Rachel Maddow’s Facts About Fox News On Letterman Might Not Be So Factual After All

Last December, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow visited David Letterman to discuss, among other things, Fox News – what would a pundit have to discuss, after all, if not a rival news network?

When asked by Letterman about network bias, Maddow responded that “I of course think [MSNBC] is much more true than Fox is true,” pointing out that Fox News had reported, multiple times, that “the New Black Panther Party decided the election for Barack Obama.”

A bold claim. So bold, in fact, that it prompted PolitiFact – “a project of the St. Petersburg Times to help you find the truth in politics” – to investigate her claim. After combing through transcripts from the network, it found that, rather than make the sweeping statement that the Party “elected” Obama, Fox News instead reported on “the legal side of the story and whether other media outlets were derelict in not giving it enough attention.”

What a shock, Maddow’s obsession with all things Fox has made her tell another lie. I wonder if the MSNBC “newspeople” have pictures of Rupert Murdoch on their mirrors like Rock had, of Drago, in Rocky 4.

Letterman and Maddow . Two of a kind . That’s some great entertainment there .

Really? Rachel Maddow isn’t an authoritative view point on the opinions of fox news, or conservatives? Now what–next I’ll hear Keith Olbermann has bias…

  • ImNotBlue

Well I’m sure she’ll graciously correct it as soon as possible…

    Yes, I’m so sure.

That’s just a really stupid thing for her to say, even liberal MSNBC’ers wouldn’t really think that Fox actually said that.

Yeah right, republicans think the new black pathers decided the election like the democrats thinks judicial activism decided the 2000 election. The new black pathers was a case of local voter intimidation suppressed by the DOJ on racial lines, Bush v. Gore was a matter of sore losers unwilling to accepts facts. No one thinks the NBP altered the outcome of the election, but their behavior was illegal nonetheless.

Are you guys kidding? By claiming that people were intimidated from voting at the Housing Project that is 65% African American where those TWO guys who comprise the NBPP, fox was, as usual bending the truth. What did you think they were implying? A stolen election! Oh, and politifact didn’t do itself any favors when they claimed the President did raise taxes despite what he told Bill O in that dreadful interview. What taxes did the President actually raise? The tanning bed and cigarette tax. Of course those don’t affect the middle class. Just the one’s stupid enough to indulge in either.

This is an excellent example of the death of journalism. Rachel Maddow, despite what a lot of people think, is an articulate, thoughtful, and intelligent journalist. However, since she joined MSNBC who subsequently declared jihad against Fox she has become another yapping talk show host.

The quote in question, however, also shows Fox again playing their “you can only trust us” card. From the link:

“The transcripts we looked at showed that there was indeed lots of coverage on Fox. However, the discussions focused on the legal side of the story and whether other media outlets were derelict in not giving it enough attention.”

So rather than simply report it, the story became about how Fox is looking out for you and everyone else is crap. They report on other media sources just as much as they are reported on.

Look at Democrats with health care repeal, same talking points every interview. You don’t even have to listen anymore, you know what they are going to say. Unfortunately with all the media outlets echoing thier talking points it’s becoming a losing proposition for the right. Thier lies become truths, very sad situation.

Though they do have some good journalists – in fact I’m watching Fox right now – there’s plenty of stuff to call out Fox News for. Nope, she was talking straight, and incorrectly. FNC implied that a voter intimidation case was downplayed because of race. Well, YEAH, it was two crazy black guys shouting nonsense in front of a black precinct. It may have technically been a crime, but the race issue involved kinda negated it. Not worth the DOJ’s time; certainly not worth FNC’s. But Rachel blew it.

I will agree. They have good some journalists. I like Wendell Goller, Emanuel (WH correspondents) Catherine Herridge (Pentagon), Jenna Lee, Scott, Bill Hemmer, Julie Banderas (is she still there?), Shepard Smith and sometimes Kelly & Wallace when they’re not reading the GOP talking points. I also like O’Reilly for opinion even though I expect his biases but he’s at least fair in some quarters. So even though most of us lefties are very critical towards FNC, we do respect a lot of their journalists who on the most part do their job and abstain from hack partisan reporting.

Nope- The story was how the DOJ refused to prosecute. No one was suggesting that a single polling station in Philly being intimidated stole an election. You are making the same extrapolation Ms. Maddow did- only she is smart enough to know better.

OK, I’ll Bite. What taxes did Obama Raise?

