Dr. Drew Beats Maddow, Closes On Hannity Tuesday Night

Cable news ratings, June 20, 2011:

•Intensified interest in the murder trial of Casey Anthony has sent viewers swamping HLN, and the network’s newest show, Dr. Drew, has benefited greatly. After a slow start for the Drew Pinsky-hosted show, Dr. Drew finished in second place Tuesday among viewers 25-54, with 377,000. That pushed MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow into third place with 338,000 and CNN’s Piers Morgan into fourth place overall with 157,000. Fox’s Sean Hannity won the hour with 434,000 viewers in the demo.

•Huge ratings for HLN seems to be hurting sister network CNN, where three of its key evening shows, Situation Room (6 p.m.), John King, USA, and In the Arena each failed to attract 100,000 viewers 25-54. Those unusually low numbers were not helped by the absence of both 7 p.m. host John King and 8 p.m. host Eliot Spitzer, both off this week.

Dr. Drew was good on Red Eye. I wonder if he will ever return to the show?

I thought the bongo playing beatnik routine would expand Maddow’s audience. Certainly her emphasis on propaganda hasn’t been working — she has lost half of her audience since 2008.

  • Judge Mental

Good for Dr. Drew. Let’s see if he can keep the ratings after the Anthony trial is over.

  • Arkansas Steve

It’s obvious that much of our country is enamored with the Anthony trial. This, and this alone, has brought about severe ratings distortion which seem to dominate Mark’s life for a time.

Fortunately, after a couple weeks, things will return to our ‘crazy’ normal. I predict:

    1) Dr.. Drew’s program will continue with improved ratings. He really is pretty good & not everyone wants to watch politics 24/7.
    2) Spitzer will continue to bring up the rear, literally & figuratively.
    3) FOX programs, will increase their ratings domination.
    4) The evening news anchors at ABC, NBC, & CBS will be saying: What the hell happened? Where did all our viewers go?
    5) Keith Olberdork will not catch on. He will continue to say more & more outrageous things so the Mediaite writers will feel they ABSOLUTELY JUST HAVE to write everything he says.
    6) There will be several heated meetings in the Comcast boardroom. They will be discussing the absurdity of tolerating their Four Stooges, who continuously ignore relevance, deny the obvious, and generally spit in the faces of their viewers. Those meetings will necessarily be very ugly. In the end, Comcast will be too afraid to get rid of their stooges until after the 2012 presidential election.

Impressive numbers. I don’t think Hannity loses anything longer term, but MSNBC and CNN should be wary. Letterman consistently beat Leno until Leno had the big Hugh Grant interview. People tuned in for the short-term, but many kept watching….

  • Georgia999

Dr. Drew could use a little more polish on his program. He seems like he’s a wreck and doesn’t know how to cut a guest off…..so that’s exactly what he does; he just (slash) cuts them off. Hope he will improve as he goes on cause he does tend to babble on.
Also, he wastes a ton of time just saying “let me ask you this” probably 10 times a show.

  • X-3

Just had to stop by and check. Sure enough, Glenn Beck is STILL the owner of his time slot.
