Michele Bachmann Cites Hometown Hero John Wayne (While Actually In The Hometown Of John Wayne Gacy)

Video

Michele Bachmann has begun her presidential campaign with a bang. Speaking in front of her old home, Bachmann told Fox News that she hopes to channel the spirit of a famous Iowan – Waterloo’s own native son, John Wayne.

The problem is that John Wayne, the famous actor, was actually from lovely Winterset, Iowa. Waterloo, meanwhile, is located quite far from Winterset – about three hours by car – and has the distinction of having been home to John Wayne Gacy. Gacy, as you might know, was a serial killer who dressed up as a clown for children’s events and is responsible for raping and murdering at least 33 young boys throughout the 1970s.

Let’s be clear: Bachmann is not trying to channel a rapist clown. She’s channeling the other, nobler John Wayne, the stuff of American myth and Hollywood dreams. Not the one who inspired the creepiest Sufjan Stevens song ever. But, still: Eek.

    Never?

“Hometown” is also considered the place of one’s principal residence. Gacy lived in Waterloo for approx. 4 years, This was in his formative 20′s. He began his blight on humanity in Waterloo.

Jon Stewart, Maher, and the rest of late night will have fun with this one! Everybody loves a clown. Personally I only like Pierrot.

Has anyone ever looked in John Wayne’s aka Marion Mitchell Morrison’s basement?

I forgive Mediaite totally, when this hit the wire everyone in their newsroom was frantically trying to get this out as fast as they could. This is Mediaite’s bread and butter and they got scooped big time. The only thing I can’t forgive is Alex insisting on inserting Sufjan Stevens in the article for no apparent reason. He is horrible.

No Borking has to take place, Bachmann is doing it to herself. Even Fox is giving her major cover today, when was the last time you ever saw a Fox host apologize for anything, the only thing I can think of is when that one guy said that racist thing about Obama a couple of weeks ago and that was like a 10 second oops sorry.

We don’t need Ted Kennedy to take down this woman she is doing it all on her own.

  • Nature Freak

Bachmann is now trying to spin her imbroglio. These Abba lyrics are for Michele:

And how could I ever refuse?
I feel like I win when I lose

    Waterloo
I was defeated, you won the war
    Waterloo
Promise you’ll love me forever more

    Waterloo
Couldn’t escape if I wanted to
    Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
    Waterloo
    Finally facing my Waterloo

It is a game. The left laughs when someone on the right makes a gaffe. We laugh when Obama does it. And at the rate Obama does it, it’ll be our turn again pretty soon. All part of the game.

  • TfT

Lefties are really stretching here; John wayne is from Iowa, Gacy is from the home town of Obama.

Poor Alex, she just can’t get her stuff together; she had to jump on the meme set up by the liberal media in order to attack Bachmann -it is just what left leaning women do, theyattack conservative women. As members of NOW (or maybenot), perhaps Alexshould justchange the headline of this article to say:

Bachman is a dumb bitch….that is what NOW would say,. and the ladies of the view; Alex is no better than them, she joins the crowd, thinks inside the box, and is unable to stand out and say what Bachman intended.l..that John wayne is a home town boy, born in the same state that Bachman was born in….but the mediaite staff only explain things when democrats mess up – no matter how serious (liketh eMOH story that Alex and her colleagues INGORED) or other stories where they work overtime to tell us what the individual meant (like MichelleObama when she said she was thankiful that the media was on her side and TC made up some story about what she meant).

Well, clearly, Alexis on theside of the Obamas, as is Dan,. and the rest of the mediaite staff…..making mountains out of molehills, working overtime to slander Bachmann while making up storiesto protect hehimself the one, their almight cult leader.

  • Colorado_Conservative

Following a lucrative offer from Gacy’s father-in-law to appoint him manager of three KFC restaurants,[16] Gacy and his wife moved from Illinois and settled in Waterloo, Iowa.

