial Bush does with Clinton for Haiti you can see in his behavior how insecure he is.

What scares me is that he was elected twice. OMG and I will get a ton of nasty feedback here I am sure but having lived in PA so close to Ohio and now in Florida let me tell you that it was obvious there was much dirty dealing in both elections. Now not to say that Dems don’t do their share of helping in elections but dems usually just push the envelope while republicans seal the envelope and mail it without a stamp.

Facebook user I agree with you. Olberman has totally gone of the rail with his behavior. I still watch him becase somehow he seems to have good information but his presentation of it is usually off the wall. Can’t help myself since I have watched him for years when he was in sports. Guess it is just a habit.

    That is so true.

Frankly, I was empathetic of and uncomfortable for W and for Clinton, and I was embarrassed for our nation when I saw that.

I doubt that, considering they were both right.

And spare us your “dimestore” drug/alcohol behavioral analysis, you don’t “know” sh%t.

I wouldn’t completely dismiss BB’s analysis, Tim Z. Ank. He seems to know a great deal about this phenomenon. Many Texans saw W falling down drunk many times, and as I recall, W was falling down drunk at a reception for HRH Elizabeth II at the White House during Poppy’s reign. Of course, there is the matter of the various DUI’s and DWI’s, as well. There is no question that W was a serious drinker, likely an alcoholic. I, for one, despite my manifold and profound policy disagreements with W, actually believe he dried out and stayed on the wagon for the most part. I have tremendous admiration for W because of that. The Charleston airport, Driskell Hotel and pretzel incidents, far from proving to me that W was hitting the sauce again, tended to establish the opposite. W had a great deal of discipline, but he lacked the wisdom to cast off his demons. He chose to live with them, a huge burden, causing mighty suffering. There is an important lesson in all of this, and W could do a tremendous service to millions of Americans if he were to ever be forthright about this.

In that same vein, it is pretty clear that not only W, but also Laura and the girls have a “problem” with alcohol. What a great case study on the genetic imperative in alcoholism were the Bush’s able to make themselves available. I have no criticism for them not wanting to air this problem even more out in the open than they have, but it would be a valuable service.

Every time I see obama on tv I think the exact same thing….He went from around 80% to what is he now, 42%?

  • blueblogger

Yes, you are right about his ratings but he is not the least bit insecure about it.

  • blueblogger

I would pay money to get into Cheney’s head just for a little while.

timzank feel free to skip my posts.

I am a big supporter for waterboarding…I am a big supporter of enhanced interrogation techniques.

According to Olby, I am now guilty of committing a war crime for stating that opinion. Are you cheney haters going to have me hauled off to the Hague?

  • ImNotBlue

…then had on as his guest John Dean, author of Blind Ambition, and vocal critic of the Bush Administration…

Wait, KO interviewed a critic of the Bush Administration? Really? WOW! That’s a real stretch for him, isn’t it?

But really… doesn’t he interview Dean like every other day?

Any of you other lefties want to talk about why an incursion by another country into the US would be a bad thing? No? I didn’t think so.

Go on, talk more about “anti-Americanism” from Cheney… the irony is laughable.

Poor guy has some real baggage from his childhood and adolescence, I assume.

Yes, Keith is one sick puppy.

    @ Ashley Graham

Whether you were pro- or anti- Iraq War or pro- or anti- torture, are you REALLY telling me you aren’t miffed that no-bid contracts went to companies that just happened to be part of Cheney’s investment holdings?

Even if you’re the most bloodthirsty Hawk on the block, as a taxpayer you should be *a little bit* angry that the tax money paying for this war (and the subsequent federal debt outside any possible revenue) is going to wasteful third-party war profiteers. As a patriot, you should be downright *pissed* that money is going to mercenaries unbound to uphold the Constitution instead of directly supporting the soldiers and veterans who have proudly served this country.

“I would pay money to get into Cheney’s head just for a little while.”

    Amen to that.

  • pyrope

I usually try to avoid remarks like this but I am convinced that Mr. Olbermann is as full of crap as a Christmas goose.

  • J Baustian

In breaking news, Keith Olbermann opened his mouth and a series of idiotic words came out. Also, the sun rose in the east.
