Pat Robertson Slams SNL: Tebow Skit Fueled By ‘Anti-Christian Bigotry’

video

Televangelist Pat Robertson was incensed by Saturday Night Live‘s parody of Denver Bronco’s quarterback Tim Tebow on Monday morning, calling it an attack on Christianity. “There’s an anti-Christian bigotry that is just disgusting and I think Saturday Night Live did a parody of that, had Jesus come in,” Robertson fumed. “If this had been a Muslim country and they had done that, and had Muhammad doing that stuff, you would have found bombs being thrown off!”

“And bodies on the street!” interjected co-anchor Terry Meeuwsen. “And bodies on the street!” Robertson repeated. “And we think it’s okay.”

“Tebow is an example, and I think he is a wonderful human being,” Robertson said. “We need more religious faith in our society. We’re losing our moral compass in our nation and this man has been placed in a unique position and I applaud him. God bless him.”

And if there is one person who knows a bigot when he sees one it is Pat Robertson.  The fact that this charlatan hasn’t been struck down dead is absolute proof that there is no god.

  • Anonymous

Poor Pat doesn’t like when some other ideology is put in his face…He should practice what he preaching, which was exactly the point of the skit. It even seemed as if he was suggesting what a shame it is that our country has to tolerate such tolerance?! Oh and evryone knows, God is a Packers fan! Has been for decades!
    Snl was hilarious! imo

  • Charles Ulysses Feney

Pat Robertson, who owns a gold mine in Liberia with the blood soaked Charles Taylor, that uses virtual slave labor.
“Depart from me, ye who work iniquity!

Sounds like a lot of Mediaite commenters.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

I’m pretty sure that God has enough glum-faced, sour hypocrites in the world already. No more need apply.

  • AMP2020

I don’t think it’s bigotry… Some good reasons to skew Tebow were in that other Mediaite article about Reliable Sources from yesterday. There’s a good conversation about it.
To quote Hitchens (on Falwell, but applies here too): If you gave him an enema you could bury him in a matchbox.

  • Mo Fokker

““We need more religious faith in our society.”

He means the right kind of faith.

  • kevin mora

“If this had been a Muslim country and they had done that, and had Muhammad doing that stuff, you would have found bombs being thrown off!” “And bodies on the street!” interjected co-anchor Terry Meeuwsen. “And bodies on the street!” Robertson repeated. “And we think it’s okay.”

So Pat, are you implying this country should take notes and be a little more like the Muslim fundamentalist’s? You, and your disgusting ancient views, need to open your mind a bit and realize there are others in this country who don’t care to take Christianity so seriously.

  • shonangreg

Yeah, screw the Bible and the Constitution, eh, Pat Robertson?

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray
standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.
I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.”
“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your
Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in
secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:5, 6:6

Rev. Pat Robertson is right. SNL is the go-to show for weasely sicko lefty atheists.

  • Anonymous

Sports fans around the country hoped that Tim Tebow would dethrone the Mighty New England Patriots, but he was unable to pull it off.  One thing he COULD pull off were Filipino boys’ foreskins though.  He spent his time while on a  mission to the Philippines assisting in circumcision procedures without the proper training.  Robertson probably thinks that’s ok.

  • Anonymous

It’s called a joke you idiot.  Jesus would have laughed his ass off.

  • Anonymous

True, he would have but only after somebody helped him pry those pesky stakes out from his extremities.  Damn that’s gotta hurt!

  • Anonymous

True dat.  But all he’s gotta do is ask the old man for a little pain relief.  It’s easy when pops is the creator of the universe.

This coming from a man who worships beneath a bloody effigy of a liberal who was supposedly tortured and murdered for speaking out against people like Robertson.

You can’t hate Christianity more than Republicans do.  It’s simply not possible.

    Nice.
    Use bigotry to criticize bigotry.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, those Muslim countries wouldn’t have allowed that sort of stuff. Gee, too bad we can’t be more like them, huh?
It’s called ‘humor’. You don’t have to be sicko, weasly, or atheist to get it – you just have to be relatively intelligent.

  • http://mediamatters.org/ Leedog

    Excellent!!  =)

  • Anonymous

SNL? Is that a black thing?

  • david r

How is that bigotry?  His statement is factually correct.  Remember the Swedish cartoonist who drew a picture of Mohammad and who had a fatwa issued calling for his murder?  Robertson is wrong to condemn SNL, though.  Tebow’s behavior begged for the skit.  You can criticize a Christian without being a bigot just like you can criticize a black man or woman without being a racist.

  • http://mediamatters.org/ Leedog

God must have been busy this weekend when Tebow had his ass handed to him by the Patriots!!

