SNL Parodies Christine O’Donnell’s “I’m Not A Witch” Ad

video

The prospect of a candidate for political office designing an entire campaign ad around the fact that they’re not a witch was clearly too much for Saturday Night Live to resist…so they didn’t. Midway through tonight’s show, they broke out their version of Christine O’Donnell’s much-talked-about commercial, with Kristen Wiig playing O’Donnell…and, of course, a ton of witch jokes.

There were witch references ranging from the more subtle (“That’s the kind of candidate Delaware hasn’t had since 1692″), to the not-so-subtle (revealing the piano backing music was being played by a skeleton). They also had their fun at the expense of O’Donnell’s “I’m you” line – echoing this tweet, SNL expanded that to, “Just like you, I have to constantly deny that I’m a witch.”

This was one of the better moments of the show tonight, and the increasingly outlandish witch-denials brought into focus just how weird the actual race has gotten. Video of the fake ad below.

Kristen Wiig is by far the best current SNL cast member.

They all had the SNL segement of Rham Emmanuell and the guy that’s taking over his job earlier in the week. So what’s you point?

Well, I’ve not been able to reconcile the thirst the Media (MSM,cable,SNL,radio, blogs etc.) has with O’Donnell. Here’s a candidate that did win a surprise primary but even both major paries predicted not a chance she would win the general in DE. One party said thank you now we will will DE because of her primary win and the other had a so-called civil war stating not to vote for her in the primary.

Polls have indicated thus far the general will not even be close yet the media is using so much time, energy and resource towards O’Donnell (after her win and the thank you(s) and civil war):

O’Donnell Took Up Third Of News Coverage

Biggest Story Of 2010 So Far but…

    Mediaite O’Donnell Tags

I can theorize that maybe the GOP planted O’Donnell to distract the media and draw in their predicted attention, time and resources to draw away from other races or that media looking only for the buck. I guess either works to some degree. Maybe it’s both.

Hard to theorize totally based on ideology and the Media would fixate on O’Donnell for this long, this much when all indications (to date) she not even close to winning Senate seat in DE.

Clicks or plant? I guess it would be for solidifying media’s bonafides with their viewers/readers. But even that’s not really ideology but more aligned towards clicks and the $$$

If SNL didn’t make fun of a candidate whose main talking point of her political ad is “I’m not a witch” they wouldn’t be doing their job, pure and simple.

Agreed regarding SNL. But I would carry that same logic forwad towards a congressional candidate that had Christmas party pics sucking on a sex toy.

Krystal Ball, candidate for Congress in Virginia. Krystal Ball and sex toy would seem to be in the sweet spot for an SNL skit. Unless SNL is anti sex toy.

  • Big_F-ing_Deal

Well, they REALLY tore Gloria Allred a new asshole tonight, so there you go.

Called her a disgusting and vile human being who deserves her own layer of hell. lol

  • RazorsEdge

To piggyback on BFD’s comment, here’s the vid on Allred’s own “layer of Hell” (funnier than just reading the transcript) Hope you don’t mind BFD.

I find it notable (but not surprising) that Mediaite would hi-light the Christine O’Donnell skit from last night’s SNL. The Gloria Allred skit was much, much funnier and absolutely devastating because EVRY SINGLE WORD of it was absolutely true, but said under the guise of humor. This skit, by contrast, is just absurd and over the top and, therefore, not funny.

  • omega919

Seriously, what is wrong with some of you? If you can’t see that a political ad, with someone (Republican or Democrat) declaring they’re not a witch, is ripe for SNL, then you’ve ceased being human.

Are you seriously so hyper partisan that you’ve shed any and all sense of humor?

The Jerry Brown campaign’s “whore” comment wasn’t the first to slur against a Republican woman. And look where the attacks are coming from—progressives and liberal women….

Kristal Ball is not expected to win or even come close, and The House has already been given up as a lost cause for the Democrats. SNL’s duty now, as good progressives, is to campaign for The Senate, which is very much in play.