I don’t know enough about Bachmann and am interested in her so when this broke I thought well maybe they are right and she is a flake. Yes I’m sure Nacho, she said John Wayne, who was indeed born in her home state….the left wing media is making up sh!t again; she never said Gacy….just some leftiest decided to make an issue of something she never said, and mediaite jumped right on board and carried the bs story.

well Nacho – if waterloo is Gacy’s “home town” because he lived there for three years….at least Alex claims it as his “home town” than…..Alex will have to claim that Indonesia is Obama’s home town…that is unless of course Alex has multiple standards – some of republicans and none for democrats,. as is the way of most of the left.

Furthermore perhaps Alex should update her story with some additional factual information, as in (h/t hotair):

Bachmann’s campaign pointed out to ABC News today that actor John Wayne’s parents did live in Waterloo, although the actor himself did not.

And a little internet research proves that point correct.

According to the book “Duke: We’re Glad We Knew You” by Herb Fagen, Clyde and Molly Morrison – actor John Wayne’s parents – lived in Waterloo early in their marriage – but they moved to Winterset before the birth of son Marion Mitchell Morrison (he changed his name to John Wayne professionally).

But those are facts, something mediaite is pretty slow to report on (see the non-storries about MOH recipients, “under God’ editied out of pledge by NBC, and many other spiked stories that had factual basis that Alex and her pals ignored).

Next question would be is it his hometown? Does your husband consider that podunk Texas town his hometown?

The liberal journalists can’t help themselves in their anti-Bachmann feeding frenzy. But all they will achieve is to smear her enough so that Romney gets the nomination. And then their man Obama has to match up against a serious Republican with deep pockets and gravitas. By ignoring real issues and focusing on gotcha, the left will actually make the 2012 election a repeat of the Democrat debacle in 2010.

What the American Left OUGHT to do is engage on the economy and other significant issues — in fact that is their ONLY chance of helping Obama win next year’s election. They need to hold him accountable and get him to face up to the big issues that will decide the 2012 election. Instead the cover for him, and drift off into unreality. They are in such deep DENIAL that they think that they can make the public forget about the actual situations everybody experiences every day. And so this silly games-playing with Ms. Bachmann (symptomatic of a lack of seriousness that is pervasive in the liberal media) will just lead to further marginalization and trivialization of the American Left.

Liberals are just laughing? No liberals are ridiculing her for something she didn’t say. Take a good look back at the comments on this thread. Typical of them.

Did she or did she not say, “Just like John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa, that’s the kind of spirit that I have, too”?

Because it is those precise words at which I am laughing. Juxtaposed with the knowledge that the only John Wayne to live in Waterloo, Iowa was John Wayne Gacy, those words are riotously funny.

  • Ronald McReagan

We just need to find a conservative historian who can confirm that Gacy also made cowboy movies, won an Oscar, and represents everything noble and true about the American spirit.

Just keep your eye on Conservapedia, I’m sure they’re already coming out of the woodwork. I hear Glenn Beck is already working on a special segment about it.

He doesn’t consider any town his hometown as they never lived in one place for long but that doesn’t make your argument for you. If anything it makes the point that probably neither John Wayne nor John Wayne Gacy considered these towns there home towns so you are all wrong including Bachmann. But since the state takes pride that John Wayne was from there and Bachmann clearly meant John Wayne she only made a mistake between Winterhaven and Waterloo. Not a big deal in my book. But go on, make a mountain out of a mole hill.

  • Nacho

Bachmann doubled down and tried to justify her screw up by saying that the actor John Wayne’s parents lived in Waterloo, of course, they move before little John was ever born, but hey, stick with a screw up right? Never admit a mistake.

That was big goof it wasn’t like the towns were close together. Confusing a great actor to a serial killer is another big mistake.

Jesus christ, this story is ridiculous. I thought, given all the headlines, that she had actually said John Wayne Gacy instead of John Wayne or something. But no. She just made the very trivial mistake of mixing up one small Iowa town with another. HORROR! What an idiot! Everyone knows John Wayne is from small town Iowa X, not Z! Yo, Jon Stewart, I give you exhibit A of media bias.