Furthermore, Pat is further proof the Republicans have no sense of humor!!

  • Anonymous

My first sentence is sarcasm.  I agree with you all the way and find it amazing that a creature such as Pat Robertson has the balls to paint anyone as a bigot based on his history.  If Tim Tebow wants to be Jesus’’ peacock every chance he gets, he should expect push back.  I also find it funny that his defenders call it hate if anyone dare mock the anointed one.  That’s a page right out of the cartoon idiots in the Muslim community.

Isn’t that what they always say?  We should kill because terrorists kill?  We should torture because terrorists torture?  We should abolish the Bill of Rights because terrorists don’t operate under a bill of rights?

  • Anonymous

Maybe Pat should clarify, is he advocating Christians throw bombs and leave bodies on the street in response to a satirical comedy piece?

  • Smack80

It would be funnier if it weren’t for the possibility that one could be our next Prez! I’m pretty sure that the comedians are praying for that though…can you imagine the material?

  • Smack80

::giggling:: But it’s okay to be bigoted against the LGBT community, they’re going to hell anyway!

  • Anonymous

Tebow is bringing more and more attention to what a good Christian man can be; how to live life and how to respect others.  I’m sure he is just fine with this attention, and good for him for being such a wonderful role model.

SNL can make fun of him all they want, all it does is make them look foolish.  These are the same people who yell “Free Mumia” right?  Praise the murderer, mock the Christian.  oh so left.

  • Smack80

But if they actually opened that Bible, read it in it’s entirety, not just taking pieces out of context, they would find that there is a “huge log” in their eyes.

  • Anonymous

Right?  It’s almost like he and his co-anchor were openly longing for retaliatory terrorism in response to anyone who makes a joke about religion.

  • Smack80

They don’t hate it, they just don’t understand it. They also use it as a tool to achieve their goals. As for Tebow, he’ll outgrow it.

  • Anonymous

Tim Tebow could definitely stand to re-read this passage.

  • Smack80

But he and pops are one and don’t forget the the ghost. So really, doesn’t he just have to ask himself?

Just so I get this straight, Pat…

Hey, we have freedom of religion in this country. You are free to choose any brand of Christianity you want. Stay away from those Mormons though, they’re a cult! Puleeez!

  • Anonymous

More people would become atheists if they read the bible.

  • Anonymous

It’s curious how when Tebow wins, the media is all “Jesus helped him!”, but is strangely absent when the opposite happens.

  • Smack80

But being a role model is about living your life with integrity, not about putting on shows of piety. There are many athletes living that way, humbly going about their lives, serving in their communities, taking care of their families, those are the role models. And I know this is shocking but, some aren’t even Christian (Yao Ming for example).

  • Smack80

Have you ever watched Tim Hawkins? He’s a riot! Pat Robertson is NOT a good example of what a Christian should be.

  • Anonymous

I am a Christian and I have admired Tim Tebow for years!  My son-in-law went to the University of Florida and I am familiar with TIm’s storied career.  I, nevertheless, thought the skit was very funny.  They should ask Tim Tebow to host the show once the season is over.

  • Smack80

Yep, worked for me! But as in any religion, there are teachings that are valuable.

  • Anonymous

His awareness of hypocrisy runs the intellectual gamut from A to B.

No, he is suggesting that in response to a satirical comedy piece, anybody who had anything to do with it should be turned over to the Romans for trial.  Pontius Pilate will serve as Judge and Dick Cheney will take care of the waterboarding to obtain “voluntary” confessions.

Not to be picky, but the cartoonist was Danish.  When all of that was going on, Jay Leno came out for his monologue and said the following:

Jay:     “Oh Kevin, I had the worst nightmare!”

Kevin:  “Gee Jay, what was it?”

Jay:     “I dreamed I walked into a Muslim bakery and asked for a Danish.”

A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or

and animosity toward those of differing beliefs.

So I’m not surprised you take issue here.

Yeah great story.  A guy who has trouble completing even basic screen passes through the first 55 minutes and who looks woefully inept as an NFL quarterback, gets lucky pulling off last second “miracles” against prevent defenses and horrible opposing quarterbacks.  Instead of players like the kicker, defense or WIllis McGahee getting any modicum of credit (if you know anything about football and/or have watched the games, which I have, you’d know they’re the ones who have been responsible for keeping young Timmy in the game).  Instead, Tim Tebow gets all the credit and 10 times the coverage of more accomplished players like Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, simply because he’s the most outwardly pious.

