Could Get Ugly: Rolling Stone Says Army Deployed ‘PsyOps’ To Influence Senators

In a story breaking overnight that’s sure to explode on cable news through the day, a report in Rolling Stone suggests the U.S. Army deployed a a specialized “psychological operations” team to target Senators in the hopes of boosting funding for the war in Afghanistan. The effort also aimed to increase troop levels, according to the magazine.

The magazine reports the operation was ordered by three-star general Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, who’s in charge of training forces for duty in Afghanistan. An officer who objected to the program tells Rolling Stone he was “harshly reprimanded” for resisting:

“My job in psyops is to play with people’s heads, to get the enemy to behave the way we want them to behave,” the officer, Lt. Colonel Michael Holmes, told Rolling Stone.

“I’m prohibited from doing that to our own people. When you ask me to try to use these skills on senators and congressman, you’re crossing a line,” he added.

Among those targeted were senators John McCain, Joe Lieberman, Jack Reed, Al Franken and Carl Levin, as well as Representative Steve Israel of the House Appropriations Committee, the magazine said.

Looks like it worked with Liebermann and McCain.

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

Well I’m sure George Clooney and the New Earth Army did their best.

What did Obama know – and when did he know it?

    - and don’t conclude “Nothing” and “Never”, because that only gets him off the hook on the economy! – lol

  • Judge Mental

Since Bush and his administration were blamed for what happened at Abu Ghraib, then surely Obama & Co. will be deemed equally culpable here.

Horseshit story from a liberal puke who has it in for the military. I’m not crazy about the war, but this whole bullshit article is disingenuous at best.

  • The Lantern of Truth

Forget all this Libya stuff , unions and gas prices . It ‘s party time at the White House and King Barry is in charge of cups and ice .

I call Bullsh*t. No one needed to convince McCain or Lieberman of anything and no one COULD convince Franken or Levin of anything- since they’re the world’s greatest authorities on every subject.

Who is the author of this piece- a Bradley Manning/Major Hassan wannabe?

    Okay…..

So, from what I’m gathering from this MSNBC article, a psy-ops group was asked for information on senators. They provided same, including voting records, maybe a profile. Basically, they provided insight on the senators. The general then used that to deal with the senators.

How is that any different than any other tactical meeting of every business, politician, and even you, right down to a parent teacher conference? You gather information and use it to your advantage.

The headline makes it sound like they had operatives contacting the senators, lurking in the shadows hissing, “Hey, bud, over here….” They didn’t tap phones or follow anyone around, or take pictures of them in bed with their secretary (or in Franken’s case, his goat).

The term “psy-ops” conjures up dark images and I suspect that this is EXACTLY what Rolling Stone, that paragon of journalistic integrity and fairness, had in mind.

I could be wrong, but I think, basedon the MSNBC article, that this is much ado about little. Misuse of an army unit? Probably. The Pentagon Papers? Nah.

Not that that will stop the left from running with it like a stolen purse.

And you know this writer is liberal how? And you know the article is BS how? Reading a three sentence blurp out of a whole story and calling it disingenuous doesn’t make it so.

I’m not saying it’s true or not but writing it off to either side’s politics is ridiculous.

    uh….huh

I think Jim is giving some of these people a little too much credit. Judging by the statements the CIA officials gave to congress I wouldn’t say it’s all that difficult to pull the wool over the eyes of even our top officials. And as far as congressmen go, just look at the horrible information they were given to go to war in the first place. They may have thought it was correct and accurate but it was wrong nonetheless.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

  • Jackie_Treehorn

So the military has lobbyists? Willing to bet Halliburtons and Bank of Americas are better….

It’s a journalistic piece not written by Fox News, The NY Post, Newsmax or The Daily therefore its liberal garbage….

The same way I know when Dail Kos or Huffpo publishes an article it will be from a liberal. Are you retarded? It’s Rolling Freaking Stone.

  • Mr.Papshmer

It’s called “lobbying”, and it’s a nothing story.

Oh, by the way, if any of you leftists get your panties all wound up, how many of you are cheering the contempt of the Wisconsin democratic process by the Democrat senators? Or the illegal walk out of the teachers, more public employees, to influence politics?

    Nice.

  • BatBoy

Wouldn’t it have been easier if they at just taken Franken and Levin down to Guantanamo and locked them up for a couple of months and worked on them down there?

No one would have missed them!

  • Harry Flashman

    Another thought….

If this general wanted psy-ops to gain an advantage overv those senators why did he even waste his time on the army unit? They’re pikers.

He could have asked the Obama Administration for advice. They’re masters at deception and making people believe them instead of their lying eyes.

    Now, THAT’S a real psy-ops unit.

  • writer

They should call in the elite gNOpig unit.

Guess we can just call them Fox News then

  • Nachi

Who could seriously doubt such to be accurate? Just another action of inept, delusional, alcoholic actions by BushDrunk & Repug Gang. A “legacy” of disaster & ruin that is soaked to the bone – in blood.

  • Annie Oakley

According to a report this evening, the “source” for this story is a Lt. Col. in the Texas National Guard who has had some disciplinary issues surrounding a relationship with a woman (don’t know if its a female soldier) and about drinking on duty. He alleges that the disciplinary actions were taken because he exposed the “psy ops.” However, since the story came out TODAY and I assume the disciplinary actions were taken previously, his “victim” pose makes no sense. I am sceptical of this source from the get go since he’s a parttime soldier and his story of being scapegoated makes no sense timewise.

  • Dem4Ever

When this story is exposed as the haox that it is, Rolling Stone Magazine and Mediaite are going to have enough egg on their colletive faces to make an omlet big enough to feed the army they have defamed.

  • TfT

Doing your homework and being prepared is now PSYOP in the minds of the liberal elite lamesream media? It is no wonder they don’t ever report anything factually anymore….they won’t do homework or get prepared before reporting something.

Geeze…get a life, get a grip……some anony soldier makes this statement and RS runs with it. Uh huh…sure, I believe it. Oh and btw, the Times has NO journalism chops anymore, they are nothing but a propaganda machine for the liberal left, Pinch and Keller have killed the paper.

  • njoy-d-ride

Naah. I think Rolling Stone rolled over the edge on this one.

  • Alz

I’ll bet the Psych Ops team get some really strange results when they tried it on liberals.
