Sen. Schumer: GOP Threat To Shut Down Government Is “Playing With Fire”

Video

Senator Chuck Schumer appeared on CNN‘s State of the Union to sound some alarm bells and warn Republicans that their threats regarding a government shutdown are similar to “playing with fire.” Furthermore, he even suggested a depression would be possible if the Republicans were not willing to compromise.

Schumer argued that a shutdown “was a mistake when Newt Gingrich tried it in 1995. It’ll be a bigger mistake now.” He seemed most concerned with the fact that a shutdown or a failure to raise the debt ceiling could risk the credit markets losing confidence in the U.S. treasury, which could “create a deeper recession than we had over the last several years – god forbid, even a depression”

Also in a bit of an awkward moment, Schumer referred to the “three branches of government” as the House, the Senate and the President, and despite some feelings being hurt with the Supreme Court, such little verbal mistakes should not ruffle too many feathers. In the end Schumer reiterated his plea to Republicans over and over again, “I would urge my Republican colleagues that no matter how strongly they feel, it is playing with fire to risk the shutting down of the government just as it is playing with fire to not raise the debt ceiling.”

We are “playing with Fire” and you libs burnt down the forrest!

Conservatives will stop you libs….you sure could not do it on your own.

General Rule of Thumb…..Whatever Schumer says do the opposite for the good of the country.

“Also in a bit of an awkward moment, Schumer referred to the “three branches of government” as the House, the Senate and the President, and despite some feelings being hurt with the Supreme Court, such little verbal mistakes should not ruffle too many feathers.”

Imagine Palin doing that, do you think for a minute that it would be shrugged off as a “little verbal mistake”?

Just imagining if Palin or Bachmann had said this. Admit it Matty, that would’ve been the headline.

  • Mr.Papshmer

    Also…

Re: “three branches of government”. Think about it for a minute. You don’t say stuff like that unless that’s what you thought. It wasn’t a “mistake”, that dumbass actually thought that. Liberal retard…

  • Pablo

Ah, another “Economic 9/11″, Chucky? Always with the fear mongering.

Also in a bit of an awkward moment, Schumer referred to the “three branches of government” as the House, the Senate and the President, and despite some feelings being hurt with the Supreme Court, such little verbal mistakes should not ruffle too many feathers.

But if Sarah Palin said it, we’d have 37 threads up before the topic was put on hiatus, only to be brought up again on every future “Sarah Palin is an idiot” threads. Well, guess what? Chuck Schumer is an idiot.

  • Pablo

Heh. I think we have a consensus.

In a related story, Chris Matthews referred to Egypt having control of the Panama Canal. Another genius.

  • Liberal Tormentor (formerly Seeing 2012 From My Window)

Yeah, I saw that musiccityvic. And you know someone was in his ear telling him what an idiot he is because he corrected himself. Yet still nothing on Mediaite about that. And I’m still waiting for them to do a piece on Obama confusing Iraq and Afghanistan. Come on guys, just looking for some consistency. You parse EVERY word uttered by Palin and Bachmann and give passes to liberal gaffes. If you want credibility, you can’t do that.

Schumer is like Krugman with a record of being proven wrong at almost the 100% point. At least Krugman sticks to his anti-American Socialist dogma with predictable consistency. Schumer only takes a stand after wetting his finger and sticking it in the wind.

My comment that “such little verbal mistakes should not ruffle too many feathers” was a prediction of the response to Schumer saying this, not a determination by me whether feathers should be ruffled. I’m in agreement if Palin or Bachmann said it, there would be a huge response, however, I think everyone occasionally makes a stupid error like this and to make a headline or a gotcha-story solely about one stupid verbal gaffe is uninteresting?

Matt, would you have included it in the headline if it had been Palin or Bachmann? I’m just looking for a yes or no here.

So King, no comment on Chucky huh? Why am I not surprised?

  • The Real Royal King

Michelle-in-Utah’s patented silly diversions notwithstanding, this may be one of the more significant cable news pieces for years.

In 1936, the Republicans forced a retreat from the New Deal, and the economy began tanking, again.

In the 1990′s, the Japanse instituted an austerity program, and the economy tanked and stagnated for most of a decade.

In 2010, Britain’s new Conservative gouvernment instituted an austerity program, and Britain has now had three quarters of GNP decline, whilst the US stimulus programs resulted in more than three quarters of GNP growth.

In 2011, do we listen to the demonstrably failed policies above hoisted on us by the Republicans and the Tea Partiers? In other words, do we take the Economic Decline Jalopy of W which stalled on the precipice and give it the final push?

Give him a bit of time, and if you still have no answer, then resume your bleating, kvetching, moaning and whining.

Rocksteady is by far the stupidest person to regularly comment here. Stupidity such as that displayed by that moron can only be achieved by being born feet first with a cord all wrapped around his head, thus depriving his brain of oxygen for the first several minutes of his life. Combine that with his having an extra chromosome, a blank look in his eyes that says, “no one’s home”, and the constant stream of saliva exiting the corner of his mouth, and you have a typical liberal progressive. His own mother thinks he’s a retard, and coming from a chick who has a mattress welded to her back and a crack habit, that’s saying something.

NO RAISING THE DEBT LIMIT. Have the US go bankrupt if need be. Let the welfare queens and unemployed and illegal aliens and goverment retirees have to wait in line at the bankruptcy court to get 10 cents on the dollar. We need to shake this govenment to the bones, and I can’t think of nothing better, Boener is a sell out…there is no reform…just more tax and spend. I would not be suprised to see an uprising with volence. They were warned and DID NOT LISTEN TO US.

I was responding to YOUR comments specifically, not Schumer’s. Read your own darn post that I responded to. You never mentioned the word “elected” in it, but you are wrong anyway. There are elected GOP members who have either endorsed or promoted shutting down the federal govt to pursue their agenda. Hmmm…DeMint never endorsed a government shutdown if it were to be called for? Why did the rightwinger Mattera think otherwise in that Human Events article I just linked to above? How about DeMint’s own nuanced statement on the issue here? He never said NO.
    http://nationaljournal.com/member/politics/demint-i-think-i-ve-found-my-role–20101103?page=1

How about the one you clearly skipped? US Senator Mike Lee of Utah…right here.

How about congressman Tim Walberg (R-MI)? How about Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA)? Do those sound like elected members of congress to you Blower? They have endorsed you such a stupid idea. I would also link you to their statements but my post will be moderated. Now, can you admit your deception Marceaux?

    Cheers.

If the media’s going to ‘gotcha’ republican gaffes, they’d better do it to the democrats as well. Obviously, it doesn’t happen. This is very funny stuff, you know of the ‘smarter than a fifth graders stuff. Three branches, forgets the judiciary. Yet, no one cares. Blood libel is used, and it’s non-stop coverage.

Conservative media should stop complaining about it though. If it wasn’t for the obvious bias, people wouldn’t go to the ‘big sites’, drudgereport, theblaze etc and FNC. Breitbart, Beck, etc wouldn’t be so busy home counting their money. It all works out in the end…

While I normally agree, and definitely know that its just a silly gaffe. But it should have been in the headline, because seriously, that’s a funny mistake to forget the judiciary as a branch of government, something that’s so fundamental. But, as long as your consistent, your point is surely valid.
