Sen. Lindsey Graham: ‘Freedom Of Speech Is A Great Idea But We’re In A War’

Video

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham appeared with Bob Schieffer and joined others in condemning the actions of the Koran burning Pastor. However, Graham took it a step further, hinting that he would like to see Congress consider actions to limit such free expression by the Pastor and others in the future.

Graham told Schieffer:

“I wish we could find some way to hold people accountable. Free speech is a great idea, but we’re in a war. During World War II, you had limits on what you could do if it inspired the enemy. Burning a Koran is a terrible thing, but it doesn’t justify killing someone.”

Given that Graham sincerely believes such free expression “puts our troops at risk,” his desire to do anything in America in order to keep them safe may sound noble. Yet how exactly does Graham envision limiting free speech and for how long would he like to do it? Unfortunately, Schieffer moved right along to the next question before learning any details or discovering how serious Graham truly was.

There’s no need to shamelessly instigate for the purpose of instigating. Stupidity is and will continue to be the downfall of this country, not debt or bad Presidents, those are just symptoms of the problem.

Come out of the closet Lindsey and just admit you are a Democrat.
Believe me…no one on this side will miss you.

  • ModerateMan

If you took the worst ideas of Democrats and Republicans and combined them you would have Lindsey Graham. Please vote this man out of office South Carolina.

So Maher calling the koran a ” hate filled holy book ” is now a problem ?

The Democrats in this country have never seemed to be able to find & use any restraint.

Remember how you were when George Bush was in office?

It would be instructive to know where Graham would like to draw that line, and where, during World War II “Der Fuhrer’s Face” would have landed in relation to it.

Message to Lyndsey, the GOP and those who ant to silence the people. There are no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’ about free speech. You either take it or leave it. Reminds me of the crap they did during the Iraq disaster, anyone who question their tactics was labelled ‘unpatriotic’, bunch of assholes.

  • skyfet

By the way the Pastor is mad and the media that give him publicity are insane. Those are the group Lyndsey needs to have a word with.

  • Harry Flashman

So….will he also want to restrict the placing of a cricifix in a har of urine and calling “Piss Christ” in the name of art?

    I doubt it. Hypocrites.

  • Liberal Tormentor

Though the pastor is revolting, he isn’t responsible for the killings. Radical Muslims don’t need an excuse and they prove every day when they murder. The reason for their killing is merely that we exist and don’t agree with them. It’s as simple as that.

I’m guessing Gramnesty and those who agree with him, have no such plans for those who would burn the Bible. or texts of any other religions. Why must we coddle one group of people?

  • TeaPartyPatriot

In the underbelly of the US Senate (specifically, at the end of the lower intestine) is where we find THE SLIMEBAG SIX despicable, rino traitors who will continue to support d-crat socialist issues, and everybody knows who they are: AMNESTY-JOHN mccain, scott brown, collins, snowe, murCOWski and graham.

That’s part of the “hit list” for all American patriots to follow in future elections.

Graham is a half a sissy / and liberal on most issues. I used to think it was about political expediency, but he’s now proven he was born that way.

He oughta just come out of the closet, leave his wife for Obama and declare himself a democrat for crying out loud.

Aaaaand scene. Nice job, Bob. No need for follow ups, just keep on rolling. Got to get to a commercial break. I think news outlets could save some money by just getting rid of anchors altogether. Just have some robot like Watson recite all the headlines and let the politicians ask their own questions they would like to answer.

  • writer

So Graham is saying you can fire missiles at them, but don’t say anything offensive or it might make them mad?

  • Steve_27

If “threats to our troops” are the concern, I can think of a few democrats that are bigger a-holes then pastor Jones.

Anyway, Graham is a meathead, has been before. The issue continues to be people who are missing the big point here. Inside Islam is an element that wants a world wide caliphate. They are the enemy, there is no diplomacy to be had with them. These are the individuals who DO NOT believe in an eye for an eye, but a life for an expression of freedom. No one that feels that taking a life equates the rough handling of a book can claim to be an authority on how civilization should be conducted.

