its a complex question, should they be allowed to serve? i say yes. what about barracks, marriage and benefits, the military is a different culture than civilian life, and some dont seem to understand it. you cannot call in sick, its not a 9-5 job that you can just leave you problems at work, its a different lifestyle

There are gay men and women who are not old, overweight, or handicapped. There are gay people perfectly capable of serving this country, but can’t because of their orientation. There are gay people currently in the military, they just aren’t “out”. Overweight people can lose weight and join. Gay people can’t lose their sexuality. Handicapped people can’t join because they know they physically can’t handle the physicality the military requires, and they likely don’t want to given their condition. If a gay person is physically fit, and of proper age, in other words, if they are capable of serving their country in the way they want to, they should be able to.

There are men your age in the military, although they are now in positions of leadership. Men your age had opportunities to be in the military when they were younger. If they didn’t join then, well that’s their own fault. Gay people are gay all the time. They don’t have any opportunity to join the military because of their sexuality, unless they stay in the closet. For a lot of gay people, being in the closet is essentially lying to themselves and to others and it is painful for them. It’s not as if admitting being gay means they will automatically become sexually aggressive and start touching their fellow soldiers.

I don’t know if this scores him political points for his constituency, or if he is truly in his heart homophobic. I do know that an ex-military man should have the sense of acknowledging and properly interpreting the data and feedback he’s getting from those that still or have recently served.

All that said, there’s also the issue of basic human rights and common sense.
