Robert Gibbs: The Poor Economy Isn’t Hurting Rich People

video

During today’s White House press conference, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs faced questions about President Obama’s plans to amend the current tax code in light of a a struggling or stagnant economy. ABC’s Jake Tapper asked specifically about ending the Bush tax cuts. After hemming about the spending habits of individuals who make $250,000, Gibbs summed up by saying “this economy isn’t hurting people who are making $800,000 a year, this economy’s hurting families who are making $40,000 a year.

Now the debate will turn to whether this administration is waging class warfare or just being brutally honest. Either way, it appears that the White House has identified the battleground for the coming midterms, and that is the dwindling state of the middle class.

    What an embarrassment Gibbs is.

Actually, the asset deflation in the first phase of this downturn — the decline in real estate values, share prices, bond values, hard assets etc. — was much more pronounced than the income decline. As a result, the wealthy took a much bigger hit percentage-wise during 2008 than a typical wage-earner. That’s why the second stage of the decline, starting in late 2008, was marked by heavy unemployment — since the people and businesses who got their balance sheets destroyed in phase one are the people who do the hiring and investing. The wealthy got hit first, and the pain worked its way down the economy.

For the Obama administration to think that they can fix the economy for people making under a certain threshold, while taking punitive measures against those making more than that arbitrary amount is pure fantasy, with no basis in economic fact. Until the people who do the hiring see their situation stabilize, there simply won’t be any meaningful job creation.

Of course, anyone looking to the Obama administration for economic analysis of any sort is in trouble from the outset.

People who make 40K a year don’t hire people. Gibbs is an idiot, and that is his right to be an idiot.

  • timzank

Liberals think that once you have “wealth” it simply perpetuates itself. Like if you made $800k you’ll always make $800k and your assets will never plummet, and your investments will always grow. They are fucking idiots. Poor people don’t open a factory or a chain of retail outlets.

The only possible eventual outcome using their strategy is for EVERYONE to be poor. They think the government can just print more dollar bills, pass them around and somehow we all make a decent living.

    Fucking idiots.

More Liberty is 100% correct! I say, “The hell you say, Mr. Gibbs!” Every year I buy my daughters the latest model-year Bentleys. Now how can I look them in their lovely faces and tell them they’ll only get Mercedes this year?! For shame, Mr. Gibbs! All you lowlifes hard-working Real Americans had better re-double your efforts to get me more tax cuts, otherwise I’ll be limited in the amount of jobs I can create (in India — sorry, but keep on believing!).

  • TruthLovinFreedomLover

Forget the “lowlifes” and “India” parts above. They were typos. Just know that the couple hundred people who make up my economic class will keep your small business afloat with our patronage.

I can’t wait for November and hopefully the Republicans will take the house and the purse strings.

They can take the check book away from the administration.

Of course Obama will feel obligated to not run anything thru congress but let the Departments just change the rules.

Then in two years…Obama willbe out…and they can change the rules back and start a real recovery!

Your well pointed jab at the “rich” is old and tired. You do realize that the top 10% of wage earners in the U.S. already pay over 70% of the taxes, don ‘t you?

To guys like truth it matters not, they honestly believe there is some “endless stream” of rich guys to tax. What are we going to do truthlover when there are no more rich people????????

Seriously, where do we turn for revenue when the rich folks are all living elsewhere?

  • TruthLovinFreedomLover

I seriously am in the top 1%. And I keep hiring Indians to do your jobs for less, while importing junk from China so you can feel like you’re living the life of luxury. And my accountant makes sure I pay less taxes than just about everyone under me. So please, keep hoping I’ll throw you bone and voting for MY best interest. It’s what my and mine count on!

They’re progressives and as such they have to continually justify stealing from the upper-class and giving to the other classes. Essentiall half the people in this country pay taxes and the other half don’t. We’ve officially reached the point where the majority steals from a minority through out tax system. We also allow the government to kill people on our behalf over-seas thus creating the war on terror. We then use that war on terror to excuse the abuse of civil liberties here at home. Our President can now assassinate Americans. We are failing because we’re now morally bankrupt as a result of not following the simple principles of small government and liberty. This failure resides in both parties.

  • am_underground

Gibbs, you just can’t be that dumb, didn’t you give them trillions in bailouts? Also, Obama and the rest of his Washington posse have had just how many vacations and at what cost to the American Taxpayer? How about Mrs O, didn’t Spain cost us about $350,000. No, the rich are not hurting, that includes you.

Results of liberalism can be found in the song “The Trees” by the rock group Rush
    Written by Neil Peart

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

    There’s trouble with the maples,
And they’re quite convinced they’re right
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can’t help their feelings
If they like the way they’re made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can’t be happy in their shade.