Tax Increases included in Obama’s Fiscal 2009 Budget:

$179 billion – eliminate itemized deduction
$118 billion – capital gains tax hike
$17 billion – Reinstate Superfund taxes
    $24 billion – tax carried-interest as income
$5 billion – codify “economic substance doctrine”
    $61 billion – repeal LIFO
$210 billion – international enforcement, reform deferral, other tax reform
$4 billion – information reporting for rental payments
$5.3 billion – excise tax on Gulf of Mexico oil and gas
$3.4 billion – repeal expensing of tangible drilling costs
$62 million – repeal deduction for tertiary injectants
$49 million – repeal passive loss exception for working interests in oil and natural gas properties
$13 billion – repeal manufacturing tax deduction for oil and natural gas companies
$1 billion – increase to 7 years geological and geophysical amortization period for independent producers
$882 million – eliminate advanced earned income tax credit

Total: $353 billion in tax increases over 10 years

What that doesn’t count, and its a biggie: Cap and Trade. It was passed in the house, but because of political pressure the senate never brought it for a vote and died. (thank you filibuster!)

But what we do know is that Obama wanted it: and with it came a hike on energy rates for every person, rich or poor.

Just because it didnt pass didnt mean Obama wasnt for it- and he would have signed it in a heartbeat.

So you can excuse me for not patting Obama on the back for not getting his way.

Thanks to Republicans, he can claim he didnt raise income taxes. (Bush tax cuts didnt expire like he wanted)

Thanks to Conservatives, Obama wasnt able to pass the SINGLE BIGGEST TAX in American History.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504383_162-5314040-504383.html

Obama now wants to raise payroll taxes. We’ll see what happens next:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ac/20110209/pl_ac/7813834_obama_tax_proposal_could_double_state_payroll_taxes

(Notice I dont link to conservative blogs. This is credible, unlike when you link to Media Matters.)

So whether or not he was able to raise taxes, the point is if Obama got his way, we would all be paying much more in taxes, so him saying he didnt raise taxes once is rather disingenuous because we all know he wanted to.

Very likely a stupid oversight. She probably just heard that little false tidbit from somewhere inside her bubble and, because of her partisan nature, believed it without reservation. She is a Rhodes Scholar, but studied politics, not journalism. So it’s not in her training to question the veracity of that which she believes. That’s what makes her show not news. That it’s not in her nature to question the veracity of that which she believes makes her show, for me, not watchable.

Look at Democrats with health care repeal, same talking points every interview. You don’t even have to listen anymore, you know what they are going to say. Unfortunately with all the media outlets echoing thier talking points it’s becoming a losing proposition for the right. Thier lies become truths, very sad situation.

What moronic tripe. Reagan raised Taxes 11 Times and tripled the Deficit. Bush brought the country to it’s knees spending and borrowing – WHO DO YOU THINK HAS TO PAY FOR YOUR MISTAKES? Dumbarses.

Why are you bitching and moaning? Democrats are bailing out the credit spending, government expanding, constitution shredding Republicans AGAIN. This economy, left by your King George – has to be paid for. “Income Tax is what educated American understood the president to be talking about – and in addition – he only said for 95% of Americans their taxes would go up – they would get relief – and we did pay less. Of course, we didn’t get the $1,000,000,000,000 that the top 1.5% of Bush’s buddies did – no where near – but hey, he we did get income tax reduction from the Fed.

The Fox Cycle: From bogus right-wing attack to mainstream news
    July 12, 2010 8:56 am ET

. . . [The] New Black Panther story follow[s] a familiar pattern. Fox News’ embrace of [J. Christian] Adams’ accusations against the Department of Justice are in keeping with a pattern observed in previous instances in which a bogus story has jumped from the conservative fringe to the mainstream media:

    1. Right-wing bloggers, talk radio hosts, and other conservative media outlets start promoting and distorting the story.

    2. Fox News picks up the story and gives it heavy, one-sided coverage.

    3. Fox News and conservative media attack the “liberal media” for ignoring the distorted story.

    4. Mainstream media outlets eventually cover the story, echoing the right-wing distortions.

    5. Fox News receives credit for promoting the story.

    6. The story is later proven to be false or wildly misleading, long after damage is done. . . .

Fox whopper: DOJ said Voting Rights Act wasn’t violated in New Black Panthers case
    September 24, 2010 10:34 pm ET

Reporting on Justice Department lawyer Christopher Coates testimony on the phony New Black Panthers Party scandal, Fox News falsely reported that the Justice Department had “determined that the Voting Rights Act… had not been violated” in the case. In fact, the Obama administration’s DOJ obtained default judgment against one of the defendants on the basis of his violation of that law. . . .

A search on MediaMatters.org using the terms ‘New Black Panthers” and “Fox” returns well over 100 items similar to those above. Nearly all contain numerous source links or other documentation. Disbelievers are welcome to disprove any of the MM articles and report their findings here. (Request #26.)

Maddow is essentially correct. Fakes “News” relentlessly hyped the importance and influence of the New Black Panthers – both of them – in Obama’s election.

    Rachel Maddow is intellectual dishonest.
She’s supposedly smart enough to be able to discern what the truth is, but she conveniently rarely presents the truth to her audience. She’s too busy making false statements or omitting the inconvenient facts which will disprove her biased and slanted presentation of current news topics.

