Pentagon Briefing Announces U.S. Missile Strikes On Libyan Air Defense Targets

video

American and European forces have begun airstrikes on Libya, with both fighter jets and cruise missiles hitting targets in the country Saturday. In a Pentagon briefing, Vice Admiral William Gortney said U.S. Navy warships and submarines had fired 110 Tomahawk missiles, striking air defense targets around Tripoli and Misurata.

President Obama, on a visit to Brazil, made clear again that no American ground forces would be involved in military action in Libya:

“I am deeply aware of the risks of any military action, no matter what limits we place on it,” he said. “I want the American people to know that the use of force is not our first choice, and it’s not a choice that I make lightly. But we can’t stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people that there will be no mercy.”

Watch the Pentagon briefing here, from CNN:

I’m amazed at how quickly and efficiently Obama has got his ducks in a row and organised a response that doesn’t make America look like the Islamobashing bully-boy that his predecessor did.I’m sure the Republican’ts know this at heart and are insanely jealous of the man’s unflappable, intelligent and effective approach. LOL!!!

Can’t wait to hear how the lamestreams socialist fake-news types blame this war on bush — so they can say it’s a BAD, very BAD war (unlike a war by “You Lie!” hussein, which, of course, would be a GOOD, very GOOD war, even though that’s an oxymoron to the morons of the lunatic-left.)

And I’m sure that the left will call for Obama to send his daughters off to war just like they did with Bush. Vile liberal pukes…….

  • Newt Limbaugh

For those of you who say I’m never wrong, I never admit I’m wrong, well, you’re wrong, because I was wrong when I said that Americans who continue demonstrating against the war once the shooting begins are being un-American. I’m taking that back.

The word un-American implies some kind of lasting stigma and is a word of intimidation. Thus it is the wrong word to use in this scenario.

People who lawfully dissent should never be labeled un-American. Instead, I will call those who publicly criticize our country in a time of military crisis, which this is, bad Americans and it is my constitutional right to make that judgment and you are free to agree or disagree. You can call me a bad American for making the judgment.

So we are bombing yet another country now. Great. Obama has increased our troop levels oversea leading to more American deaths in two years than the entire Bush administration. There have been more Predator drone strikes in Obama’s first two years compared to all of Bush’s term. And now we are bombing yet another country. Yet the left says nothing. In fact they give him a Nobel Peace prize.

Personally, I think it is high time that France go first and Italy supplies air bases to at long last try to ameliorate their shameful and cowardly part in Reagan’s attack by refusing the US planes their air space and use of air bases.

“For the Libyan raid, the United States was denied overflight rights by France, Spain and Italy as well as the use of European continental bases, forcing the Air Force portion of the operation to be flown around France, Spain and through the Straits of Gibraltar, adding 1,300 miles (2,100 km) each way and requiring multiple aerial refuelings..”

    Sarah Palin, three weeks ago:

It’s a little perplexing looking at the White House today. There was a statement on the horrible earthquake in New Zealand, and certainly our hearts go out to all those affected by this horrible natural disaster. But nothing on the slaughter in Libya? The protests in many places in the Middle East affect regimes that have cooperated with the U.S. on issues from peace with Israel, fighting al Qaeda, hosting our military forces, or cooperating against Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Gaddafi’s Libya is different. For four decades, this tyrant has held power. Gaddafi was Osama before Osama hit the scene. He ordered the bombing of a disco in Germany to kill Americans. When he paid the price for that – after President Reagan rightly ordered retaliation – he directed his agents to blow up Pan Am Flight 103. They did, and more than 250 innocent people died. Gaddafi tried to come in from the cold in 2003 – scared by the demonstration effect of Iraq. But we should have no illusions. Gaddafi is a brutal killer and Libya – not to mention the world – would be better off if he were out of power. Now is the time to speak out. Speak out for the long-suffering Libyan people. Speak out for the victims of Gaddafi’s terror. NATO and our allies should look at establishing a no-fly zone so Libyan air forces cannot continue slaughtering the Libyan people. We should not be afraid of freedom, especially when it comes to people suffering under a brutal enemy of America. Here’s to freedom from Gaddafi for the people of Libya.

I tend to agree. Although, every partisan hack was eager to condemn Obama for standing by while this dictator bombed his own people, it’s not our fight or our responsibility to resolve internal issues in other sovereign nations.

It should be the responsibility of the UN security council to be involved enough to help prevent the needless killing of civilians. I don’t believe we should be committed to or heavily involved in removing Gadaffi. It’s not our role.

Don’t look now, little johnny t, but the Iraq War started almost to the day in 2003, not 2001.

What’s the matter, MSNBC and News Hounds didn’t tell you that?

As for Libya, let me try to get this straight- we are now trying to help take down a ruler, the same one we propped up for many years, without any clue of who will be running the country once we take him down? We don’t have a very good track record when it comes to foresight in the Middle East, so why don’t we just keep our noses out of it? It’s not like we have a ton of money to spend on world policing.

It should be the responsibility of the UN security council to be involved enough to help prevent the needless killing of civilians. I don’t believe we should be committed to or heavily involved in removing Gadaffi. It’s not our role.

I agree with that with the caveat that it is the proper role of the strongest democratic government in the world to always be in the lead making every effort to shape events rather than merely reacting to them.

With strong US leadership don’t you agree that the point we finally reached, aerial intervention in Libya, would have been far more effective in both saving innocent lives and leaving the way open for a regime change.