They think everything that makes liberals look bad is hilarious, and everything that makes conservatives look bad is a lie and unfair and proof that liberalism is an unstoppable, all-powerful force for evil and satanic worship. Over in the Coulter/Huckabee thread, calling all liberals atheists and fake Christians goes unnoticed. But if anyone had said that about “all conservatives,” the hysterical righties would be typing their fingers bloody trying to express their rage and hatred as quickly and furiously as possible. There aren’t enough exclamation points, there is no CAPS LOCK BIG ENOUGH to contain the rage, the hatred, and the frustration of the ultra-right wing conservative. Their lust for power and prestige know no limits, no propriety, no sense of fair play. Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. They will call you names for laughing when they don’t, and not laughing when they do. It’s all they know. All they are. And all they’ll ever be.

Paul, you tell me. I believe in much smaller government, much less government spending, much lower taxation, in a Constitution that doesn’t change to fit a citizen’s beliefs, in following that Constitution, and that federal government should interfere less with state government. Is that “ultra right-wing” to you? It seems mainstream and what our founding fathers intended to me.

I have an idea for a new O’Donnell ad:
“There’s a lot of misinformation going around about me. I actually DO touch myself. I’m just like you.”

  • dahni

O’Donnell is certainly a different candidate that a lot of those up for election/re-election. Maybe strange in ways…While I enjoyed the SNL show (and most of them) I will still support O’Donnell because she is more likely to endorse changes in DC that I also endorse. If not, I’ll work to vote her out next election. But, it’ll be my decision based on the situation, not the laughs I get from SNL.

  • http://sharethisurlaboutglennbeck.com/ GlennBeckReview

In practical terms, that means that you want gridlock in DC. Very little will get done if the R’s take power. Luckily, this extremist, far, far, far right wing, religious extremist is way behind in the polls.

Of course, the plutocrats are pouring money into her campaign, so that could change. To be clear, here, Dahni, supporting any Tea Party candidate is supporting plutocracy.

So, O’Donnell is a witch. That’s old news. The Tea Party has a candidate that does Nazi SS reanactments. He insists he is not a racist.

PH, how small? Small enough to drown in a bathtub, a la Grover Norquist? If so, then yes, that’s ultra-right wing. Less spending on what? The military? Homeland security? Private contractors? Or is your idea of less spending to slash medicare, medicaid, social security, and all other safety nets? If so, then yes, ultra-right wing. Much lower taxation for whom? Everyone? Just the wealthy? Perhaps a flat tax? If you believe a flat tax is the best tax structure, or if you believe in eliminating income tax and replacing it with a consumption tax, then yes, ultra-right wing.

As for the constitution, that’s what we have courts for, and in the past couple decades, SCOTUS has been as far right as possible, including violating basic tenets of constitutionality to hammer their round pegs into square holes: Bush v Gore; CU v FEC, and more.

And as for staying out of State business, where do you stand on Bush v Gore? If you think that was the correct decision, then you’re not a true believer in states’ rights. Look at Vincent Bugliosi’s book on the subject. It’s detailed, constitutionally grounded, and a clear and sharp indictment of the Bush v Gore decision. You don’t have to like Vincent to see that he makes sense in all of his arguments – and SCOTUS does not.

You know we’ve been down similar roads like this before, you and I, and that we both really do have the good of the nation at heart, which is why I always give you full and detailed responses. I don’t want to lump you in with the firebombers here but sometimes shorthand and speed get the better of me. I’m ready and willing to engage reasonably on these issues, and if you’d prefer to leave all the labels at the door, I’m game. ;-)

Patrick Henry said: “I believe in much smaller government, much less government spending, much lower taxation,…”

Patrick, taxes are at a 50 year low! If you examine the marginal tax rates when the U.S. had a growing middle class, you’ll find that we’re actually under-taxed. By “we” I mean the rich. In the 50′s and 60′s, the marginal taxes were double their current levels, and we had a growing middle class.

Since Reagan and accelerated with the Bush tax cuts set to expire this year, the middle class has been shrinking at an alarming rate. We need less government spending and more government spending. The debate should be about effective vs. incompetent government, not the reactionary framing of big (20th Century) vs. small (18th Century) government. Government is the ONLY institution that can protect the government from enemies AND corporations that put profit before people. Effective government protects the citizens’ military and social security. With corporations outsourcing American jobs, they certainly aren’t protecting our social security (meant in the broad sense).
