Norah O’Donnell: GOP Voters ‘More Uncomfortable With A Fox Commentator Than A Mormon’

Video

Before NBC’s Norah O’Donnell jumps to CBS, she’s squeezing in some time on the Chris Matthews Show and sharing some unknown facts from a recent NBC News/ Wall Street Journal poll of Republican primary voters. Chris Matthews wondered whether candidates like Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman would be hurt by their Mormonism with Republican voters, yet O’Donnell revealed some candidates are hurt even more by a different characteristic.

O’Donnell suggested that according to this poll, “among Republicans, they’re more uncomfortable with a Fox commentator than they are a Mormon.” That means, according to O’Donnell, candidates like Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, need to be more worried about their connection to Fox News upsetting Republicans, than Romney and O’Donnell need to worry about their religion. Michelle Cottle also suggested Mormonism will not be as big of a deal this time around, since having two Mormons in the race makes it “less exotic.”

This poll seems to be the same one that Chuck Todd referenced earlier in the week, and that strangely puts a lot of focus on asking Republican primary voters about Fox News. Although maybe the poll doesn’t take into account the simple fact that regardless of religion or Fox affiliation, voters simply think Romney and Huntsman are better candidates than Gingrich and Santorum?

So Fox News runs the Republican party, but Republicans don’t want someone who’s been on Fox. This makes perfect sense.

At first I thought: Norah had the good sense to get the hell away from MSNBC.

After seeing this I’m thinking: MSNBC realized that Norah’s brain is defective, so they unloaded her boney ass like a bad stock to the unsuspecting dummies at CBS.

Her words made no sense at all. She’s defective somewhere in there.

I still get baffled at the way Mormons are being addressed as if the Mormonism faith were a secret cult.
If an inherent Muslim was elected president in 2008, I see no problem with having a Mormon president.

O’Donnell is not anywhere near the top of the heap among TV political analysts, but why must you resort to crude language and juvenile name-calling because you don’t agree with her? Why not oppose her on the merits of her statement? A little civility is in order here. Grow up and act your age.

Uh huh, sure, right, you got it.

Norah O’Donnel and Chuck todd claiming they know anything about republicans is just laughablel. They are both Obama suck-ups and liberal to the hilt. They know nothink about how conservatives think or feel. They are just pushing the left’s agenda and propaganda like the DNC tells them too. Both are pretty useless as purveryers of truth or fact.

All mainline Christian churches teach that Mormonism is not Christian and that it is cultic. And, there are many secrets, albeit all exposed by now, such as magic underwear, teample exclusivity, historialc episodes such as the Mormon massacre of men, women, children, infants at Mountain Meadow and biographies, such as much of the personal life of Brigham Young and his “wives” who were abused and who suffered mysterious disappearances.

  • writer

Mainline churches also evidently teach that it’s okay to insult people’s children if you disagree with the parents’ politics, and that it’s okay to mock poor people if they live in trailers.

  • W.I.S.C

    What composes “mainline Christian churches?”

Demonizing Mormonism while defending Islam is so blatantly hypocritical that I don’t know why anyone would do it, even anonymously over the internet. Mr. Obama should convert to Mormonism for a weekend just to f-k with partisans like rrk.

  • ckw

Mainline Christian Churches include such Protestant bodies as Episcopalian, United Methodist, some Lutherans, Presbyterian and United Church of Christ. Baptists are part of the Evangelicals.

Too bad there is NOTHING is that poll that would indicate that in the slightest. O’Donnell was simply MAKING IT UP.

Too bad the “journalist” who wrote this regurgitation of her lie is too lazy to fact check her claims.

Hey Schneider. Stop being so lazy and investigate her claim. It has no basis in fact at all.

    http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/MSNBC/Sections/NEWS/A_Politics/_Today_Stories_Teases/11236%20JUNE%20NBC-WSJ%20Final%20Filled-in.pdf

Of course, the bleating liberal sheep on this comment thread are also regurgitating her lies without doing their own research.

Take a look folks. She is lying.

  • bobmoses

The word “Fox” appears in the poll once and only as an answer to this question:

” From which ONE of the following television news sources do you get MOST of your information about
    politics and current events”

O’Donnell is peddling an outright lie and Matt Schneider is assisting. The only question is whether Schneider is just lazy or instead knowingly complicit in spreading this lie.

Good grief, that laugh of hers has to go. Sounds like a pack of wild horses snorting as they are led out of the canyon and into the pen for the first time in their life. When Nora lived in Texas she was a solid Conservative Republican but, once PMSnbc got ahold of her she became a flaming liberal Socialist.