There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
    As the maples scream “Oppression!”
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
    And demanded equal rights.
    “The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light.”
Now there’s no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
    By hatchet, axe, and saw.

Moron. The top 1% of wage earners pay 30% of all taxes.

Another lie. Like I said, the top 1% of wage earners pay 30% of all taxes. The top 5% of wage earners pay over half of all taxes. The top 50% of wage earners pay 96% of all taxes.

Then you are breaking the law – well, you would be if you really were in the top 1%, which, of course, you are not.

The company I work for imports mechanical components from BOTH India and China. The quality is actually pretty good, we’ve done a good job of setting up a good QC system overseas – you should try it – well, you could if you actually did hire Indians and import from China. In reality, you are probably a college professor. Funny, your liberal Dem buddies also support free trade, even the current abomination of a President. He wants to take everyone’s money (or borrow and print it) and then “spread it around” as he sees fit. He doesn’t give a frog’s fat ass where it comes from.

  • Pablo

Uh, Gibbsy, you’d better check that with Barack. This economy is kicking his ass.

  • ChrisNH

What a wee-todd Gibbsy is. Maybe the weak economy isn’t hurting the ‘rich’ like John Kerry and his yacht, or John Edwards and his multiple mansions. Or George Soros. No, ‘those’ rich are doing quite fine. It’s everyone else that’s hurting. Key word: ‘everyone.’ What brilliant point was Gibbsy trying to make, anyway?

They’re being honest. Chances are, if you’re making 250k or more, the nuances of the market won’t drag you down. It might hurt your pocket a bit in the range of 10-20k, but you’re not going to be living hand to mouth anytime soon. If your taxes are raised by 3%, you shouldn’t feel it unless you’re living way beyond your means.

This has always been true in a recession. The check-to-check and middle class are the ones that take the hit, not those of us lucky enough to earn more each year than they can hope to in five or six.

  • NORBIT

Hedge Funds, Big Bank & Private Equity gave THREE-to-ONE to OBAMA in 2008! – and they got the GET FAT & RICH “Financial REFORM” LIE Passed!!

    BIG UNION WON!!

Extending the Bush tax cuts for the super wealthy, will be an extension of the recession, that extra money will only add to their present stock pile of happy money they use for trickle down economics to their children and other heirs. This takes money out of the circulation, hurting the economy, slowing it down further.
To put money back into the economy, we need to engage in trickle up economics. That is where we pay money to the producing middle class through production, sales, service and consumption. No one is talking about trickle up economics, maybe because it is too simple for people to think it works.
We know trickle down economics goes to children and heirs of the super rich and they probably blow it on, easy come, easy go living. The trickle up economics goes to hard working people, who in return spend it to sustain a life style common to the American way of living. Let us keep it that way.

Gee, I wonder how much Gibbs is earning, what is his tax bracket? Look, I don’t know about you but I’m not rich, I’m not poor either (we planned ahead like MOST americans); however, I do not envy a millionaire who worked hard for his money & keeps people employed, to punish them just because they are rich is wrong…it is the american dream to get ahead & if you take away that impetus, what is left of our society? All of these wealthy men formed huge companies whose products we use EVERY day & the banks should not have been penalized since, if they cannot make a profit, what will we get for our savings? Obama has it wrong & I can’t wait until the fall, when not only the leaves will drop but so will the democrats, or should I call them demo…rats, they have betrayed our trust, those poor people who live in the border states, no help!…bums, that make baby after baby..to get a bigger welfare check.. half of them do not even remember what kid came from what father & you know this is true. Obama wants to fulfill his promise to the people who voted him in like, …Mickey Mouse…deceased people…babies..drug addicts..those that were paid or transported to vote…they were living on the streets, tsk tsk. why? there are places for the homeless but….no drugs! God help us, I fear for our America, once great and now…slipping into just a memory!

The bad economy isn’t hurting rich people? HA!

I’ll tell you how bad it is, my wife had to dismiss two of her maids, one of our gardeners, and our weekend chaffeur. The yacht crew has been put on notice as has our weekend chef. We have taken to making our own bed and preparing our own breakfast. If you can imagine such a thing, I saw my wife actually reading a cookbook last evening! Our hostler’s employment is being cut to 20 hours per week. The butler has been let go and one of the maids is taking over his duties (she’s happy to have the hours). Things are getting so bad for us that I am even thinking about making my personal valet redundant.

OK, so I’m joking, but the point is that poor people do NOT make jobs for others.