There are plenty of actions and incidents that prove why terrorism needs to be confronted and eradicated. Reactions like these to what we hold dear, freedom of speech, is to me the ultimate example. Being on the wrong side isn’t enough for liberalism. In this case they actually, boldly, side with the enemy and seek to silence some of what makes us great. To me it’s quite phenominal if people cant see this.

Why must we respect their belief that burning a koran equates murder, even to people ignorant of the act that pissed them off in the first place, but they do not have to consider the importance of our belief in freedom of speech? It’s actually impossible to defend as far as i’m concerned. It’s just liberals showing themselves once again for the anti American scumbags that they are. Again, they’re on the wrong side, theres really nothing else to it.

Oh for goodness sake, like these muslim really needed any reason to murder people in the name of Allah? please! The fact they are using a pastor in Florida (like any of these afghans even know where that is) as the excuse is pathetic- they just needed a good old fashion murder/hate America PR stunt and burning our president in effigy and our flag is certainly nothing new. The murders of the UN staff however, should have the full force of UN retaliation, so if we can just bomb this Afghan village to kingdom come that should send a nice message.

meh in general I’m against burning books. Doesn’t justify the islamists reaction though. I would say though, their religion is about hundreds of years behind most major faiths, about six hundred years behind chrisitianity. Not gonna get into it but the whole medieval period was fraught with christian abuses. I would say they need to time to develop their society beyond mindless religious extremism and start ignoring parts of their own book like good christians do. Also graham is a moron and LOL at the people calling him a Rino, just proves there really isn’t any diversity of thought within the conservative movement.

    Compare it to Deuteronomy and Joshua, where god commanded the Israelites to annihilate;

For this century, try the Belgians in the Congo, the Ustas’a in Croatia, the Serbian Orthodox in Bosnia-Herzegovina, or the Brits in South Africa against the Afrikaaners or the Bengali in what is now Bangladesh.

Why do you hate the Jews, Joe?

Like our Founding Fathers, I’m a Deist/Gaian, so I think that the End Times prophesized in both the Bible. and the Koran, are fictional constructs. However, there is such a thing as self-fulfilling prophesy. The coming continuation of the “Crusades” between the Christian faith, and the Islamic faith, is on the horizon, and it is unavoidable.

I hate to be the secular prophet of doom, here, but the Christians will be unable to convert the Muslim world to Christianity, and the Muslims will be unable to convert the Christian world to Islam. The world’s fate has long been guaranteed by the different interpretations of these two overlapping mythologies. The decision that my wife and I made many decades ago, not to have children, in anticipation of this self-fulfilling apocalyptic scenario, is looking more and more wise everyday.

  • Cory Rodriguez

Excusing the burning of the Koran as Free Speech not only puts our troops in danger it puts all of the United States of America in danger. Being that we are in engaged in more than one war the leader of this so called church and it’s members should be charged with treason.

There are times that I want to burn the bible just because of behaviors that this man and many like him have engaged in. But I don’t, who knows what will come of it if I do. Those right winged extremtists just might hang me if I do, being that I too am a person of color.

Indeed. The last thing this country needs is more raw foodists who think George Washington was a Gaia-worshiper. I thank you for your service, such as it is.

Writing a book, burning a book, drawing a cartoon….it doesn’t take a whole lot to set them off.

Actually, in Washington’s case, I think he was more Deist than Gaian. He definitely believed in some sort of Divine Providence, but again, that only makes him a Deist. He was a Masonic Grand Master, and he signed the Declaration of Independence that praised “nature’s god”, and the “laws of nature”, for crying out loud. Those are not references to the Judeo-Christian “God”, no matter how badly Conservative/Christian America would like to pretend that they are.

For crying out loud, he also said:

“My ears hear with pleasure the other matters you mention. Congress will be glad to hear them too. You do well to wish to learn our arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ. These will make you a greater and happier people than you are. Congress will do every thing they can to assist you in this wise intention; and to tie the knot of friendship and union so fast, that nothing shall ever be able to loose it.”

It is equal parts hilarious and dismaying what an absolute disregard for history you and your ilk display on a regular basis. It’s akin to watching Bill Maher claim that Obama is lying about his religion out of his desire for Obama to be a cool secular humanist like himself.

Well, as we all know, politicians would never pretend to be something they’re not, just to sway a voting block.

