Mediaite’s Live Blog Of The 2009 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

91622_detail_1If you’re up early this Thanksgiving morning, rinsing the brining liquid from your big raw bird or planning out the stove cycle, you’d do well to flip on the TV and catch the endless procession that is the 83rd annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The live appearances and mobile performances are ripe with opportunity for flubs and falls and you can follow all of the action along with Mediaite.

This year finds the parade taking a new path around Manhattan, skipping Broadway in favor of a route down Columbus Circle and Seventh Avenue, from 77th street down to Macy’s flagship store on 34th street. A miracle indeed!

This year’s parade includes: “1,500 dancers, cheerleaders, singers and performers; 15 giant character balloons; 800 clowns; 35 novelty or ornament balloons, balloonheads and balloonicles; 24 floats; 10 marching bands; and a slew of celebrity performers.”

And! Muppets from Sesame Street, the cast of various Broadway musicals, Miss America 2009, Katharine McPhee, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots and many, many more.

Ya know, I remember when this was really a parade! Not a musical floor show. It was all about school bands, military bands, clowns, majorettes, cowboys/girls on horses, old cars, fire engines, police on horses, kids, floats and ballons. And the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was THE BEST for floats and ballons. The parade kept moving and it was one fantastic thing after another. There was never a boring moment … there was always a dropped baton or a horse pooping. It was amazing to a kid! Not a musical floor show. Just think about the kids that are freezing while the parade is stopped for the elite that are sitting in those boxes all snug and warm watching the floor show.

The Seven Best (Or, Somewhat Memorable) Moments Of The Jay Leno Show

    video

After 95 episodes, the epic failure known as The Jay Leno Show airs its final episode tonight. Of course, Leno himself will be back after the Olympics, comfortably at 11:35pm all over again. Which was pretty much the problem to begin with - the 10pm offering started as a similar product to the Tonight Show, and only became more like the old format as time went on.

Stephen Colbert: ‘Sarah Palin is a F***king Retard’

The usually reliable Keith Olbermann's inability to nail Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin on Limbaugh's use of the term "retard" has been pretty frustrating. Sure, he has posited Palin as a hypocrite, but several times he has repeated Rush's and Palin's dueling assertions that he was "quoting" Rahm Emanuel, or that he was being "satirical," without really challenging it. Luckily, Stephen Colbert actually knows what the word "satire" means, and deployed a pile of it on Palin and Rush last night.
