Active Volcano In Iceland Puts European Travel In Worst State Since 9/11

Today’s top story on Countdown wasn’t about the Tea Party movement or a new Obama administration policy– it was about Iceland. Lawrence O’Donnell, filling in for Keith Olbermann today, narrated the story of Eyjafjallajokull, an active volcano in the country that has caused London’s Heathrow to descend to a level of disarray it hasn’t seen since 9/11.Dawna Friesen reported to the program from London Heathrow, where there is not much hope for continued flights tomorrow as the ash cloud covered most of Iceland and is traveling in the direction of the UK (and directly in the middle of the path of most transatlantic flights). The good news came from O’Donnell’s guest, Bill Burton of the US Geological Survey, who described the effect on the global geological climate as “slight.”

The impressive footage of the volcano (embellished with the classy chyron “Euro Ash”) below:

where there is not much hope for continued flights tomorrow as the ash cloud covers most of Iceland.

Oddly enough, the ash cloud is not covering most of Iceland, since the winds are dragging everything towards Britain, Scandinavia, and now continental Europe… call it Iceland’s little unintended love letter to those countries that are asking Iceland’s citizens to pony up for the savings that were lost in their banks…

Duly noted! Though at the time of this clip it does say that it’s still up there but on its way down to visit England.

I think Rick Sanchez (CNN) did a much more noteworthy report:

SANCHEZ: I was just asking Chad, how can you get a volcano in Iceland? [Myers laughs]. Isn’t it too- when you think of a volcano, you think of Hawaii and long words like that. You don’t think of Iceland.

    MYERS: Right.

SANCHEZ: You think it’s too cold to have a volcano there. But no! There it is.

    MYERS: Look at that.

    SANCHEZ: What is this? Explain-

I read that Gary Tuchman is on his way to Iceland. Gary has to be the hardest working journalist at CNN or anywhere else for that matter! I am sure his reports will be excellent as always.

I was wondering this news only.As every year volcanoes release more than 130 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere so what effect is held on global warming? I was having question which get solved by viewing this video. Thanks for sharing this information within us.

No kidding, I was going there on vacation in a few weeks. Now if I wait a few months I’ll probably get a great deal on hotels.

Is it any wonder then that because of the billowing plumes of ash coming from the Eyjafjallajokull glacier near Reykjavík, Iceland, hundreds of thousands of passengers now find themselves ‘fortunately’ grounded? http://just-me-in-t.blogspot.com/2010/04/under-proverbial-cloud.html

I have been re-routed into Europe via Spain, thence a train to England, and moved up a day to ensure this will happen. I spent the better part of five (5) hours dealing with this yesterday. No complaint, however. The aviation authorities are being remarkably wise, and the airlines are actually doing a great job working around all of this.

As long as the volcano pays for its carbon footprint, all will be well.

Was that a volcano or KO?