Washington, his entire life, refused to take communion. He did, indeed, go to church. But, I’ll bet it was only Martha’s having death grip on one of his ears, and a hickory stick firing on his rear end, that got him there.

Do you really want to go the “quote the Founders on Christianity” route, BadGenome? Because, that’s probably one of the few quotes, from a “primary” founder, that you’ve got available. I’ve got dozens from Paine, Adams, Franklin, Jefferson, and Madison (The Main Dudes). Say the word, and I’ll start posting them.

    Here’s a sampler:

“I almost shudder at the thought of alluding to the most fatal example of the abuses of grief which the history of mankind has preserved – the Cross. Consider what calamities that engine of grief has produced!” – John Adams

That’s hardly a slam against Christianity as a whole. The founders were famously skeptical of organized religion, and one can certainly criticize aspects of a religion – such as idolatry of the cross – while still being an adherent of said religion. The church I attended as a kid was adamant against the practice of using the cross as a symbol, for instance, but it was wholly and unapologetically Christian.

As usual, you are grasping at straws. If you really want to impress me, lay off the quotes that are merely critical of Christianity and start providing some that show the founding fathers engaging in Gaia worship. And please, no more of this “Divine Providence = GAIA!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS SO OBVIAUS!!!!!1!!” silliness.

The Pastor Terry Jones and those who supported him should be locked in the church and burned to death along with all their “Christian Bible.” The words “Christian” and “Bible” really don’t belong together, I have never found a “Christian” who followed the words of Christ.

You’re assuming that I used “Gaia” in the mythological sense. Nope. I was using it because it is commonly used to describe the god of Pantheism. I could have used “Mother Earth” just as easily.

And, I never equated Gaia to Divine Providence. I equated the Deism half of that descripter, “Deism/Gaia”, that you keep leaving off (intentionally), with Divine Providence.

Tell me something BadGenome. Why do you think that all those brilliant Founding Fathers agreed to sign a document that gave homage to the “laws of nature” and “nature’s god”? Odd, isn’t it, that they chose to use the words that the Deists of the Enlightenment era were using to describe their version of God?

If they had wanted to frame and develop a “Christian” nation, why didn’t they insist that the Declaration read the “Laws of Moses” and the Bible’s God”? It would have been that simple. And, had they really wanted to seal the deal, towards a Christian nation, they could have thrown the “Laws of Moses” and the Bible’s God” into the Constitution. They didn’t, because that’s exactly what they wanted to avoid – a Union, with a “favored” religion.

Again, there won’t be any more “Divine Providence = the Gaia Myth” because it was never implied (intentionally) in the first place. Think “pantheism” and we’ll be on the same page. Limbaugh always uses the Gaia term when referring to environmentalism/pantheism. He’s got me using it in place of Pantheism now. Well, we can’t have that. I’ll use Deist/Pantheist when describing the Founders from now on, I’ve learned my lesson in using more precise terminology. Thanks.

So all their references to Jesus and the Gospels were just fodder for the stupid masses, and every time they referenced Nature’s God it was their real colors shining through? As I said before, this is precisely what Maher says about Obama. It boils down to nothing more than, “I LIKE THEM AND I WANT THEM TO BE LIKE ME.”

I am sorry your entire life revolves around Rush Limbaugh and what he says and does because he referenced your little food blog that one time. I do find it wildly hilarious that your very language is being influenced by a guy you so despise, though.

Mr. Limbaugh has never mentioned the site. He just said something that let us know that he was reading our blog. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that he’s watching this thread right now. Either that, or he’s reading printouts that somebody else is handing him.

If I’m obsessed with anythting BG, it’s my career. This blogging stuff is just a little sideline distraction. I’d love to stay and chat with you about the Founders’ Deism, but there’s a new article on Mediaite, about Mr. Limbaugh, that requires my attention. I’m sure you’ll find your way, if you already haven’t.

This christian muslim controversy is a bunch of hog wash. They are all a bunch of fools looking for an excuse to kill each other. My god is better than your god and I’ll kill you if you don’t worship my god, this is insanity at it’s worst. This fight over religion must really piss god off. He is probably sorry he ever created humans after seeing how they carry on using his name to kill other humans. God created humans and humans are killing gods creations, I don’t think he is pleased with that.