What moronic tripe. Reagan raised Taxes 11 Times and tripled the Deficit. Bush brought the country to it’s knees spending and borrowing – WHO DO YOU THINK HAS TO PAY FOR YOUR MISTAKES? Dumbarses.

Reagan about doubled REVENUE; Congress over spent. The deficit was dropping as Reagan left office.

Regardless, if you are so concerned about the deficit and spending, you must be going berserk with hatred over Obama and the Democrats and they terrible leadership.

Jazzy Jim, it was reported for weeks a couple months ago that for every $60K a private sector worker makes, a public sector worker makes 120K. That’s what Boehner was referencing and it’s sad you weren’t knowledgeable of it as well.

  • Tedderman

Well, whoever reported that is wrong, wrong, wrong. Boehner evidently misread the stats through his constant stream of tears.

  • WildMan

Well facts and the truth don’t matter to Randy Madcow as long as she/he can present it in the most sarcastic way possible. Good grief, where does MSNBC find their talking idiots?

Reagan more than tripled the national DEBT from less than $1 trillion to $3 trillion during his time in office and spent more $$$ than all of his predecessors combined.

Your statistics – such as they are – mislead. Radio host Thom Hartmann notes that while lower-level public sector employees (janitors, etc.) make more than their private sector counterparts, mid- and upper- level professionals (administrators, advanced-degree professionals) earn LESS than their private sector counterparts.

Judge John Roll, a victim of the Tuscon shootings, was such a person. He surely could have made more money as a private lawyer but chose to serve. We would be a lesser country if such people chose self-interest over public service.

Stephen Hemsley, the CEO of UnitedHealthCare, earns almost $100 million per year. The bureaucrats who run Medicare, Medicaid, the Social Security Administration and other government programs earn a tiny fraction of that amount.

“Well facts and the truth don’t matter to Randy Madcow as long as she/he can present it in the most sarcastic way possible.”

You have no rational argument so you resort to irrational cheap shots.

Homophobia isn’t recognized as a mental illness – but you make a strong case for it.

“Good grief, where does MSNBC find their talking idiots?”

    Apply. You’re a cinch.

Gotta love these conservatives and their dedication to defending each other, no matter the veracity of the claims. Their constant assertion that the media present news that is liberally biased ignores the way the media never mentions the massive amount of data collected by scientists over the years since WW2 that shows how strongly conservatism and authoritarian attitudes will be found in the same person (r = .76….so high that most psychologists no longer distinguish between the two).
They never explain how conservatism is associated with increased levels of fear, aggression, superstitious or magical thinking, low cognitive complexity, poor integration of new info/ideas (hence their ability to argue conflicting points of view without ever realising it). They are more likely to hold simplistic, stereotypical views of others leading to more racist, bigotted, sexist, homophobic statements and beliefs than any other group of people. They have such poor self-concept however that most truly believe they are more righteous, just and fair-minded than others, frequently projecting their faults onto others …usually those who dare to point these facts out to them.
They are more dogmatic and rigid in their beliefs, will seldom change a POV unless an authority of theirs tells them to, then they seem compelled to believe it, even when it is against everything they used to think. The “birthers” are all conservatives with high authoritarian folower traits (RWA). When their leadership among the GOP began looking to increase their black constituency, they did so by telling the media they werent racist and that racism is no longer acceptable among patriot Americans..clearly a conflict of needs for lifelong racists. So the mind defended itself by finding another reason to reject Obama as POTUS, a title that clearly implies he is their own superior as well. Hence “birtherism”.

“Conservatism is not the doctrine of the intellectual elite or of the more intelligent segments of the population, but the reverse. By every measure available to us, conservative beliefs are found most frequently among the uniformed, the poorly educated, and the less intelligent” (p. 38). McClosky, H. Conservatism and personality. American Political Science Review, 52, 27-45.

    This headline says it all:

“Rachel Maddow’s Facts About Fox News On Letterman Might Not Be So Factual After All.”

Sorry, but “Rachel Maddow” and “facts” are never in the same universe, much less the same room.

Even Politifact, that left-wing outfit that mocks Republicans, had enough of her lying through her fake teeth when it called her out for saying that Wisconsin did not have a budget deficit, when everyone sans Maddow (and other nitwits, for instance, in the labor movement) know that the state is drowning in red ink, thanks to the former Governor of that state (read: Democrat) and the unions, which have sucked the lifeblood out of this entire country.

“Reagan more than tripled the national DEBT from less than $1 trillion to $3 trillion during his time in office.”

    Over EIGHT YEARS.

Zerobama has added THREE TRILLION to the deficit in two plus years, and will add five trillion in his one (and hopefully only) term.

I, for one, pray that the GOP filibusters the debt ceiling rise, so that the entire stinking junta led by King Louis XVI, er, Barry Soetero, collapses. It’s gonna collapse soon anyway, so it might as well happen on Zerobama’s watch.