Not to mention, have you seen the guy celebrate?  Newsflash Christian fundies:  Just because you’re a believer doesn’t mean you should completely forgo that whole “humility” thing.  The same announcers who shake their cane at black players and tell them to “act like they been there before”  when celebrating, are the same guys worshiping young Timmy for his Christian-convulsions in the endzone after beating such teams as the 2-11 Vikings or 0-7 Dolphins.  Maybe young Timmy should brush up on his new Testament, like say Matthew 6:6:

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your
Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in
    secret, will reward you.”

  • CarmanK

Robertson will take any opportunity to promote his CHRISTIAN VICTIMHOOD, all the while in fact, subscribing to the ARROGANCE of christian views as superior to all others. TEBOW is a christian, he was not victimized by SNL, his extraordinary behavior was parodied. I could care less about Tim TEBOR, but I know him to be a devout christian who prays to his god. And that is okay with me. It is ashame that Robertson would consider it offensive, for a muslim to pray to MECCA in public but absolutley affirms Tebow’s right to pary on TV, in the middle of a football game. Do you know how many pro and college basketball players pray and make the sign of the cross before they make a free throw?? Regularly and they do it on TV.

Wrong again Barry (you must hear that a lot). Hitchens never sold some myth god and had credulous people send in their money so he could live like a king. He made arguments based on rational thought. The fact that he hurt some feelings on the way doesn’t put him on the same level on this snake oil salesman.  You don’t like Hitchens, fine, but the comparison is a nonstarter.  Hitchens was also not afraid to debate anyone on his ideas, unlike Saint Pat.

I remember something about a good Samaritian and a rich man and the difference in the way they treated the crime victim they found in the road. I see absolutely nothing I learned in church school in the Republican christian party, Pat Robertson or any other of the right wing Christians. I am no longer a christian but I still live by the rules of help one another  and care for the one who is hurting. I’m a better christian as a pagan than Robertson is as a preacher. If all god requires is a yes to Jesus he has very low standards for heaven.

it seems the media and culture of the hour makes a mockery of christianity and christian ideals at every turn. I ask everyone on this post to read thier history books a moment and find out what happened to the jews in the 1930′s and 40′s. It is a standerd belief that the holocost came out of nowhere, but where it came from was first mockery of the jewish faith, then anger, then systematic murder simply because of thier beliefs.
How much longer will it be that children get bullied and beat up at school for “daring” to be christians? Or churchs vanalised because TV and the internet christians were a bunch of stupid, self rightous hypicrites?
I see alot of hateful words on this post, and on all posts that have any mention of jesus or christianity.
Why does it have to be so unusual that a young man prays before a football game and paises and thanks god when he wins? Would you rather him get drunk and try to sleep with everything that walks as some players do?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Quiroga/1409332855 Christopher Quiroga

They were making fun of Tebow, not Christianity. Pat’s praise is ludicrous as Tebow is just a football player and I doubt if Jesus is really a Broncos fan. Jesus has better things to do than rig football games and music awards.

  • Eugene Bianchi

As a Christian, Pat Robertson has a right to be upset, but not because the skit portrayed bigotry.  No, Christians should be upset that Jesus, the center and foundation of the Christian faith, is portrayed as a humanist (someone who prays to people), a heretic (someone who calls Mormonism true), aggravated by people who trust in Him, vulgar and repulsive (showing gym socks and a long hairy leg), and someone who should not be taken seriously.

Jesus’ worth and value is reduced to rubble in a matter of minutes.  SNL did everything in their power to pan Christ and Christianity–objects to be disregarded and dismissed as having no consequence.
And by doing so, they aligned themselves with those guards who insulted Jesus as they stood over him and beat him before His death.  In mocking gestures, they said, “Prophesy, who hit you?”

In essence they proclaimed, “See, Jesus is powerless, even though he claims to be the Son of God!”

That’s why as a Christian I am upset with this skit.  And every Christian should be at least a little appalled and embarassed by this.  Pat Robertson was right to say that if Mohammed was portrayed in this way, wars may have been fought over it.

All that being said, I don’t think God places as much emphasis on American sports as we do.  That thought is actually a little funny.

They make fun of Tebow because he is a christian and not ashamed of it. That is why they made the snl skit, that is why there is so much controveristy.
Have you seen media shows lately? Everything is anti christian. Its okay to slam christians at every turn and getting more so. More witch shows, vampire shows, demon shows……
By doing this, the media destroyes a sense of what is right and what is wrong. It makes it ok to be angry and hateful toward someone simply because they are christian.

wtf? a lawyer? ok…lemme break it down:
Pat used an EXAMPLE of bigotry, as in Muslims’ intolerance and animosity towards those that ridicule their belief, in support of his CRITICIZING of SNL’s anti-christian bigotry.