Is it true that Comcast has decided to shut LSDnbc down for the summer to air the two studios (NY & DC) out. You think you are in some 3rd world socialist country when you visit their news rooms.

  • insideguy

I do think it will be interesting to see how the evangelicals feel about a Mormon nominee. Its not the same as Obama because they weren’t gonna vote for him anyway. Its just that a real evangelical feels that mormons are a cult( I don’t think so but they do). Now if Romney wins they will have to bite the bullet I suppose and vote for him, it should be interesting to see what happens.

I can’t imagine why anyone would think that a religion whose followers believe in magic underwear could POSSIBLY be a cult!

  • insideguy

I find the mormon faith ridiculous. But that being said why is it any more ridiculous than any other faith? It baffles me how so called mainstream christian faiths rip on this faith all the time about magic underwear or hidden tablets or whatever. As outlandish as these beliefs are why are they more outlandish than what other christian or muslim or jewish faiths do, as far as their beliefs and rituals?

Yep. Magic underwear. You clearly have a firm grasp on the details of Mormonism. Does the Pope have a magic hat too? Are burkas magical? Are priest collars magical? Hmm…or maybe almost all religions have clothing with religious significance but because Mormons dont wear them on the outside it becomes mystical and strange. Enjoy your ignorance.

  • Paul G

Really?…my only post was….”Who?” and it got editied? REALLY? Hmmmmmm

  • mediadoubt

Well, I’d agree that Romney and Huntsman are less odious than Gingrich and Santorum by several orders of magnitude, so that may well be what the poll was reflecting.

I think there may be a couple of other things going on here. For moderate Republicans (I’m talking voters, now — I realize that moderate Republican officeholders are effectively extinct) the association with Fox may be negative because Fox is considered shrill, extremist, fact-challenged, and anti-intellectual. For such voters a more-or-less Christian faith would be no bar to office, but association with the screamers and foamers at Fox might well be.

These are voters, incidentally, that Obama and the Dems can pick up in 2012, because the Republicans are quite likely to pick some loon to run rather than Romney or Huntsman.

Are you sure that RC is part of the group of Christian churches called Mainline? Certainly, Roman
Catholicism is the major Christian church in America in numbers, but I think certain Protestant bodies go by the designation Mainline . Mainline is not a complimentary tag but a specific designation of Protestant churches. I do not profess infallibility though, so if you can document that RC as part of the Mainline group, I will cheerfully confess my error.

But it is a secret faith. It’s not like a non-Mormon can attend a Mormon wedding in the temple.

You are kind of wasting you time with this crew. They would vote for Barack Obama (R) over Barack Obama (D) any day. It is an alternate reality the live in. For most people in reasonable land, anyone like Huntsman or Romney would be such a step in the reasonable and thoughtful direction (which is what the echo chamber wants no part of).

O’Donnel is making conclusions from inadequate information, she may as well say since they both are males Republicans are uncomfortable with them, or because they are both white, or both have money, or, or, or… How ’bout they both are polling low because they aren’t seen as likely to win the top spot in the nomination?

Norah O’Donnell: GOP Voters ‘More Uncomfortable With A Fox Commentator Than A Mormon’

Where does this lady come up with these weird things. Being on the Chris Matthews Show, that’s it.

  • george L

The point O’Donnell is making is that Gingrich and Santorum were regular PAID

  • george L

Sorry for unfinished comment. O’Donnell was saying that Gingrich and Santorum became damaged goods by taking regular pay from Fox News. The same could be said of Huckabee, who decided not to run, and Palin, who will also probably decide not to run. It is fine for “strategists” to sell their “expertise” as paid contributors to a news organization, but once they do that, they cannot return to being full time politicians.
Electing them is like electing Fox News to run the country, and nobody is willing to do that.

It shouldn’t be a factor, but Mormonism is a major revulsion for the Religious Right. Mormons have been the subject of generations of systematic demonizing by American Protestantism, particularly the now so-called “Social or Religious Conservatives,” or evangelicals/fundamentalists, whatever the latest buzz handle for them is. It would take several passes and tens of thousands of words to really help you understand why–I know, because that’s sort of what my own blog is dedicated to–helping the Mormon and the “Christian” understand how little they actually know about their respective religions, and this particularly in regard to the “Christian Nation” movement that guys like Glenn Beck are trying to revive. http://lrwhitney.wordpress.com/

Your blog isn’t about helping anyone “understand” anything. It’s just a bunch of stereotypical Leftist anti-Beck, anti-Mormon, anti-Christian (unless they’re your specific brand of “Christian,” which must be as “Progressive” and anti-Mormon as you are), anti-conservative drivel.
