CNN’s Stelter Addresses Plagiarism Controversy Surrounding Fareed Zakaria
On CNN’s Reliable Sources yesterday, Brian Stelter used a few minutes to address the accusations of plagiarism being leveled at fellow CNN host Fareed Zakaria. Stelter didn’t think all of the accusations made against Zakaria were fair (the anonymous writers investigating Zakaria have dug up multiple examples), but he did acknowledge something troubling in some of Zakaria’s work.
Stelter said, “My reporting has led me to believe that Zakaria’s program made some attribution mistakes. A small number, to be fair, but they’re the kinds of mistakes other journalists can learn from.”
He revealed that he tried to speak with Zakaria on-air about the allegations, but he turned him down. Stelter pointed to this as part of a bigger problem in TV news: a lot of the time, segments pop up that are inspired by a newspaper or online article and the hosts or anchors don’t give their sources proper credit.