This doesn’t come close the jaw-dropping stupidity of, oh, thinking ‘Austrian’ is a language or not knowing how many states there are(and getting it wrong repeatedly)or mistaking a living soldier for a dead one. Now those are true examples of jaw-dropping stupidity but the media didn’t devote a vat of ink(or any) to publishing those truly embarrassing screw ups made by well-known genius Obama. But, have gone ape shit of this bit of nothing.

  • labman57

Bachmann insists that she is not a flake. “I am a serious person”.

Translation: “I regret if any of my previously irrational, but completely candid remarks have damaged my image and credibility. I promise to try harder to stay on script in order to create the illusion that I’m not batsh*t crazy.”

Methinks Michele has a bit more work to do …

Yes it would be but the facts don’t show she did that. While Gacy lived for a few years and committed his crimes in Waterloo John Wayne’s parents lived in Waterloo shortly before he was born and he was born in Winterhaven. Gacy’s hometown was in Chicago where he returned when he got out of prison. It is only an interesting coincident that she made the mistake between the two cities and Gacy lived there for a while. She clearly meant John Wayne and it clearly isn’t that much of a mistake.

I came for a quick laugh and found 9 pages of progressives making mountains out of molehills, which itself was mostly the creation of an agenda driven media. There’s nothing of substance here but some vagary of speech made to seem more weighty than it is. Did Rachael Maddow suddenly become story editor here?

  • Rio

I know his parents were from Waterloo but, I believe little Marion had to move from Winterset to California long before he was able to join the corpse in Iowa.

We went to check out the bridges in Madison County and stopped to visit his tiny boyhood home and nope, no Marine Corpse uniforms on display there.

  • Rio

Oh, Della Street and Susan St. James were from my home town, if I ever run for president I will have to make sure I get that right. Wouldn’t want a bunch of libbies having to take to their keyboards looking like they just popped and alka selzer in their mouths. Ewww, that visual is quite disturbing and that’s exactly what’s “out there” after Michele Bachmann.

When you have to go through that big of explanation and drive over the bridge, get on the turnpike, go around the mountain to show it’s not a mistake; it’s a big mistake.

What is this going through mountains and over bridges? The distance between the two cities? I don’t live in the area but since John Waynes parents were from Waterloo I am convinced it was a simple mistake. Has little to do with the distance between the cities. Cacys hometown was Chicago not Waterloo but John Waynes parents were from Waterloo. Very simple to understand for most.

It was just a metaphor. But she just happen to get the two John Waynes mixed up? Even Hannity thought she goofed. He wasn’t from Chicago, but Waterloo. I know her people are trying change it in Wikipedia right now.

google Biography for John Wayne Gacy and you get multiple sites that verify he was born and raised in Chicago Illinois and died in Joliet, Illinois. He lived in Waterloo but it was not his hometown. You can also find this information on film. The Palin family must be something if they can get online and doctor all of those sites. I just pulled up 5 of them, one after another. Better put the crack pipe away Yoda.

It’s a pretty easy mistake.. they both can be confused as the other.. similarities..they are both white guys, both impressed young boys, both acted like clowns at times and both have been believed to be gay or bi sexual. neither served in the service although met and influenced political leaders and both are dead. I can’t remember each wayne’s political backing so I will end there, what’s the big deal here?

  • TfT

So….bowing Brian of the National barak Channel actually reported this, but NEVER reported Obama’s horrendous gaffe regarding the MOH recipient.

You can’t make this sh!t up; NBC has really gone over the line and make themselves more and more irrelevant daily.

I think more people watch the bower than Daianne/George or Scott becasue he makes them laugh with his open and straight up Obama lovin suck-upery.

Bowing Brian actually reported this but not the MOH incident – you just can’t make it up.

Where exactly on the Stupid-O-Meter does Bachman’s slipup over the birthtowns of JW and JWG rank when you consider that Obama thought there were 57 states in the Union and that “corpsman” was pronounced “corpse man?” Congresswoman Bachman’s comment barely jostles the needle!

Didn’t Obimbo recently make a remark about awarding the Medal of Honor to someone posthumously, but he couldn’t remember if it was posthumously or not! Ya, just how pathetic is that! No TelePrompter, no memory!!
