Meet The Press Gets Worst Ratings In 18 Years

ratings

Meet The Press remained the top Sunday morning public affairs show last week, as usual.

But it was the lowest total viewer average for the NBC program since July 5, 1992. And the rest of the Sunday shows are coming close to its number one spot.

NBC average 2,420,000 total viewers, followed by CBS’ Face The Nation at #2 with 2,280,000, ABC’s This Week with 1,950,000. and FOX News Sunday with 980,000.

In the A25-54 demographic, NBC had 770,000, ABC was #2 with 620,000, CBS had 610,000 and FOX 380,000

David Gregory‘s Meet The Press has remained largely the top Sunday show as it has been for years. But there have been periodic victories by other programs who took the lead certain weeks. If 18-year lows continue, it could open the door for another show, whether ABC or CBS, to take the lead.

> Update: While the ratings tightened up last week, for most of September MTP held a comfortable lead over the competition, up more than 700,000 total viewers.

Why do you think that is? You libs continue to churn out propaganda disguised as news and you’re still surprised at these ratings? People do not want to watch what amounts to government controlled media and our media has seemingly given up even trying to hide it. That’s why people are turning them off.

  • m

I don’t think David Gregory was the best pick to replace Russert. Yes, he got it due to seniority – but NBC had better options available.

  • Big Eddie

Time to bring back Lawrence Spivak .

I’ve watched the show for decades and stopped watching MTP. The roundtable is too left-leaning, includes nutty folks like Maddow (I think that was the last straw for me), and Russert was just so tough but fair, so the current version just doesn’t have that mix anymore. Sunday morning is like late night, it’s a habit, and once it changes, hard to get the viewers to come back.

That doesn’t explain why Fox News Sunday got half the audience of MTP.
Shouldn’t they be going up if people are craving fair and balanced (lol) media?
IMO it’s a combination of football season, more choices out there (cable/internet), and David Gregory being a weak host.

Rush – the reason that MTP is sinking is 1) nobody cares and 2) people get their news from the internets. If you want cheap entertainment, tune in Fox “News.” Apparently you like so many other nit-wits enjoy a little bullshit with your Mountain Dew.

David Gregory is a perfect example of the “Peter Principle”. Every man is promoted to his level of incompetence.

I’ve been thinking who should have this job. Somebody that NBC would actually consider:
    Let’s see, maybe …….. or …….., no ….. how about ……..
Wow, this is hard! Reality is the show will probably just continue to sink until Comcast takes over.
    Thank God for Christiane Amanpour!

Big_F-ing_Deal and Ted have it surrounded – more choices, more people getting news and analysis online, and a weak, weak host. I really miss Tim Russert, big time. I would add to that, more horse-race and fewer issues, and people are tired of horse-race. Amanpour will take the lead in the next six months, despite the right-wing hystericals trying to convince everyone that she’s on the Hezbollah payroll, if for no other reason than the fact that she’s talking more about issues than horse races.

This is actually a good point. MTP was preempted a couple times recently for tennis or some other bullshit. When you send the people away sometimes it’s hard to get them back.

  • Jelperman

Why should anyone care about the ratings for these Sunday morning shows? Or news, for that matter? They were never meant to be cash cows for ad money in the first place.

  • felixw

This show has never recovered from the loss of Tim Russert. Russert might have been the last major Democrat in TV news who put journalistic integrity above political advocacy. The folks at CNN, MSNBC, CBS and NBC should pull out old videotapes of Russert to see how it’s done.

Then why were you guys always whining about what a shill he was?
You like him now that he’s dead, huh?

That’s cuz David Gregory sucks and is a hack.

Russert never got a lot of flak that I remember because he really was fair, he asked tough questions of everyone, not just the conservatives. Even I liked him!

  • TfT

I agree Russert was fair on his Sunday show. Even though he perjured himself on the stand in the LIbby trial, he was a good journalist.

David on the other hand is a democrat hack who puts his loyalty to democrats above his loyalty to his profession. It is only a matter of time before he falls. I’m surprised ABC has retained second place with Christianne, her of ultra-liberal fame, and if CBS would replace Bob with a more balanced personality they might be able to take over first place. Fox News Sunday doesn’t have a chance…it is a lost show. Chris Wallace is OK, but Fox Broadcast doesn’t have an audience that watches news shows. Now if Fox Broadcast would simulcast Bret’s show at 6pm it would compete with the perkey one, the bower, and the over-the-top serious one. But alas, Fox Broadcast doesn’t try that.

Sunday News Shows are a dying breed…..

  • TfT

In fact, CBS should go after Tapper to replace Bob since ABC threw him under the bus. He would up their ratings.

Ted, make sure your diaper is fresh before you take your meds.

As for ‘Beat the Breast’, what do you expect? More of the same tired political talking points are vomited every weekend, and by then, who cares? David Gregory makes a fine verbal undertaker for such an uninspired and irrelevant offering.

  • The Real Royal King

As good a reporter as Gregory was, he is as equally bad as MTP moderator. The show was always about the guests and the issues. But, Gregory has turned it into a Limbaughesque production about very little other than himself.Mainstream Americans, moderate, progressive and liberal Americans don’t have the same need the rightists do to live vicariously, to be told what to think and to feel. we need to recover than mainstream American on MTP. If Gregoru still wants to do a show about himself, send him over to FOX “News”. He should do very well there.

As is often the case, you have a handle on all of this. I know MTP is not a cable “news” show, but the broad genre of news and commentary on broadcast and cable is undergoing a tremendous transformation. We’re likely to end up with HLN type news on the broadcast channels and cable “news” will likely disappear in the next decade.

If that were the case, people would have given up watching Fox during the Bush years.

Everything that liberalism touches gets ruined over time. It takes a lot of money and resources to keep things propped up when infested by liberalism. Whether it’s a city, neighborhood, a country, a network, etc, everything gets ruined.

Liberalism (really Modern Liberalism/Progressivism) is unsustainable.

Of course you ignore the other two airings for of FNS that happen on the cable channel later in the same day. Those ratings are not added to the total. .

Are you saying you respected Mr. Russert? I did. I thought he was basically a fair man and didn’t do hatchet job interviews…at least from all I saw.

Yes, sure. Because liveral cities such as Seattle, Sante Fe and Denver are such cesspools, right?

    Totally “ruined” by liberals!

    Fuck you.

Go take a drive around Dallas’ Westmoreland Hampton or Singleton neighborhoods and tell me Republicans are any better than Democrat mayors.

Mayor Tom Leppert is no better than any Democrat.

Republicans ruined the entire country under Bush.