The big difference between regime change in Egypt vs Libya is that Egypt has a strong Islamic Jihadist faction in place with the Muslim Brotherhood (latest election results give them a bigger leg up) and Libya has no coherent faction waiting in the wings. Egypt’s prior regime was pro America/Israeli peace while the current Libyan regime is virulently anti American and a known terrorist state.

I never thought I would ever see the day the “progressives” would be so pro-war and pro-civilian death. All because of a half black president. Simply unbelievable. Historians are doing head scratches, I’m sure.

I don’t think it’s that progressives are pro-war, I think it’s that they can’t wait to watch you Conservatards do backflips and try to find your spin on why it isn’t ok to do this. Because you hate the Pres. But you already have your little angle: “he WAITED too LONG!! Waaaaahhhhhh!” Umm, Bush Sr asked the Iraqis to rise up against Hussein, and then bolted on them. Losing, duh!

Bleeding Libs hate war. Just to remind them that ‘Their’ Obamo has now started two ‘necessary’ wars…one in Afghanistan and one in Libya. Oh, wait. The Libya war is a noose around Hillary’s neck, I guess. Either way, the war-haters now have two wars to their credit. LOL @ them.

Afghanistan was Bush’s, duh. Obama cleaning up his little messy pants.

    Support the troops, losers!

You were right to call me on that one. ‘Propped up’ was a poor choice of terms. Maybe I should have gone with “treated him with far more respect than he ever deserved.” After he proclaimed about 8 years ago that Libya was no longer planning to build weapons of mass destruction, our government seemed willing to wipe his history clean. Not only did we drop sanctions, but we even removed Libya from our ‘sponsors of terrorism’ list!
Condoleezza Rice kissed up to him a couple years ago, then Obama did the same recently. That said, I stand by the rest of my statement.

Obama is starting a war? And without an exit strategy? Boy, has he changed…

I can go along with that even though I have a somewhat different take on it than you do.

Don’t forget in return for that recognition it does appear that he gave up his nukes/nuke ambitions. That can always be iffy (see N Korea) but with the absence of any reporting about possible Libyan nukes it may be substantially true. I think it was worth the little we gave him to not have a Nuclear Gadafi right now.

As for the rest see my response just above to Dan.

Helter skelter regime change in the rest of the ME causes me the greatest concern in those regimes that are more aligned with the West.and any change will likely be to another Islamic Jihadist Theocracy a la Iran.

    Selfish? Absolutely!

However, as far as the suffering of their populations the ME countries all have downtrodden populations and given a choice I’d prefer that their inevitable suffering at least be of some benefit to the rest of the world. It benefits no one, even their own populations, for Ilamic Jihadist regimes to blossom and spread.

Does anyone remember all the criticism directed GHWB’s way in the lead up to Gulf War One for going fishing one time?

That was in spite of GWHB being very publicly active in building the coalition and leading the UN to his eventually shortly thereafter successful widely supported world wide liberation of Kuwait.

The point this time is that BHO has not put himself on the line re this Libya crisis and has done what is normal for him, react after the decision making and heavy lifting is over.

His golf game is just one in a long line of such events that are still ongoing. We have not seen or heard BHO being proactive about any of what has been going on in the ME for months.

The criticism is based on what he has failed to do and what we see all too often of his very active social life seeming to be a priority.

He earned this criticism big time, IMO.

Here’s another conservative example of Obama as Nero:

    Harry Flashman says:
    March 18, 2011 at 1:41 pm (Quote)

    It’s not the golf.

It’s the fact that the image he porteys to the world is of a casual and disconnceted president dressed in shorts and swinging a golf club while history is pivoting in a burning Middle East, our staunch ally Japan is in agony, and unions are working to overcome the rule of law in a country he has sworn to defend.

He doesn’t get it. This ain’t the time to be photoed hitting the links, Barry. Doesn’t exactly instill the same confidence in people as being pictured behind the desk in the Oval Office, does it?

Personally, based on Secretary Gate’s explanation that a no-fly zone would involve sending in troops, I am against starting another war. I understand the humanitarian reasons to stop Gaddafi from attacking his own people with tanks and missiles (and it’s not about oil, since the Saudis already promised to make up any loss in production from Libya). Now that the attack has begun, I hope for that best, which is a limited military action using our weapons to eliminate obvious humanitarian threats. If Obama is able to achieve the same political and military objectives that Clinton did in Bosnia, where we did not commit troops, I would go along with it. But, if there is another invasion, I would be against it as much as I was against the Iraq war.

On the other hand, conservatives have shown such cowardice and hypocrisy, it is sickening. You can’t attack Obama for not doing anything, then attack him for doing something. You can’t praise Bush Sr. for forming an international, UN-back coalition in Gulf War I, and then criticize Obama for going through the same thoughtful process to take out Gaddafi’s tanks and missiles. You can’t attack Obama for starting a military action and then also attack him because he has promised the American people that we will not commit ground troops to Libya.

Well, actually, you can, and you all already have. But it only makes you sound like a bunch of middle schoolers.

As Bill O said, you right wing trolls are not anti-Americans; just simply bad ones.

I can hardly wait to hear what Bill O says about Libya tonight :)

You don’t seem to have given much thought to the consequences of your criticisms. If the world were to establish a precedent to punish those leaders who actually comply with demands and give up their weapons of mass destruction, no rouge state would ever after seek to satisfy the will of the international community. What would be the point? The only alternative the world would be left with in every situation henceforth would be to issue demands and dictates backed with the force of arms.

Motivations to make deals must be real, and honest, or diplomacy fails.
