After Quakes In Japan, Chile And NZ, Expert Says California Could Be Next: ‘It’s Inevitable’

Simon Winchester, an author and expert on earthquakes, made a disturbing connection between the epic earthquake and tsunami in Japan and recent devastating quakes in New Zealand and Chile, saying the three events were in three corners of a square in the Pacific some call the “Ring of Fire.” The fourth corner is California and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Winchester told TODAY‘s Meredith Vieira a massive event along the San Andreas Fault in California is “inevitable.”

“It’s becoming abundantly clear that these major earthquakes…tend to occur in clusters,” Winchester said. “A cluster seems to have happened in the last year in the Pacific plate.” Winchester said the even more concerning than a quake along the San Andreas Fault would be an earthquake along the Cascadia Fault, which is underwater along Northern California, Oregon and Washington. A quake there could trigger a tsunami.

True but time with regards to the earth is very relative. A short amount of time for a planet that is about 4 billion years old could be thousands of years.

  • Mr.Papshmer

Sensationalism to get his mug on TV. The California earthquakes are shallow, and not the mega-thrust type quake as in the other three. He’s right about the Cascadia fault, but that’s a separate plate not associated with the San Andreas fault. Predicting a mega-quake in Southern California is much more sensational than predicting one off the coast of Washington.

Well if there HAS to be another one, no better place than Cali. Let’s just hope it actually breaks the state off of the shelf and floats it out to sea along with all it’s debt. Moonbeam Island sounds nice.

Heh, since my son moved from Huntington Beach I couldn’t care less if the whole state breaks off and floats away.

    “Enjoy yourselves out there!”
    “It’s NOT you,,, it’s US”
“Don’t take it personally,,, this is a good break”
“DONT friend us on facebook,, dont tweet or text us,, just go find yourself”

My home is near Huntington Beach and sits on an aquifer, so I’m told I have liquifaction to look forward to. It’s a single story wood frame so I’ll just keep a cordless sawzall under my bed and hack my way out. I was a little disconserted when I got a NUVI GPS for christmas and it told me that I was 8 feet below sea level in my driveway, Maybe I need a self inflating raft as well.

$10 says Al Gore is going to drop the Global Warming and make a movie about the coming Earthquake to the West Coast.

Featured will be what American can do to save his beach house from crumbling.

NBC could change their motto to “Lean Forward and make it Quake Proof!”

Another $10 says there is going to be millions up millions of $$$$$$ Dollars $$$$$$ in grant requests to study West Coast Earth Quakes.

I’m amazed that Mediaite allows crap like this. It takes 2 seconds to ban and delete this stuff, but, for some reason they let it happen over and over.

@ Mr. Papshmer (I just cringed having to even type that)

Not just sensationalism: Shallow faults happen to cause more damage on the surface. Just ask anyone who lived in Oakland and Northridge for the last two huge quakes. My father’s high school buddy was killed in the collapsed section of the Bay Bridge. He really didn’t deserve to die just because he happened to live in California.
BTW- The quake in Japan was fairly close to the surface as earthquakes go and that is one of the factors for the amount of damaged prior to the tsumani.

@ The haters of California: what a terrible curse to place on a state. Does your zeal call for the destruction of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi which all fall on the New Madrid faultline? Should we celebrate the end of ‘redneck’ states?

  • TeaPartyPatriot

And, YES, the lunatic-left d-crat socialist eco-nuts are saying that the quake was caused by GloBull Warming.

  • eingriff

Just wait until the Yellowstone cauldron blows – third to a half of U.S. a total write-off.

AND when ALL the land, East, of the San Andres fault – Slides into the Atlantic – where will you be?

You’re using past experience as a guideline, when in fact we’ve never experienced a mega-thrust earthquake. You’re correct in normal earthquakes, the deep quakes that happen in the northwest don’t cause nearly the damage that the same magnitude quake does in California. The last large quake that we had a few years back was a 6.9 and caused virtually no damage. However, the 9.+ quake that’s predicted as a result of the Cascadia subduction zone snap would be far more devastating than any of the recent San Andreas disasters. Remember, the scale is not progressive, a 6.7 earthquake, same as the Northridge quake, is hundreds of times less powerful than a magnitude 9.0 earthquake.

That’s hilarious, man! There’s just not much funnier that people who do that. Yeah, you’re way better than other people, because you live in a bankrupt state. :)

    Yes, hilarious.

Because if California were left alone, to become an independent country, would rank as the world’s 8th LARGEST economy competing with what, is that Washington where you live? That hot bed of liberalism.

What are you doing there?! Move to Utah. No better yet, move to Arizona. They welcome people like you over there.

Los Angeles alone is recognized as one of the richest cities IN THE WORLD. Suck on that, mi amigo!

If you stick your finger into an inflated balloon and then release it, it has an effect on the balloon as a whole however slight. My point is that glaciers are melting and could be a factor in the magnitude of these earthquakes as vast amounts of weight get redistributed on the planet’s surface. What do the geologists think?