The “pray in your closet thing” is directed at people who grandstand to make a show of their faith.  Some people would argue that is what Tebow is doing.  I don’t.  I think it comes from a genuine faith.  And that’s the whole point of “praying in the closet.”  Jesus looks for those who are genuine and not out for looks.  In no way does it mean you should “just keep your faith to yourself.”

I’m not a Robertson fan either and I don’t believe he speaks for me as a Christian.  I am sorry you see Christianity in this way.

You seem to miss the point about Muslims. It is their true lack of faith that drives some of them to react violently to criticism that questions their messiah. When Christians think about behaving violently to satirical sketches about their messiah then they are on the downhill slope too.

Wrong. Those actors would respect Tebow’s devotion to his religion, but not his advertising it all the time. He missed the Sunday school class about humility it seems. He is a very good football player who has found strength in his beliefs that help him to excel, but he should leave it there, by going overboard he actually does a disservice to his cause. He will win just as often by keeping his personal beliefs private.

Robertson has done more damage to Christianity than a choir room full of priests.

  • Anonymous

I find the “anti Christan bigotry” appalling, in this 80% Christan nation also.
PS. I think there is a bit in the bible about not being a hypocrite by praying in public. Keep it private, in your room, etc…………

What is wrong with having open prayer to god in public? You make this seem like some kind of crime. If I want to pray before my meal in a public place, (ie a resturant) I will pray. There is no shame in this, only in those who openly mock it. This young man is in a public spotlight for all to see. To him, there is no private life. What he is and what he does is on display at all times.
People misquote the bible all the time to suit their purposes. When Jesus was talking about praying in public vrs private, he was talking about the religious leaders of the day who had only outward gestures of piety. Inside these same people were rotten to the core.
Jesus himself, as were his followers, were extemly outspoken about their faith and the way to live in the paths of rightousness. If Jesus had stayed silent and been a “good little jew” to the eyes of those religous leaders he would have never been crucified.

I somewhat agree with pat Robertson. Christians should be more outrages at the way Jesus is being portrayed in the media. If it’s not something to uplift Christianity then he should not be portrayed. if someone portrays princess Diana in a negative way then all hell would breaks loose. but depicting Jesus as being annoyed by Tebow is fine

    Oh, go to hell, Pat.

Your description of who Jesus was complaining about sounds a lot like Robertson.
Tebow would do well to emulate another devout young man by the name of A.C.Green of the L.A. Lakers who had all the same beliefs but did not flaunt them. It is simply distracting, and annoying, and implies that he feels superior to all the other players. He should have more respect for all the people that paid to see him play football, not pray.

The issue here isn’t anti-Christian bigotry. It’s about people like Tim Tebow who don’t let the rest of us forget that he’s a Christian. Wouldn’t it be a little absurd, not to mention annoying, if everyone dropped to one knee every time something went their way. Just imagine if every other football player did this all the time. People would eventually get so sick of this they turn off their TV’s. There’s nothing wrong with someone having a religious faith but does it have to be displayed so publicly?

    Huh?

  • Anonymous

How does praying to god imply a feeling of “superiority”? It takes a certian amount in courage in my eyes to openly believe in god and a higher calling. And why not feel inspired by god to win a game?
People like someone who inspires them, heroes who are not afraid to stand by their beliefes in adveristy and tell the truth. That is why with as much dissention he has caused, there are many others who rally behind him because being a christian has come under alot of attack lately. What is “distracting and annoying” for you is that he believes in something you do not.

Possibly! Maybe Trinity Broadcasting is looking for an heir apparent for Paul Crouch and his ever-more freakish wife.

    Love Tebow. Despise Robertson.

Lighten up, Patrick, the skit was funny and decidedly uncritical of Christians. Humor is good for the soul, and taking in stride an occasional good-natured joke at your own expense helps make you a better human being.

Hitchens was not exactly an honest person himself. An early admirer of Communism, he all of sudden decided to advocate using America’s military to forward his own causes, like with his idiot friend Salman Rushdie. And then there was Iraq and Saddam, who had about as much to do with 9/11 as they did with the Rushdie Fatwa. He also denied that Stalin and Mussolini were atheists, while greatly exaggerating Hitler’s nominal Roman Catholicism (he hadnt attended service in decades)

so comparing Hitchens to Robertson in that ridiculous

When the Jewish religion is mocked on TV, then all will be equal…and we can all have a big laugh at ourselves.

But, until then, as long as Jews and their religion are UNTOUCHABLE by the media, no one has any right to mock or condemn the Christian religion….which happens to be the vast majority of people in this country, in case there are any delusions about that.

FIND ONE SNL SKIT that bashes Jews??????????!!!  or their religion!  Won’t happen.
